Hormones play vital role in skin's health
Posted: Published on May 13th, 2012
wwltv.com Posted on May 11, 2012 at 10:31 PM Updated Saturday, May 12 at 1:41 AM Meg Farris / Eyewitness News Email: mfarris@wwltv.com | Twitter: @megfarriswwl Controversy years ago over hormone replacement therapy after menopause, caused many women to stop taking their hormones. And that's when dermatologist began seeing women's skin become dry, wrinkled and thin, fast. But now the latest studies are changing the minds for doctors about how important "body identical" non-oral hormones are for health and beauty, head to toe, especially with the skin. Celebrity Suzanne Somers, 65, long ago told her fans her secret to anti-aging. "Icall it restoration verses deterioration. Put back what we lost in the aging process which happens earlier and earlier," said Somers about being on hormone therapy after menopause. Doctors agree. Youthful, feminine skin starts with the hormone girls' ovaries have been producing their entire lives, estrogen. "It was no mystery to dermatologists. We know for a very long time that estrogens are very good for the aging of the skin.It prevents it. It helps reverse it," explained New Orleans dermatologist Dr. Mary Lupo. But for the first time in human history, women are living half of their lives after menopause, that's when the ovaries stop … Continue reading

Testosterone Linked to Weight Loss in Obese Men
Posted: Published on May 10th, 2012
When Levels Were Low, Testosterone Replacement Led to Lost Weight, Smaller Waists May 9, 2012 -- Testosterone replacement may promote weight loss in obese older men who have low levels of the male sex hormone, a new study shows. But before men try to lose weight by bumping up their testosterone, experts agree that more studies are needed to show that the treatment is both safe and effective. Researchers followed a group of mostly older, overweight men receiving injections of the hormone for up to five years to treat erectile dysfunction and other symptoms associated with low testosterone. Their findings were presented at the 19th European Congress on Obesity in Lyon, France. The men who were treated the longest lost more than 30 pounds on average over the course of the study, and also showed improvements in blood pressure, blood glucose, and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Researcher Farid Saad, DVM, says the dramatic weight loss came as a surprise. "This study was not performed for the purpose of promoting weight loss," he tells WebMD. "This was an incidental finding that was entirely unexpected." The study included middle-aged and older overweight or obese men with low testosterone levels being treated with testosterone … Continue reading

Sweeping Transgender Bill of Rights Approved in Argentina [Equality For All]
Posted: Published on May 10th, 2012
By the unanimous consent of all voting lawmakers, Argentina yesterday approved a gender rights package that will allow all adult citizens to change their sex at will even without undergoing surgery or hormone replacement therapy. However, should a person opt to make physical changes to their appearance, those treatments will be fully covered by their health care providers, whether public or private. The vote came on a day of celebration for equal rights advocates in the US who have long waited for a sitting president to support the right of same-sex couples to marry. However, gender rights remain in the dark ages, comparitively, with many hoops transgender Americans must jump through in order to have their sex change legally recognized. "This law is going to enable many of us to have light, to come out of the darkness, to appear," openly gay Argentinian legislator Osvaldo Lopez is quoted as saying. "There are many people in our country who also deserve the power to exist." Underage residents of the country will also be able to take advantage of the new rights, with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. Argentina's president, Cristina Fernandez, has already acknowledged her support for the … Continue reading

The benefits of testosterone pellet therapy
Posted: Published on March 29th, 2012
Pellet therapy has been around since the 1930sthe concept is probably about the same age as Premarin, but much like other bioidentical hormones, a lack of approval from the FDA has left the public fearful of the consequences of use. In 2008, the FDA gave its blessing to Slate Pharmaceuticals Testopel, bioidentical testosterone pellet therapy designed exclusively for men. As many have discovered the ease and effectiveness of this delivery method for testosterone, it has become increasingly popular for men and women. Testosterone delivered by pellet implant, has been used to treat migraines and menstrual headaches. It may also be an effective treatment for vaginal dryness, incontinence, urinary urgency and frequency. In both men and women, testosterone has been shown to increase energy, relieve depression, increase sense of well-being, relieve anxiety and improve memory and concentration. Testosterone pellets increase lean body mass (muscle strength, bone density) and decrease fat mass. Men and women need adequate levels of testosterone for optimal mental and physical health and for the prevention of chronic illnesses like Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease, which have been associated with low testosterone levels. In men, testosterone pellet therapy can improve erectile dysfunction (including throwing out your Viagra) and ensure … Continue reading

