Don’t Fall for These Pharma Scare Tactics – The Epoch Times

Posted: Published on May 4th, 2017

Long before the Internet and direct-to-consumer advertising, the medical profession tried to reassure people about their health concerns. Remember take two aspirins and call me in the morning? Flash forward to todays online symptom checkersquizzes to see if someone has a certain disease and exhortations to see their doctor even if they feel fine. Once Pharma discovered that health fears and even hypochondria sell drugs, there seems to be no end to the new diseases, symptoms and risks people need to worry about. This ad appeared in Canadian publications in 2002. (Sandra Cohen-Rose and Colin Rose/Flickr/CC BY 2.0) In fact, since drug ads began on TV, Americans take so many drugs it inspires satirical T-shirts like the one that says I take aspirin for the headache caused by the Zyrtec I take for the hay fever I got from Relenza for the uneasy stomach from the Ritalin I take for the short attention span caused by the Scopoderm I take for the motion sickness I got from the Lomotil I take for the diarrhea caused by the Xenical for the uncontrolled weight gain from the Paxil I take for the anxiety from Zocor I take for my high cholesterol because … Continue reading

In honor of Mothers Day, I will discuss women and eye health. There are many diseases that cause vision loss. The most common diseases are: age-related macular-degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. According to Prevent Blindness America, which is a volunteer organization that fights blindness and saves sight, the amount of Americans with age-related eye disease is expected to double in the next three decades. They also said that of the 4.1 million people who are older than 40 and have poor eyesight or are blind, 2.6 million of them are women. Here are some facts about women vs. men when it comes to eye health. In America, women are living longer than men. The United States Census Bureau data shows that there are double the amount of women living over the age of 85, while men are dying younger. Since women are outliving men, women are naturally more prone to developing age-related eye disease. In addition to the four most common eye diseases, women are more likely to have refractive errors such as near/far sightedness and astigmatism. These can cause significant vision problems but easily treatable with contact lenses, glasses or procedures such as LASIK. To figure out if … Continue reading

Low-dose Aspirin Might Reduce Risk of Most-common Breast Cancer – Voice of America

Posted: Published on May 3rd, 2017

Low-dose aspirin might help fend off breast cancer, according to a new study. Researchers at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center noted an overall 16 percent reduction in breast-cancer risk among the 57,000 women who took an 81-milligram dose of aspirin three or more times a week. The most striking finding, according to researchers, was the effect the aspirin had on the most common form of breast cancer, known as estrogen or progesterone receptor positive HER2-negative breast cancer. The risk of developing that subtype was reduced by 20 percent. The participants, part of the California Teachers Study that began in 1995, filled out questionnaires that included their exercise, smoking and drinking habits, family history of cancer and medications they took, including hormone replacement therapy. By 2013, almost 1,500 women reported having developed invasive breast cancer. The reduction in breast cancer risk in the City of Hope study was seen in comparison to the results of other large studies investigating the possible benefits of higher-dose aspirin and other painkillers. The study's findings were published online in the journal Breast Cancer Research. Investigators did not see a breast-cancer risk reduction among women who took regular-strength aspirin or other types of painkillers. … Continue reading

Promising Results in a New Approach to Treating Hot Flashes – Medical News Bulletin

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2017

MLE4901, a drug used for treatinghot flashes in menopausal women, has a unique mechanism of action; it targets the area of the brain responsible for inducing hot flashes. In a recently completed Phase 2 clinical trial, MLE4901 significantly decreased the incidence and severity of hot flashes. Menopause occurs when the ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone and is diagnosed when a woman has not menstruated for 12 months. Declining estrogen levels are accompanied by symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, lack of libido, irritability, and anxiety. Hot flashes are often reported as the most troublesome symptom; 70% of menopausal women report hot flashes and at least 10% of women find them intolerable. A hot flash is exactly as it soundsan intense feeling of heat. When a hot flash occurs blood vessels in the skin dilate, the surface temperature of the skin rises, and the patient feels overheated. Past studies have suggested that the neuropeptide neurokinin B (NKB) and its receptor (NK3R) are responsible for triggering hot flashes. Located in the hypothalamus, a region of the brain responsible for regulating temperature, NKB neurons change in response to a lack of sex hormones. When NKB is introduced intravenously to … Continue reading

Beyond the Binary: Gender that extends far beyond assigned sex – Iowa State Daily

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2017

I am a ______. The simple fill in the blank question was posed by Christiana Langenberg, lecturer in womens and gender studies, at the beginning of one her classes. Students had 30 seconds to fill in the blank with as many answers they could think of to fit the statement. College student, daughter, brother, English major, actress, man, non-binary person and various other options were submitted by the students. Langenberg encouraged them to look back and see what answers correlated directly with their gender identity. That blank can be filled with anything depending on the day, Langenberg said. For example, if youre in the check-out lane in Target one day and someone says, Sir, I can help you over here! but you identify as anything other than a man, you may be more inclined to say, I am a woman, or I am agender. Agender, as Langenberg mentioned, is one of many ways an individual can identify outside of what is called the gender binary. People who identify within the gender binary tend to be cisgender men or women, that is to say, consider their gender to be aligned with the sex they were assigned at birth. For an agender … Continue reading

Savage Love Letter of the Day: His Wife Wants Him Hard But Hates the Boner Pills That Get Him Hard – TheStranger.com

Posted: Published on April 29th, 2017

I am a 47-year old man and I have been married to my wife for 20 years. We have been together for 23 years. Around age 44 or 45, I started having ED problems. My urologist prescribed Cialis and put me on hormone replacement therapy. My wife was OK with the testosterone, but acted disappointed about the Cialis. For example, she would act all excited about how we just had sex without any pillsonly for me to say, yes, I did take one. Then she would mope. I explained several times that I find this very hurtful and insulting. If it were a problem about my not being attracted to her, then the Cialis would not help. The fact that it is a medical condition that can be treated should make her feel better, not worse. Saying that non-Cialis sex is somehow better or purer implies that there is something wrong with my needing it. Gee, I really need to feel there is something wrong with me to perform better! Nothing like pressure to help with ED, right? By the way, I don't tell her there is anything wrong when she needs to use lube or a vibrator. The frequency … Continue reading
