Women on hormone replacement therapy are living longer as menopause treatment cuts death risk by 30% – The Sun
Posted: Published on March 13th, 2017
A study has found thatHRT helps stop arteries becoming clogged with plaque which can trigger fatal heart attacks and strokes WOMEN on hormone replacement therapy tend to live longer, a study says. Taking the menopause relief treatment has survival benefits and cuts the overall risk of death by 30 per cent, experts claim. Canopy One reason is that HRT helps stop arteries becoming clogged with plaque which can trigger fatal heart attacks and strokes, the scientists found. The aim of HRT is to replace oestrogen and progesterone the body stops producing at menopause. Some experts believe oestrogen helps the heart by cutting cholesterol and aiding blood flow by making vessels more flexible. But controversially, other research links it to cancer and deep vein thrombosis. In the most recent study on plaque build-up, researchers analysed the health records of more than 4,200 women. Each had been given a CT scan to measure atherosclerosis the amount of calcium in the hearts arteries. Alamy Higher levels indicate a build-up of plaque which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Overall, women on HRT were 20 per cent more likely to have a coronary calcium score of zero. They were 36 per cent … Continue reading

With the addition of Planned Parenthood New York, hormone replacement therapy is now being offered in 16 different states in the U.S.. The move comes at a pretty heated time when transgender equality and rights are under severe fire from the federal government. Just last week, the Justice and Education departments moved to rescind an Obama-era guideline protecting transgender students from discrimination based on their gender identity. Although this was an expected move, it nonetheless causedwaves throughout those communities fighting for equality for all LGBTQIA identities. As well, Planned Parenthood has seen better days, as theyve consistently faced legislation that threatens to defund … Continue reading

Hormone Therapy Can Improve Weight Loss: Study | NBC 5 Dallas … – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
Posted: Published on March 5th, 2017
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 38 percent of American adults are considered clinically obese and 71 percent are overweight. Research shows that hormone imbalance can have a huge impact on this back-and-forth weight gain. Wellness experts are seeing how balancing the hormones can help with weight loss. Terri DeNeui, MSN, APRN-BC , a nurse practitioner and owner of Evexias Medical Centers, said the benefits of hormone replacement therapy go beyond increased energy levels, mood and libido. After we would get their hormones balanced and some key nutrients in their thyroid, they would come back the next time and say, Wow Ive lost 10 to 15 pounds and I didnt even try, whats that about, detailed DeNeui. Thats what happened to Brandy Prince, MSN, NP-C, a nurse practitioner, who had no energy, and a pattern of losing and gaining weight over and over. I was obese at 208 pounds and I felt terrible. I felt terrible about myself. I got out of bed every morning and everything just hurt, Prince said. Using pellets that are inserted under the skin, Prince got testosterone, which helped her build muscle and her thyroid levels were increased. She slept better and … Continue reading

Studies provide fuller picture of testosterone benefits, risks – KFGO
Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017
Wednesday, February 22, 2017 7:03 a.m. CST By Andrew M. Seaman (Reuters Health) - For men with low levels of testosterone, hormone-containing gels may offer a mixed bag of benefits and risks, according to a series of five new studies. Researchers found that for older men, hormone replacement therapy with testosterone gel might improve bone health and help avoid anemia, but it wouldn't help with thinking skills. Two studies looking at testosterone use and heart health produced mixed results. The new studies substantially improve the information available on testosterone treatment, said Susan Ellenberg, who co-authored four of the new studies. "There are definitely benefits and potential risks," said Ellenberg, a professor of biostatistics in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. "Its not an overwhelming conclusion that every man over 65 should be on this or stay away from it." Testosterone levels tend to decline as men age. Doctors sometimes prescribe testosterone gel - known as androgen replacement therapy. Four of the new studies are the last in a group of seven known as the Testosterone Trials, which evaluated the use of androgen replacement therapy in men over 65 with low testosterone unrelated to any … Continue reading

