Don’t Use Combined Estrogen, Progestin for Chronic Conditions in Postmenopausal Women – AAFP News

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Furthermore, the task force recommended against the use of estrogen for the prevention of chronic conditions in postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy -- also a "D" recommendation. The median age for menopause is 51.3. Because the postmenopausal change in hormone levels can raise women's risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis and fractures, physicians previously recommended hormone therapy for these women. Menopausal hormone therapy refers to the use of estrogen and progestin in women with an intact uterus, or estrogen alone in women who have had their uterus removed, taken during or after menopause. Once the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) published its findings(www.nhlbi.nih.gov) that hormone therapy use is associated with serious adverse health effects, use of menopausal hormone therapy declined sharply. During the years 1988-1994, 44 percent of U.S. women said they use or had used hormone therapy; 4.7 percent said they used or had used it in 2010. "The benefits of using menopausal hormone therapy to prevent chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes do not outweigh the harms in women who have gone through menopause," said USPSTF member Maureen Phipps, M.D., M.P.H., in a news bulletin.(www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org) This draft recommendation is consistent with the USPSTF's … Continue reading

Bioidentical Hormone Restorative Therapy – Why Haven’t You Heard Of It? – HuffPost UK

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017

Bioidentical Hormone Restorative Therapy - Why Haven't You Heard of It? To answer that - because taking hormones is considered a controversial topic. This would be due to the outcome of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study which was halted ahead of schedule, in 2002, after it was found that HRT (hormone replacement therapy), a combo drug of synthetic oestrogens and progestins commonly known as PremPro, increased the risk of both heart disease and breast cancer. However, not all hormone therapies that are prescribed and taken are created equally. HRT and BHRT (bioidentical hormone restorative therapy) are two very different therapies. Unfortunately, since the WHI study, both synthetic and bioidentical hormones have been bundled together as 'bad' and disease-causing. This, of course, is totally untrue. We have bundled the very ugly and very bad (HRT) together with the very, very good (BHRT) and classified them ALL as 'scary'! We are looking at two very different scenarios here: hormones that cause disease - synthetic - and hormones that protect from disease - bioidentical. It is important for everyone to understand the difference between these two forms of hormones and their therapies - synthetic and bioidentical - and to have the correct … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Therapy Tied to Hearing Loss | Health …

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017

FRIDAY, May 12, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Hearing loss has been linked to several factors associated with menopause, a new study says. One factor is your age at menopause. An older age is tied to a higher risk of hearing troubles. And, a second factor is the use of oral hormone therapy to ease some of the symptoms of menopause. The researchers also found that the longer a woman used hormone therapy, the greater the odds of hearing issues. Hearing loss was already known to be more common in women after menopause, a time when natural hormone levels drop. Because of this, doctors had suspected that the use of oral hormone therapy might offer some protection against menopause-linked hearing loss, the researchers said. "The finding from this observational study that women who underwent menopause at a later age and used oral hormone therapy had greater hearing loss was unexpected but should lead to more testing in a randomized, clinical trial," JoAnn Pinkerton, executive director of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), said in news release from the group. The current study can only show an association between hearing loss and hormone therapy or older age at menopause. It wasn't designed … Continue reading

DEAR DOCTOR: I am 60-year-old female who suffers from darkening of my face. A doctor did a biopsy and it was determined that I suffer from melasma, which began as soon as I hit menopause. Dermatologists seem unable to help. What can I do? DEAR READER: Melasma is the hyperpigmentation of the skin that occurs mostly upon the sun-exposed areas of the face. This manifests as darker patches of skin that can be irregular and, when severe, cause significant cosmetic disfigurement, which can have a significant impact upon one's social life and the ability to enjoy leisure activities. It has been linked primarily to various alterations in female hormones. In fact, 90 percent of cases occur in women. Potential melasma-inducing changes occur in the third trimester of pregnancy, when estrogen and progesterone levels are higher, and among women who take oral contraceptives. The breast cancer drug tamoxifen, which blocks estrogen receptors, also has been linked to the condition, and -- for melasma of the arms -- so has hormone replacement therapy. Menopause may increase the chance of getting melasma in other areas beside the face. Because the condition occurs upon sun-exposed areas, the first intervention you can do is to … Continue reading

For me, I couldnt understand why I was feeling so low, Sabato tells Newsmax Health.
