Different Hormone Therapy Formulations may Pose Different Risks for Heart Attack and Stroke
Posted: Published on September 18th, 2013
Newswise LOS ANGELES (EMBARGOED until 9 a.m. EDT/6 a.m. PDT on Sept. 18, 2013) Post-menopausal women whose doctors prescribe hormone replacement therapy for severe hot flashes and other menopause symptoms may want to consider taking low doses of Food and Drug Administration-approved bioidentical forms of estrogen or getting their hormones via a transdermal patch. A new observational study shows bioidentical hormones in transdermal patches may be associated with a lower risk of heart attack and FDA-approved products -- not compounded hormones -- may be associated with a slightly lower risk of stroke compared to synthetic hormones in pill form. If confirmed by future randomized trials, these findings may be significant because for the past decade, many women who experienced severe menopause symptoms opted not to use hormone therapy because of the reported increased risk of stroke and heart attacks, said Chrisandra Shufelt, MD, director of the Womens Hormone and Menopause Program at the Barbra Streisand Womens Heart Center in the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. Shufelt said the studys findings are not conclusive and are based on observational follow-up, not a randomized clinical trial. Additionally, all types of hormone therapy had similar rates of total cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality, the study … Continue reading

Concussions' Lingering Effects Linked to Hormone Deficiency
Posted: Published on September 16th, 2013
See Inside The finding may explain why even seemingly mild concussions can give rise to persistent maladies By Stephani Sutherland When a blast rattles the brain, the resulting concussion sometimes leads to unremitting psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, irritability, sleep disorders, pain, and learning and memory problems. Tens of thousands of American veterans are estimated to suffer from this postconcussive syndrome (PCS), formerly associated with shell shock. Now evidence suggests that a hormone imbalance may underlie the chronic symptomsmeaning hormone replacement therapy could spur a dramatic recovery. At least since World War I, scientists have tried to figure out why about 10 percent of adults' concussionsfrom any cause, including accidents, falls and sports injurieslead to persistent psychological and physical complaints. Endocrinologist Charles Wilkinson of the VA Puget Sound and the University of Washington and his colleagues were intrigued by studies that found pituary hormone deficiencies, which affect only 1 percent of the general population, in many people who had had a concussion. No one had investigated whether a blast concussion could disrupt hormones as well, so Wilkinson's team tested 35 soldiers who had been near a bomb explosion. They found that a whopping half of the soldiers had undergone … Continue reading

People's Pharmacy: There are alternatives to estrogen therapy
Posted: Published on September 15th, 2013
Q: Why are doctors so determined that menopausal patients should take estrogen? When I told my doctor that I am reluctant to take Premarin for fear of cancer, she actually said that cancer is no big deal. It is just a way of life now: Get cancer, get treatment and get over it, is pretty much what she said. I was appalled and have found a new doctor. A: We share your indignation. Cancer is a big deal, even when treated successfully. The controversy over hormone replacement therapy (Premarin, Prempro, Estrace and others) has raged for decades. The Food and Drug Administration requires warnings about both breast and uterine cancer in the official prescribing information. A combination of black cohosh and St. John's wort might ease menopausal symptoms. One study found that French maritime pine bark extract (Pycnogenol) also may be helpful (Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, August 2007; Panminerva Medica, September 2011, Suppl. 1). Q: A friend and I were both recently diagnosed with perleche or angular cheilitis. Although the prescribed medicine (ciclopirox and fluticasone creams) clears it up, the irritation comes right back. I have very dry lips, and use lanolin to moisturize them. Could this exacerbate the … Continue reading

'Male menopause' may stem from low estrogen
Posted: Published on September 14th, 2013
TV ads tout testosterone treatments for "low T," but surprising new research shows a different hormone may play a role in less sex drive and more fat as men age. Estrogen the female hormone is needed by men, too, and the study gives the first clear evidence that too little of it can cause certain "male menopause" symptoms. "A lot of things we think are due to testosterone deficiency are actually related to the estrogen deficiency that accompanies it," said Dr. Joel Finkelstein of Massachusetts General Hospital. He led the U.S.-government funded study, which appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. Testosterone is the main male sex hormone. Men's bodies convert some of it into estrogen, and levels of both decline with age. Until now, there was no way to tell which hormone was responsible for complaints of diminished libido, strength and energy. Millions of men have been prescribed testosterone gel, patches or shots for these problems, but it's not known how much they need or whether this hormone replacement therapy is good, bad or neutral, Finkelstein said. Doctors don't usually prescribe estrogen to men; the way to remedy low estrogen is to give them testosterone and let the … Continue reading

Estrogen-Only Hormone Replacement Therapy Could Lower Pancreatic Cancer Risk
Posted: Published on September 14th, 2013
By Rachael Rettner, Senior Writer Published: 09/13/2013 10:06 AM EDT on LiveScience One type of hormone replacement therapy for postmenopausal women may decrease the risk of pancreatic cancer, a new study suggests. In the study, women from California who took estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy for symptoms of menopause were 41 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer over a 14-year period than women who never took hormone replacement therapy. Estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy (HRT) contains the female hormone estrogen by itself, as opposed to in combination with other hormones, such as progestin. Because estrogen by itself may increase the risk of uterine cancer, estrogen-only HRT is generally prescribed only to women who've had their uterus removed (a hysterectomy). However, in contrast to the results with estrogen-only HRT, the study also found another type of estrogen-containing medication -- birth control pills -- were linked with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer when used over the long term. [7 Surprising Facts about The Pill] Women who took oral contraception for 10 years or more had a 72 percent greater risk of developing pancreatic cancer than those who had never used oral contraception. The study found associations, and cannot prove that estrogen -- … Continue reading