Heart disease different in women, but still just as deadly – Ahwatukee Foothills News
Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017
One interesting difference between men and women involves the cardiovascular system and the development of heart disease and subsequent symptoms. There is growing awareness that when a woman experiences symptoms of heart disease, these symptoms may differ from what is universally recognized as typical cardiac symptoms. This is because of the differences in the male and female cardiac physiology. Heart disease in men generally involves the larger blood vessels supplying heart muscle whereas in women, heart disease often involves the smaller vessels. For men, when the larger vessels become narrowed because of atherosclerosis (so called hardening of the arteries) and plaques of fatty deposits, blood flow to heart muscle decreases. This causes the crushing pressure-type of chest pain known as angina. On the other hand, in the female heart, the smaller vessels become blocked before the larger ones. So a womans angina is more likely to be vague and expressed as fatigue, nausea, and/or dizziness. A womans description of heart pain can frequently be less dramatic and therefore draw less attention and less urgency. When women seek care, their providers may be misled by the presenting symptoms and a diagnosis of heart disease may be missed. In fact a large … Continue reading

Postmenopausal hormone therapy may help prevent dementia – Bel Marra Health
Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017
Home Brain Function Alzheimers Postmenopausal hormone therapy may help prevent dementia The University of Eastern Finland has found an association between postmenopausal estrogen-based hormone therapy and a decreased risk of Alzheimers disease. Alzheimers is one of the most prevalent forms of dementia, especially among women, so these findings indicate that the female sex hormonesestrogen and progesteronemay be useful in preventing its onset and preserving cognitive ability in women. This link was discovered using a variety of studies that followed approximately 230,000 Finnish women that were undergoing long-term postmenopausal estrogen-based hormone therapy over the course of 20 years. This long-term use of hormone replacement therapy was linked with better global cognition and episodic memory, as well as a lower risk of developing Alzheimers. However, short-term use was found to have no significant impact on the risk of dementia, meaning the treatments protective effects were only seen if done consistently over a long period of time. Also, one cohort displayed an increased risk of dementia after starting hormone therapy later in the postmenopausal period, meaning timing is also an important factor. This research shows that long-term postmenopausal hormone therapy may be useful in preventing or slowing cognitive decline and the progression of … Continue reading

Study finds testosterone replacement therapy reduces … – Medical Xpress

February 21, 2017 Men who used testosterone replacement therapy to treat symptoms of androgen deficiency had a 33 percent lower risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and stroke compared to those who did not receive any hormone therapy. The findings from the Kaiser Permanente study were published in JAMA Internal Medicine today. Androgen deficiency in men is characterized by lower levels of male sex hormones, specifically testosterone, as well as symptoms that include loss of sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, breast enlargement or tenderness, hot flashes, reduced energy, irritability and depressed mood. Similar to women, men experience a normal decline in sex hormone levels beginning in their 30s. The decline in men is gradual and occurs over a number of years. It is estimated that approximately one in 200 men under the age of 60 has testosterone levels below normal, but as many as two in 10 men over the age of 60 have low levels. Not all men with low testosterone levels have symptoms of androgen deficiency. Symptoms related to androgen deficiency can be treated with testosterone replacement therapy given by injection, orally or topically. Some recent studies, however, have raised concerns that testosterone replacement therapy may increase … Continue reading

Taking hormone replacement therapy for at least 10 years ‘can reduce dementia risk’ – Express.co.uk
Posted: Published on February 19th, 2017
GETTY A study of hundreds of thousands post menopausal women found those who used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for more than a decade were less likely to develop the devastating neurological disorder. The finding suggests the sooner patients begin the medication after reaching that time of life, the better. Dr Bushra Imtiaz, who presented the results in her doctoral thesis, said: The protective effect of hormone therapy may depend on its timing. It may have cognitive benefits if initiated at the time of menopause when neurons are still healthy and responsive. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, and two out of three cases are women. One possible explanation for the higher risk is they produce less of the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone after the menopause, which HRT replenishes. GETTY Oestrogen receptors are present throughout the body, including brain areas mainly affected in Alzheimer's. In lab experiments and animal studies, the hormone has been shown to protect against the loss of brain cells, or neurons. But studies on humans have yielded inconsistent results on the association between postmenopausal oestrogen based HRT and dementia risk. GETTY Dr Imtiaz, of the University of Eastern Finland, explored the association between … Continue reading
