Judge Freezes Personal Assets of HRC Medical Owners' Wives

Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2013

By Jennifer Kraus Consumer Investigator NASHVILLE, Tenn. - There's a new development in the state Attorney General's case against HRC Medical, the former hormone replacement company based here in Nashville. A judge has now agreed with prosecutors that the wives of the men running HRC were in on the efforts to divert more than a million dollars from the company. For years, Dr. Dan Hale was the face of HRC Medical, the one who publicly touted the benefits of his company's hormone replacement therapy while his brother Don Hale worked behind the scenes running the business end of things. Now both men's wives find themselves embroiled in the state of Tennessee's lawsuit against HRC. A judge has ordered that both Bonnie and Dixie Hale's assets be frozen. Last fall, the Attorney General sued HRC alleging the company had put thousands of patients' lives in danger by failing to warn them about the risks and side effects of their so-called bio-identical hormone therapy. A Davidson County judge previously ruled there was evidence that Dan and Don Hale had been fraudulently diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the company to their own personal accounts after learning of the state's investigation and … Continue reading

What did they decide, and why are women still baffled? Menopausal hormone therapy, also called hormone replacement therapy, is a treatment for women in the throes of menopause, the inevitable period of life when estrogen naturally declines. Taking estrogen or a combination of estrogen and another hormone, progestin, the synthetic form of progesterone, can alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia and vaginal dryness, Hormone therapy has been under intense scrutiny since 2002, when a large study called the Women's Health Initiative reported that taking additional hormones specifically the combination of estrogen and progestin increased the risk of blood clots, stroke, breast cancer, heart attacks and gall bladder disease for some women. For a woman with a uterus, estrogen treatment alone raises her chance of getting endometrial cancer. The researchers abruptly halted the study, concluding that risks outweighed benefits. Almost overnight, millions of women abandoned hormone therapy. Since then, however, we've learned that hormone therapy What's … Continue reading

Grohol, Psy.D. on August 17, 2013 A new study has found that hypnotic relaxation therapy can improve sexual health in postmenopausal women who have moderate to severe hot flashes. The Baylor University study, presented at the American Psychological Associations recent annual meeting, is the first step toward an alternative to hormone replacement therapy, according to Gary Elkins, Ph.D., professor of psychology and neuroscience. For many women, hormone replacement therapy is not an option for menopause-related symptoms due to increased risks of cancer and heart disease, he noted. For the study, 187 women were randomly assigned to receive either five weekly sessions of hypnotic relaxation therapy or supportive counseling. The study sessions were led by researchers at Baylors Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory. All of the researchers had been trained in clinical hypnosis. The women in the hypnotic relaxation therapy group received a hypnotic induction followed by suggestions for relaxation, coolness and mental imagery. The other women discussed their symptoms with a trained therapist but did not receive any hypnosis. Women completed questionnaires at the beginning of the study, at … Continue reading
