Cholesterol biosynthesis inhibitor RO 48-8071 reduces progesterone receptor expression and inhibits progestin … – Dove Medical Press
Posted: Published on July 10th, 2017
Yayun Liang,1,2,* Sandy Goyette,1,2,* Salman M Hyder1,2 1Department of Biomedical Sciences, 2Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA *These authors contributed equally to this work Abstract: Clinical trials and studies have shown that postmenopausal women undergoing combination hormone replacement therapy containing estrogen and progestin have an increased risk of breast cancer compared with women taking estrogen or placebo alone. Using animal models, we have previously shown that synthetic progestins, including medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), which is widely used clinically, accelerate breast cancer tumor growth and promote metastasis. Furthermore, we have found that MPA elevates CD44 protein expression and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, two markers of cancer stem cells (CSCs), and increases mammosphere formation, another hallmark of stem cells, in hormone-dependent T47-D human breast cancer cells. Herein, we show that RO 48-8071 (RO), an inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis, reduced MPA-induced CD44 protein expression in two hormone-dependent human breast cancer cell lines, T47-D and BT-474. Because we have previously shown that MPA induction of CD44 is progesterone receptor (PR) dependent, we examined ROs effects on PR protein and mRNA expressions in T47-D cells. PR mRNA levels remained unchanged after RO treatment; however, RO significantly reduced the protein expression of both … Continue reading

Submitted information LIMA Employers in the greater West Central Ohio region will collect $33 million in rebates from the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation in checks that will be mailed beginning next week. BWC Administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison, in Lima to present a ceremonial check to local business leaders, said employers are free to spend their rebates as they wish, but she hopes they will consider investing in workplace safety. We work with employers all over Ohio to prevent injuries and illness in the workplace, and they will tell you that investing in safety is a wise business decision, said Morrison, speaking at a press conference at the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce. Safe workplaces mean fewer injuries, fewer medical claims and a stable workforce, all of which leads to a healthy bottom line for a business. Morrison was joined by chamber President/CEO Jed Metzger and Tony Daley of Limas Spallinger Millwright Services Inc. Metzger and Daley accepted the check on behalf of employers in the entire region, which includes Allen, Auglaize, Shelby, Hancock, Putnam, and Van Wert counties. Ohio Gov. John Kasich proposed the rebate in March. Its the third such rebate in the last four years, made possible by … Continue reading

Herb can help reduce menopause symptoms – Idaho State Journal
Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017
Treating menopausal symptoms is difficult in our current medical-legal quite confusing environment that seems to produce nothing but mixed data and differing opinions. It is always nice to see an alternative to hormone replacement therapy getting some data behind it as to its effectiveness. There is quite an array of natural remedies available out there, but very few have good clinical data as to their effectiveness. One supplement that has been used by alternative practitioners for a number years to treat menopausal symptoms such as anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and joint pain is Fennel. Fennel, as Im sure a number of you know, is an herb used in cooking. Fennel has essential oils and phytoestrogenic properties that give it a wonderful flavor, as well as its potential benefit in treating menopausal symptoms. A recent study published in the North American Menopause Society online journal Menopause showed that, compared to placebo, this herb greatly reduced menopausal symptoms, as listed above, when used as a method of intervention. As there are so many mainstream and alternative treatments for menopause and menopausal symptoms, its important that you sit and discuss potential interventions with your doctor to ensure there are no … Continue reading

