NPS Pharma Buys Back Worldwide Rights To Short Bowel Syndrome Drug

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

BEDMINSTER, NJ (TheStreet) -- NPS Pharmaceuticals (NPSP) has reacquired worldwide marketing rights to two approved drugs, most notably its short bowel syndrome therapy Revestive, from Takeda. Under terms of the re-worked deal, Takeda will receive $50 million in NPS Pharma stock in exchange for relinquishing ex-North America commercial rights to Revestive and Preotact, a thyroid hormone replacement therapy. NPS partnered with Nycomed for Preotact in 2004 and Revestive in 2007, and then Takeda acquired Nycomed in 2011. The drugs were sold back to NPS Pharma because they are no longer "strategic" to the company, according to spokesman Tobias Cottman. European regulators approved Revestive last August but Takeda had not yet launched the drug. That responsibility will now fall to NPS Pharma, which needs to build out a commercial operation in Europe while also remaining focused on selling the drug in the U.S., where it's known as Gattex. Hormone replacement pills in menopause risky to gallbladder

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

The risks of taking hormone replacement therapy pills for menopausal women include gallbladder surgery, a large French study suggests. Gallstone disease is common in developed countries and its complications are a major reason for hospital admissions. Among women, those over the age of 50 are at greatest risk of gallstone disease. Researchers in France analyzed data on 70,928 menopausal women who were asked about their use of estrogen hormone therapy every two years between 1992 and 2008. They were checking for an increased risk of gallbladder surgery, also called cholecystectomy and for complications of gallstones. "Over five years, about one cholecystectomy in excess would be expected in every 150 women using oral estrogen therapy without a progestagen, compared with women not exposed to menopausal hormone therapy," Dr. Antoine Racine of South Paris University and his co-authors said in Monday's issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal. "Complicated gallstone disease should be added to the list of potential adverse events to be considered when balancing the benefits and risks associated with menopausal hormone therapy." In France, hormone therapy is usually given in patch or gel form on the skin rather than orally as is common in North America, the United Kingdom … Continue reading

Hormone replacement therapy safe, doctors say

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2013

Dubai: Treating symptoms of menopause through hormone replacement therapy (HRT) considered risky by earlier studies is safe to use to some extent, doctors on Saturday said at a Womens Health seminar at the Al Bustan Rotana Hotel. The seminar, organised by the Ministry of Health, is part of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme for healthcare providers in the country. A study conducted by Womens Health Institute ten years ago found that menopausal women taking HRT developed an increased risk of breast cancer, stroke, heart disease, blood clots and dementia in women aged 65 and above. This gave HRT a bad impression making doctors avoid giving this as an option for treating symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes, night sweats, depression, and sexual dysfunction, among others. I call it a biased study. To me, Im a great advocate of HRT and I think women have to have a good quality of life and that you can give it if there are no absolute contraindications like if she didnt have breast cancer or family member that has breast cancer, or endometrial cancer, or there is no history of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), Dr Kauser Perveen Mansour, Senior Consultant Obstetrician & … Continue reading

Doubt over breast cancer fall link

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

Doubt has been cast on research that suggests a decline in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use is linked to a fall in the number of new breast cancer cases. Use of the drugs dropped rapidly after a series of studies claimed using HRT increases the risk of breast cancer. Researchers subsequently suggested that the drop-off in HRT use was directly linked to a decline in breast cancer rates. But experts writing in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care said there is "no clear evidence" of a link. However, the authors said that statistics and time trends "neither back up nor refute the claim". The link between HRT and the disease has proved controversial, with several studies suggesting the finding has been blown out of proportion. But other research has reinforced the association, including two studies in 2006 and 2007. One claimed that between 2002 and 2003 - following the publication of the reports which first raised concerns about the drug and subsequently the decline in use - the numbers of new breast cancer cases fell by 6.7%. The second study showed that the rates of single and combined HRT fell by 58% and 38% respectively between 2001 … Continue reading

The HRT Controversy Redux

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

A 2002 study linking hormone replacement therapy to the risk of breast cancer scared scores of menopausal women away from HRT. Now new research, published in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care, reports that "there is no clear evidence that the decline in the use of hormone replacement therapy is linked to a reported fall in the numbers of new cases of breast cancer, as has been claimed," according to a release from the publisher. "Based on the observed trends in the incidence of breast cancer following the decline in HRT use, the ecological evidence is too limited either to support or refute the possibility that HRT causes breast cancer," the authors wrote in the last of a series of five critiques of the published data in three major studies on HRT. In related news, a consensus statement issued by seven major professional societies and published on line in the journals Climacteric and Maturitas stated that hormone replacement therapy is the most effective available treatment for menopause symptoms. An article about the statement in Medpage Today reports that the risk-benefit balance for HRT "tends to be greatest in women younger than 60 or within 10 years after menopause … Continue reading

Doctors Clear Up Confusion Over Hormone Therapy

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013

The safety of taking hormones to treat the symptoms of menopause has been questioned in recent years, but a new consensus statement from several doctors' groups aims to resolve confusion over how the treatment should be used. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment for the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes and sleep problems, but the therapy comes with risks, so it should be used on a case-by-case basis, the statement said. About a decade ago, a large study found that HRT that included estrogen and progestin increased the risk of breast cancer by about 25 percent in postmenopausal women. The finding was so dramatic that researchers stopped the study early and physicians changed how they prescribed HRT. The new statement says that while the therapy comes with risks, its benefits generally outweigh the harm for women under age 60, or those who've been in menopause for fewer than 10 years. The increased risk of breast cancer also appears to disappear a few years after treatment is stopped, the statement says.
