Posted: Published on August 1st, 2017

TELEVISION PARK Dr. Monte Hunter, chair of the MCG Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Dr. Sadanand Fulzele, bone biologist in orthpaedics are working together to better treat patients with osteoarthritis, commonly known as wear and tear arthritis. 30 million Americans have osteoarthritis and females tend to get it more often and worse. It can be very debilitating and they hope their work will ideally lead to better ways to identify and treat it. Here is the officuial release from the medical college: Protective fluid in the knee holds clues for why osteoarthritis is more common in females, and for improved diagnosis, treatment AUGUSTA, Ga. (June 19 , 2017) Researchers have more evidence that males and females are different, this time in the fluid that helps protect the cartilage in their knee joints. They have found in the synovial fluid of the knee joint, clear differences in the messages cells are sending and receiving via tiny pieces of RNA, called microRNA, in males and females with the common and debilitating condition osteoarthritis. The differences may help explain why the disease is more common in women as it points toward a more targeted way to diagnose and treat this wear and tear … Continue reading

What The Heck Is Vaginal Laser Therapy, And Should You Try It? – Prevention.com

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2017

Vaginal atrophy happens because estrogen levels plummet. "Some women get it a year after menopause and some dont get it for 10 years, says Lila Nachtigall, MD, a professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at NYU Langone Health. But rest assured, its coming! Besides turning penetrative sex into an unpleasant experience, untreated vaginal atrophy can also cause itching and burning. Lubricants can help ease the pain of penetration a bit, but Nachtigall believes the first course of treatment should be estrogen. That doesn't necessarily mean taking a pill, especially since studies have found that there are a lot of downsides associated with oral hormone replacement therapy. But the risks of localized estrogencreams, suppositories, or ringstend to be much lower, since the hormone doesn't need to go through your bloodstream to get where it's most needed. (Are out-of-whack hormones causing your stubborn belly fat? Find out here.) Along with these more traditional methods, one relatively new treatment thats been getting some attention is a laser therapy called the MonaLisa Touch. Maria Sophocles, MD, who runs Womens Healthcare of Princeton, was one of the first physicians in the U.S. to be trained on the FDA-approved machine, and she sings its … Continue reading

Estroven Sleep Cool for menopause is the answer to my prayers – ChicagoNow (blog)

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2017

Finally--after a few years of having private summers year round, I discovered that Estroven Sleep Cool for menopause is the perfect product for me. Because I have lupus, I had to be extra careful when choosing products for menopause relief. Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks itself. Damage or potential damage to internal and external organ systems may occur. The average healthy woman could consider hormone replacement therapy or HRT, for menopause relief. Menopause is simply the cessation of the menstrual period. With this comes diminished estrogen hormone levels, causing the dreadful hot flashes, night sweats and irritability. Menopausal women with lupus are instructed to be careful with hormone replacement therapy because the average specialist believes that blood clots and potential risks for breast cancer may be involved with it. My specialist told me right off the bat that she wasn't giving me any hormones so I pretty much had to suffer through the symptoms. However, I did work closely with my primary care doctor and the most she could do was prescribe me low doses of Paxil and Effexor. Don't get me wrong--those mild antidepressants worked for the hot flashes and sweating but it wasn't … Continue reading

The desire to build stronger and faster athletes is never ending, and this has led to a never ending desire to unravel the science behind building better athletes. Appropriate exercise prescription and programming continues to undergo extensive research in the hopes of unlocking hidden clues to give athletes an edge. In addition, the science behind over the counter sports nutrition continues to move forward in the hopes of legally boosting athletic sports performance. But thanks to NDI guidelines (New Dietary Ingredients regulations) that have been drafted by the FDA, this side of the industry has hit a wall when it comes to ingredient innovation. It will now cost any raw material manufacturer a lot more money and time to validate a new material. In this industry a new ingredient typically means a synthetic duplicate of an existing ingredient found in minute amounts in nature, an extract of an active ingredient in an herb concentrated to larger amounts (ex: caffeine is naturally occurring … Continue reading

Hormone replacement therapies, or medications containing female hormones that substitute those no longer produced by the body, often are prescribed to reduce the effects of menopausal symptoms in women. Research has indicated that women who take hormone replacement therapies have a higher incidence of breast cancer. Now, researchers at theUniversity of Missouri have linked natural and synthetic progestins to the bodys production of specialized cancer cells that act like stem cells in humans. Findings could help scientists target these rare cells that proliferate in breast cancers and metastasize elsewhere, and may help clinicians identify immunotherapies to combat the spread of the disease. In previous studies, we have shown that both natural and synthetic progestins accelerate the development of breast cancer and increase their metastasis to lymph nodes, said Salman Hyder, the Zalk Endowed Professor in Tumor Angiogenesis and professor of biomedical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center. … Continue reading

Hypothyroidism: A Woman’s Guide to Fertility and Pregnancy – EmpowHer

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2017

A 2012 study in the Journal of Applied and Basic Medical Research found that 2 to 4 percent of childbearing age women have low thyroid hormone levels. This means there are a lot of women who are affected by the fertility issues caused by hypothyroidism. Keep reading to find out how having low thyroid hormone levels can lead to risks before, during, and after childbirth. Hypothyroidism and low thyroid hormone levels can affect many different aspects of menstruation and ovulation. Having low levels of thyroxine, or T4, or elevated thyroid-releasing hormone (TRH) leads to high prolactin levels. This can cause either no egg to release during ovulation or an irregular egg release and difficulty conceiving. Hypothyroidism can also cause a shortened second half of the menstrual cycle. This may not allow a fertilized egg enough time to attach to the womb. It can also cause low basal body temperature, high thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies, and ovarian cysts, which can lead to pregnancy loss ] or an inability to become pregnant. You should have your thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and T4 levels monitored prior to becoming pregnant. This is especially true if you have low thyroid hormones already or have had a … Continue reading

Cholesterol biosynthesis inhibitor RO 48-8071 reduces progesterone receptor expression and inhibits progestin … – Dove Medical Press

Yayun Liang,1,2,* Sandy Goyette,1,2,* Salman M Hyder1,2 1Department of Biomedical Sciences, 2Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA *These authors contributed equally to this work Abstract: Clinical trials and studies have shown that postmenopausal women undergoing combination hormone replacement therapy containing estrogen and progestin have an increased risk of breast cancer compared with women taking estrogen or placebo alone. Using animal models, we have previously shown that synthetic progestins, including medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), which is widely used clinically, accelerate breast cancer tumor growth and promote metastasis. Furthermore, we have found that MPA elevates CD44 protein expression and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, two markers of cancer stem cells (CSCs), and increases mammosphere formation, another hallmark of stem cells, in hormone-dependent T47-D human breast cancer cells. Herein, we show that RO 48-8071 (RO), an inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis, reduced MPA-induced CD44 protein expression in two hormone-dependent human breast cancer cell lines, T47-D and BT-474. Because we have previously shown that MPA induction of CD44 is progesterone receptor (PR) dependent, we examined ROs effects on PR protein and mRNA expressions in T47-D cells. PR mRNA levels remained unchanged after RO treatment; however, RO significantly reduced the protein expression of both … Continue reading