Chemotherapy could trigger spread of cancer, research suggests – Blasting News
Posted: Published on July 8th, 2017
Scientists warn that chemotherapy could #Trigger more aggressive tumors and spread cancer cells. This kind of therapy could shrink tumors but when the cells migrate to other parts of the human body, they are almost always deadly. According to The Telegraph, George Karagiannis from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York found out that the number of #Cancer Cells in mice with breast cancer has increased in their body and in the lungs after undergoing chemotherapy. The medication used in the treatment is thought to trigger a repair mechanism in the body. However, this allows tumors to grow back stronger and more aggressive. In addition, the process of giving toxic medication to the body will also increase the number of doorways on the blood vessel which will allow cancer to spread. Dr. Karagiannis research has revealed that at least 20 patients have had an increased number of doorways after receiving two chemotherapy drugs. He suggests that health practitioners should be vigilant in monitoring if cancer cells are beginning to circulate. They also need to check if new doorways are emerging. The process of checking could be done by obtaining a small amount of the tumor after a … Continue reading

Study finds no such thing as menstrual brain fog – WDEF News 12
Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017
Contrary to what some have been led to believe, awomans monthly menstrual cycle doesnt seem to dampen her thinking skills, no matter what time of the month it is. Thats the finding of a small study that hopes to put to rest the idea that a woman isnt performing quite at her best during her period. There might be individual exceptions, but our study did not show a negative impact of hormonal changes on [thinking and memory], said the studys lead author, Brigitte Leeners. Shes the deputy head of reproductive endocrinology at University Hospital Zurich, in Switzerland. The researchers said its not just a pop culture myth or a persistent old wives tale that surrounds menstruation and thinking skills. There have been some scientific studies that have suggested that hormones and the way they cycle could affect how a woman thinks and performs. Play Video Health Wednesday Depending on your age, health, family history and other risk factors, screenings can help detect health problems early when they may be easier to For example, two previous studies suggested that when female hormones such as estrogen and progesterone are low, women may excel at visual and spatial tasks, skills normally considered more … Continue reading

Medicxi’s new fund jumps off the beaten biotech path to lead a $30M round for diabetes program – Endpoints News
Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017
Medicxi jumped far off the beaten biotech track and joined with some irregulars on the investment side for the first bet with its new venture fund, backing a late-stage development program targeted at diabetes one of the toughest gambles in R&D. The European VC led a $30 million round for Diasome Pharmaceuticals, a Cleveland-based biotech thats developing a new tech aimed at amping up the effectiveness of insulin. Joining with Medicxi: JDRF T1D Fund in Boston, Black Beret Life Sciences in Houston and an investor group led by McDonald Partners. The move comes just a few weeks after Medicxi unveiled their new $300 million fund, looking for more advanced clinical programs to back on both sides of the Atlantic. Michle Ollier Diasome has a Phase III-bound program in the clinic that adds Hepatocyte Directed Vesicles to commercially available insulin. Essentially, its a piggyback tech that marries liver-targeting molecules with insulin, delivering them unchanged where it can do the most good. Its currently in a Phase IIb trial. For some time now, diabetes has been a no-go zone for biotechs, which typically cant afford a late-stage program on their own in an industry dominated by a handful of giants like Eli … Continue reading

What Happens When Chelsea Manning’s DNA Becomes An Artist’s Material? – HuffPost
Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017
As an artist and a scientist,Heather Dewey-Hagborgis used to questioning where science and technology are headed and how their trajectories might affect our lives. Making people uncomfortable is really squarely the point of my work, she wrote in an email to HuffPost. For example, her projectStranger Visions consists of a series of portraits based solely on human DNA shed gathered from discarded items found in New York City think: hair, cigarettes, gum. Most recently, Dewey-Hagborg has been collaborating with a rather unlikely partner: Chelsea Manning. Together, theyve created a series of portrait masks derived from Mannings DNA, retrieved while she was incarcerated and undergoing hormone replacement therapy. I guess [theyre] a bit creepy on purpose, she explained of the portraits, on view this August at Fridman Gallery in New York City. But hopefully a creepiness that provokes cultural reflection. Photo by: Thomas Dexter As much of the world knows by now, Manning shot to fame in 2013 after she published thousands of secretdocuments related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars on Wikileaks, unveiling disturbing accounts of torture and abuse by U.S. soldiers.Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison, the longest sentence ever handed down to a government whistleblower. The day … Continue reading
