Hormone replacement to prevent aging: does it work?
Posted: Published on August 11th, 2012
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A brighter, happier mind. Increased strength, stamina and energy. Regain the wonderful qualities of youth. All this and much more, advocates say, can be achieved with hormone replacement therapy. 53-year-old Henry Robbins is one of the true believers. "I just couldn't sleep," he said. "I had joint pain and aches. I had an ED problem. And then once I got on the therapy, probably within three months all those went away." Robbins works for HRC Medical in West Columbia. The company offers therapy for men and women using so-called "bio-identical" hormones derived from natural sources. Specifically, wild yam plants. Those substitutes for estrogen, testosterone and progesterone are formed into pellets and implanted under a patient's skin. HRCclaims the resultsare profound. Dr. Connie Casebolt is the West Columbia clinic's medical director. "We've had people feel it the next day," said Casebolt. "Typically, though, we tell people to expect something like a one to three week time frame before they really start to feel it." Games offer unique platform for education, social change
Posted: Published on August 10th, 2012
Games for Change promotes games in India and other countries that teach women everything from pregnancy do's and don'ts to how to make important family decisions. Photo Courtesy of Emily Treat SALT LAKE CITY Whether taking on the role of a Darfurian refugee or experiencing the frustrations of hormone replacement therapy, mobile video games, typically played on cellphones, are having an increasingly widespread impact across the world. Games that promote social change, such as "9 Minutes" and "Worm Attack," are gaining momentum and support and are continuously being upgraded to reach a worldwide audience that has increasing access to mobile technology. There are 3.5 billion mobile phone users in the world and more than 65 percent of them are in developing countries, according to statistics from Half the Sky, an initiative that implements mobile gaming and is dedicated to helping marginalized women overcome obstacles such as sex trafficking and forced prostitution around the world. These games are part of an innovative effort to reach and educate a widespread audience about political, social, economic and health issues that contribute to global poverty. Many games being developed are targeting residents in countries and areas like India and East Africa to help educate … Continue reading

Research: High Testosterone Increases Prostate Cancer Risk
Posted: Published on August 8th, 2012
NEW YORK, Aug. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --New research finds older men with higher levels of free testosterone have an increased risk of prostate cancer. Australian researchers spent a decade exploring the testosterone-prostate cancer connection by comparing natural testosterone levels of men in their 70s and 80s, those with prostate cancer and without. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120807/NY53583 ) "Men with late-onset prostate cancer had higher levels of testosterone," said Mount Sinai prostate cancer robotic surgeon, Dr. David Samadi. "The increased risk was seen in men with naturally high testosterone levels, as well as those taking testosterone hormone replacement therapy." The knowledge of testosterone's role in prostate cancer is not new. Hormone therapy, or androgen deprivation therapy, is a widely used prostate cancer treatment option designed to slow the growth of the disease by suppressing testosterone. This study was initiated to learn more about how testosterone might trigger the onset of prostate cancer. As part of The Health in Men Study (HIMS), researchers from The University of Western Australia discovered that men diagnosed with late-onset prostate cancer had testosterone levels that were 13 picomoles per liter of blood higher than those who did not develop the disease. An even greater testosterone increase was seen … Continue reading

by ANJANETTE FLOWERS / NewsChannel 36 Staff WCNC.com Posted on August 3, 2012 at 1:19 PM Updated today at 6:35 PM CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Like a lot of people his age, Charles Parker said there came a day when getting out of bed became more and more challenging. Sleeping one to two nights out of two weeks, tired all the time, eating food to give you energy, gaining weight, lethargicI remember thinking Is this it? Is it just going to go downhill from here? At 55 years old, Parker did what a lot of people would do. "I had been to a doctor and they said, after I spent a lot of money, they said You're just old and fat, he said. Thats where Dr. Mickey Barbar, the CEO of Cenegenics Carolinas, came in. "We are a preventative medical practice, said Dr. Barbar. We focus on helping people stay healthy, preventing diseases that we associate with the aging process like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke." Doctors call for hormone replacement therapy rethink
Posted: Published on July 28th, 2012
Doctors and specialists are calling for hormone replacement treatments (HRT) to be more readily available for women who need them. It has been 10 years since an alarming US study found HRT increased a woman's risk of breast cancer, strokes and heart attack. But a decade later, medical professionals agree that those findings were flawed. Doctors say the pharmaceutical industry has withdrawn from sale half of all the available therapies, while extreme product warnings are unnecessarily frightening and outdated. But there is still confusion amongst women and GPs about the best treatment. Gynaecologist Dr John Eden, head of the Sydney Menopause Centre at the Royal Hospital for Women, says the 2002 Women's Health Initiative Study in the US changed the lives of millions of women. "It terrified women, there's no doubt about that, it was laced with fear," he said. "Probably the most dramatic example is that before Women's Health Initiative (WHI) I would hardly ever prescribe an anti-depressant, since WHI I've become an expert in anti-depressants, and that's because I see there's a small group of women, probably around one-in-eight, who have severe, intractable sweats and flushes day and night for the rest of their lives." Margaret Miller is … Continue reading

UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz Sounds off on Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Posted: Published on July 18th, 2012
UFC light heavyweight Tito Ortiz has gone on air to warn of a coming epidemic of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) use. In an interview with HDNets Inside MMA, six-time champion Ortiz said: The sport has come so far in such a short space of time, I hope this hasnt become an epidemic. What type of message are we sending to the youths that are watching our sport? TRT is a treatment for people with abnormally low levels of the male hormone testosterone. It requires regular injections of the steroid. It has been used by an increasing number of fighters in order to gain a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) to allow them to compete while undergoing the treatment. Fighters such as Chael Sonnen, Dan Henderson, Todd Duffee, Nate Marquardt and Frank Mir have all been granted TUEs. This is the same thing that weve been trying to stop from happening, and all of a sudden in the last six months its legal to do, said Ortiz. Youre allowed to be six times over the average? Since day one since Ive been competing over the last 15 years, Ive always been on an even field. Why all of a sudden other fighters … Continue reading

Docs use hormones more often than prescribe them
Posted: Published on July 13th, 2012
Doctors may be more willing to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT), or recommend it to their wives, than to prescribe it to their patients, a study of German gynecologists suggests. Don't miss these Health stories We're about to see a body-language blitz: sweaty palms clasping mouths in disbelief and the sweetest Olympic pose two fists hoisted aloft in displays of golden bliss. Scholars think body language likely began eons ago, before language, so why do we still rely on it? Nearly all were willing to recommend HRT for hot flashes, a typical menopause problem, whether to a partner or a patient. But with other potential uses, there was some disconnect. For example, 59 percent of the doctors said they would take hormones to ward off osteoporosis, or recommend it to their partners. But of that group, only three-quarters had suggested the same thing to at least some patients. That's not surprising, given the issues swirling around HRT, according to Dr. Michele Curtis of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, who was not involved in the study. The survey, which includes responses from more than 2,500 doctors, was done in 2010, eight years after the Women's Health Initiative hit … Continue reading

(PRWEB) July 12, 2012 Aging may very well be one of the most common problems humans are being faced with because after all, nobody can escape the ravages of time. Fortunately though, it seems that solutions are being worked upon with one of the most interesting being hormone replacement therapy(HRT). HRT is a method of treatment which administers a patient with hormones to compensate for a lack of natural hormones, or to substitute for others(source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hormone_replacement_therapy). One of the most established hormone replacement therapy clinics in Las Vegas Nevada, LiveAgelessly by Dr. Maria Keller, was recently featured in Las Vegas The Morning Blend show. Liveagelessly provides details on the therapy itself, the theory behind it, how it works, and what other patients have to say about it. Lots of people are surprised to find out that they have hormonal imbalance for years. The therapy will help people that have these symptoms: Dr. Maria Keller has been a medical practitioner after being trained in Gynecology and Obstetrics in 1997. Lately, she has focused most of her research on hormones, how they function within the body and how they can be exploited to slow down the aging process. LiveAgelessly is the fruit … Continue reading

Medical Groups Back Hormone Therapy
Posted: Published on July 11th, 2012
Although the risks of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women have been debated over the past decade, a coalition of 15 major medical groups have issued a statement saying that it is safe when its taken for a short time to fight symptoms of menopause. In a joint news release, three of the groups the North American Menopause Society, The Endocrine Society and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine said that the associations issued the statement because to reassure women and their providers that hormone therapy is acceptable and relatively safe for healthy, symptomatic, recently postmenopausal women. Over the last 10 years, there has been a complete abandonment of hormone therapy in some settings accompanied by reluctance to treat women who would benefit from relief of their symptoms. As a result, some women have sought unproven alternative therapies. The groups conclusion came in response to what it called the highly controversial Womens Health Initiative, which concluded that HRTs risks outweighed its benefits when taken to avoid chronic diseases. The joint statement issued this week dealt with the benefits of HRT when taken to avoid menopausal symptoms like painful intercourse and dry vagina. The results of the WHI and the conflicting … Continue reading

10 years after hormone therapy study: What doctors know now
Posted: Published on July 10th, 2012
It's been 10 years since researchers of the Women's Health Initiative, a large randomized, controlled trial on hormone therapy sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, announced their first findings: that the health risks outweighed the benefits of estrogen plus progestin hormone therapy (HT) in postmenopausal women. Since then, additional research has advanced the understanding of the benefits and risks. JoAnn Manson, one of the study's lead investigators and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, is the president of the North American Menopause Society. She spoke with USA TODAY's Janice Lloyd about what women need to know to get through the challenging time and to protect their health. Q: Millions of women stopped taking hormone therapy as a result of the study 10 years ago. Was that a good thing? A: Although the pendulum may have swung too far, it was a good thing that many women who were inappropriate candidates for HT stopped taking the medications. For example, it was fortunate that many women at high risk of heart attack, stroke, and breast cancer stopped taking HT. However, even young, newly menopausal, and healthy women with significant hot flashes and other symptoms became afraid to seek treatment. … Continue reading