Hormone Therapy Complaint
Posted: Published on March 21st, 2012
A woman fighting depression thought she found an answer in a television commercial. But she claims to have received a hormone overdose instead. Hilary Jantzi said, I felt like someone pumped six cups of coffee in my system. I was shaking. I felt like I wanted to crawl out of my skin, my heart was racing. Hilary had paid about $1,500 for hormone therapy at HRC medical in west Omaha. The clinic is part of a national chain. Hilary went to a Nebraska doctor Carol Weckmuller who ran blood tests to measure testosterone. Dr. Weckmullers report said, Your level registered at twice the normal level for a woman. Dr. Weckmuller said, I do believe your current symptoms directly relate to the testosterone therapy. However a spokesman for HRC clinics sent an e-mail response to channel six news fact finders. HRC claims a 97 percent satisfaction rate with patients. The company states therapy does not result in overdoses of hormones. The Better Business Bureau's Nashville Tennessee office has given HRC clinics based there an "F" rating. The company offered Hilary a refund if she signs an agreement not to publicly complain about the treatment or take legal action. Hilary refuses to … Continue reading

Prolor begins Phase II pediatric growth hormone trial
Posted: Published on March 21st, 2012
Prolor Biotech Inc. (AMEX: PBTH; TASE: PBTH) has begun a Phase II clinical trial of its long-acting CTP-modified version of human growth hormone (hGH-CTP) in children with growth hormone deficiency. The pediatric trial to test the efficacy, safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic properties of weekly injections of hGH-CTP. It will take place at 35 sites in 12 countries. The trial will compare the 12-month growth rate of children receiving weekly injections of certain doses of hGH-CTP with children receiving daily injections of commercial hGH injected daily. The pediatric trial follows successful completion of a Phase II trial of hGH-CTP in growth hormone deficient adults, which demonstrated that the drug was safe and well tolerated, and has the potential to reduce injections of current human growth hormones from once a day to once a week. A subsequent pilot study suggested that bi-monthly dosing of hGH-CTP may also be feasible. The company plans to begin a Phase III trial of the drug on adults later this year. Growth hormone deficiency in children occurs when the pituitary gland fails to secrete adequate amounts of growth hormone. Growth hormone replacement therapy may enable a child to reach a normal height, but the therapy requires … Continue reading

Regenx® Medical Institute Expanding to Provide Better Hormone Replacement Therapy that can Protect Against Cancer
Posted: Published on March 16th, 2012
Regenx Medical Institute, a leading provider of customized Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) programs, is reacting to new studies on the benefits of HRT for men and women and the importance of medically supervised therapies versus self-medications. Bay Harbor, Miami, FL (PRWEB) March 16, 2012 A new landmark study from March 2012 has shown that certain estrogen replacement therapies after menopause protects against breast cancer even long after treatment is stopped. These therapies are design to fight the very common symptoms of female hormone imbalance such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, lower sex drive and a general feeling of fatigue. The study came from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a large US study of post-menopausal women launched in 1993. The results showed that women who had estrogen HRT for seven years were 20 percent less likely to develop breast cancer compared to a control group that only received placebo treatment. This positive effect also lasted for more than five years after the therapy ended. Doctors emphasized that the benefit had to be balanced against stroke and blood clot risks that resulted from Hormone Replacement Therapy. They recommended taking hormones at the lowest dose possible and balancing the medication with regards to … Continue reading

State officials want hormone treatment chain to close NC offices
Posted: Published on March 16th, 2012
Raleigh, N.C. State officials have sent warning letters to a national chain of medical offices that offer hormone replacement therapy, recommending that it close its North Carolina operations because it doesn't have a license to practice in the state. HRC Medical operates 37 Hormone Replacement Centers in 21 states, including offices in Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte. The company promises its treatments can provide relief for issues like fatigue, sexual dysfunction and depression. Dr. Dan Hale, HRC's founder, resigned unexpectedly last week, just as Tennessee officials began targeting the chain, questioning the quality of care patients receive. The North Carolina Medical Board rejected Hale's application for a medical license in December, determining that he had multiple felony convictions in the mid-1990s for racketeering and conspiracy to commit mail fraud and had lied on his application. The medical board has turned its findings over to the Wake County District Attorney's Office to determine if any criminal charges are warranted. On Tuesday, the board suspended the license of Dr. Clarence Washington, who oversaw HRC's Raleigh office, for 12 months, determining that he was only a "figurehead" who operated under Hale's direction and allowed nurses to handle hormone treatments without proper oversight. Last week, … Continue reading
