Menopause is surrounded by unhealthy misinformation – The Sydney Morning Herald

Posted: Published on April 29th, 2017

There comes a time in every woman's life (for argument's sake, let's say it's around 48) that she can no longer ignore the elephant in the room. Andso during a recent visit to a women's health clinic I finally broached the menopause talk. When I mentioned hormone replacement therapy (HRT, the medical replacement of a woman's oestrogen and progesterone and, sometimes, testosterone) the nurse's eyebrows almost took flight. "HRT can really help manage the symptoms of menopause and it's safe," she added a little too quickly. She went on to tell me that few women my age enquired about HRT. She suspected that they simply didn't trust it. This didn't come as a complete surprise. I'd recently read that since the early 2000s, the number of women taking HRT had fallen by more than 60 per cent. This downward trend was reflected in women I know: of the 10 menopausal and post-menopausal women I spoke with for this article, only two had chosen HRT. Several told me that their symptoms weren't severe or long-lasting enough to warrant intervention, others had looked at alternative medicine, but a few were still, some years down the track, suffering from anxietyand those interminable hot … Continue reading

Doctor says testosterone therapy can provide relief for women – The Daily Tribune

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2017

Testosterone, widely and misleadingly understood to be the male hormone, may provide relief to women experiencing the symptoms of menopause, according to a Shelby Township-based physician and many other experts. Dr. Charles Mok recently published the book Testosterone: Strong Enough for a Man, Made for a Woman, which educates readers about the benefits of natural hormone replacement therapy. Mok released the book, his first, in March. It costs $25.99 and is available on Amazon. The evidence for testosterone therapy is overwhelming, and we want to get the message to doctors and, importantly, to their patients, Mok said. Advertisement Men produce 10 times more testosterone than women, but in their early reproductive years women have 10 times more testosterone than estrogen coursing through their bodies. Many experts believe that its the loss of testosterone, and not estrogen, that causes women in midlife to tend to gain weight, feel fatigue and lose mental focus, bone density and muscle tone as well as their libido. Mood swings, anxiety and hot flashes are other common symptoms. Testosterone therapy, delivered in the form of a tiny pellet the size of a grain of rice that is inserted underneath the skin, is believed to keep women … Continue reading

Australian Govt Booklet Tells ‘Gender Diverse’ Teens to Consider Sex Change Surgery – Heat Street

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2017

The state government of Victoria in Australia had funded the production of a guide encouraging gender diverse teenagers to undergo hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery. Created by a government-backed youth organization called Minus18, the OMG Im Trans booklet encourages young people to embrace their gender identity and provides them with tips on coming out, speaking to doctors, and other issues. The freely available guide revolves around the topic of gender, and says that having to deal with gendered expectations is all a bit bullshit. When were born were assigned a sex, its written on our birth certificate and then all these things the TV shows we watch, our schools, the toilets we use shape how we feel and how were supposed to act. But that little piece of paper doesnt always align with how we feel about our own gender, it states. For a lot of people gender might not be strictly male or female, the guide continues. I could be somewhere in between, or something else entirely! I have friends who experienced gender more fluidly, it can shift and change over time. The guide contains an entire section on medical transition despite repeatedly stating that gender is by … Continue reading

Here's how it works The two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, co-exist in a very delicate balance, and any variations of that balance can have an effect on your health. The amounts of these hormones that the woman's body produces every month can vary, depending on factors including age, nutrition, stress, exercise or ovulation or the lack of it. Our hormones begin falling off starting with perimenopause when hormones drop you back to the same range that a girl went through at the time when she was youngger that time between adrenarchy and puberty. Science vs all-natural: Which is better for hot flushes? | Starts at 60 – Starts at 60

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

If you see a female friend or colleague sitting in front of a desk fan in winter while everyone else is shivering in sweaters, chances are she is having a hot flush, courtesy of the menopause. Hot flushes and night sweats are the most common symptoms of the female reproductive milestone. The menopause is often blamed for a host of other symptoms such as insomnia, joint pains, depression and mood swings, vaginal dryness and difficulty concentrating. Hot flushes can last for years and be debilitating, and conventional treatments such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and antidepressants come with risks. HRT increases the chance of developing potentially deadly clots in the leg veins; a small increase in breast cancer risk has also been reported. Because of these risks, women may turn to herbal products that are purportedly safer and have fewer side effects. A native American root called black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is included in many such treatments used for hot flushes. The root has a long history of use in Europe and became popular around the world after receiving German approval as a non-prescription drug for hot flushes in 2000. In Australia, it is sold in various formulations and promoted … Continue reading

She relies on advice from her friends about how much medication she should take and how often. When I dont use hormones regularly I turn back into a boy, Im no longer smooth like a girl, she told the AFP. In 2015, Vietnam updated its laws to recognise the true gender of peoplewho had undergone gender reassignment surgery. Oestrogen patch shortage ‘devastating’ disruption to HRT treatment … – The Sydney Morning Herald

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2017

Without her medication, Tris Raouf vomits, breaks into sweats and has migraines so painful, it feels like her head is being stabbed. So when she discovered it was out of stock almost a month ago, the 75 year-old was petrified. Ms Raouf has been prescribed oestrogen patches for more than 20 years. The hormone replacement therapy is mostly used to treat women with menopausal symptoms, which can include mood swings, hot flushes, vaginal dryness and aches and pains. But a shortage has left more than 60,000 Australian women struggling to buy it. "This is devastating for many, many women," Ms Raouf said. "In some cases it literally keeps them alive and in others greatly improves their quality of life." Ms Raouf, who will need the patches for the rest of her life, is angry she wasn't warned. "If it was Viagra, it would have been solved overnight and there would be one heck of a stink," she said. "They think we are funny old chooks, but I'm virtually dead without it." The Health Department has confirmed a shortage in the oestrogen patch Ms Raouf uses, called Estradot, along with another type which combines progesterone, called Estalis. The manufacturer, Swiss pharmaceutical … Continue reading
