Posted: Published on June 21st, 2018
Virginia Mason is home to a state-of-the-art hyperbaric medicine facility in Seattle, run by one of the nations most experienced and well-trained teams. In hyperbaric oxygen therapy, patients breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. Hyperbaric chambers are well known for treating scuba diving accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning and other emergencies. Hyperbaric therapy also stimulates healing by helping the body grow new blood vessels and carrying oxygen to tissues. This is especially useful for treating tissue that is injured by radiation therapy, as well as some types of severe diabetic wounds. Our Center for Hyperbaric Medicine has been a leader in its field for more than four decades. Were Washington states only hyperbaric facility that is accredited with distinction by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. This ensures we have the best equipment, staff, training and safety. And it means we can deliver the best possible care and give you the best chance to heal and recover. Heres what sets us apart: Our treatment chamber is the size of an aircraft fuselage big enough for patients to stand up, or read and play games during treatment, instead of being confined to a Plexiglas tube. We're the only facility in Western … Continue reading →

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy – Wound Care – New York City – Bronx
Posted: Published on June 14th, 2018
The Hyperbaric Medicine Program at Montefiore, which emphasizes a focus on wound care, is a leading referral resource for hyperbaric medicine in New York. We heal chronic wounds and can often salvage limbs from risk of amputation, especially for patients who have compromised immune systems or diabetic foot ulcers. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a complementary treatment to overall wound therapy. During HBOT, a patient lies comfortably in an acrylic oxygen chamber and breathes 100 percent pure oxygen. This process helps fight infections, eliminates harmful toxins and promotes the growth of new blood vessels. These conditions are responsive to HBOT: Each patient at the Hyperbaric Medicine Program has a customized care plan developed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, including: vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, podiatrists, orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitative medicine experts, infectious disease specialists, nurses and technicians. We respond to the needs of the individual's wound before, during and after treatment. Each patient care plan includes a comprehensive approach to therapy and overall wound care as well as patient education. We assess the patient's baseline condition and determine if oxygen is critical to the healing of each wound. Our physicians also determine if the medical team can deliver enough oxygen to … Continue reading →

The Hyperbaric Medicine program at Westchester Medical Center, the flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), recently received Accreditation with Distinction from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) for its comprehensive hyperbaric oxygen therapy program that offers 24/7 services to the sickest patients in our region. Only 206 hyperbaric centers nationwide seek designation from the UHMS out of the thousands that offer the service and among that group, a mere 12% of the centers receive the notable Accreditation with Distinction designation. This is due to the societys 1,600-criteria survey that assesses factors including a centers 24/7 availability, the number of physicians trained to provide the service (24 at Westchester Medical Center) and the academic nature of the program in a tertiary care facility. Westchester Medical Centers hyperbarics program has the highest acuity patients in our region, some with complicated wounds that have failed treatment at other facilities and have persistent symptoms, and others with effects of prior radiation, carbon monoxide poisoning, sudden vision loss and traumatic injuries, said Kausik Kar, MD, Medical Director of the Hyperbaric Unit at Westchester Medical Center. We are proud to have received this distinction for our comprehensive program and exceptional team of … Continue reading →
Hyperbaric Medicine – Lourdes Health System
Posted: Published on May 30th, 2018
Most people have heard of scuba divers entering hyperbaric chambers for emergency treatment of decompression sickness, also known as the bends. Lately, some athletes have also used the sealed chambers, claiming that breathing pure oxygen at high pressures for extended periods can heal sports injuries and improve musculoskeletal recovery. A patient undergoes hyperbaric oxygen treatment at the Center for Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Camden. But for each of those uses, many other individuals and patients have availed themselves of this type of therapy, known as HBOT or hyperbaric oxygen therapy, for more common medical conditions and a growing list of such conditions, at that. HBOT for wound healing, for example, has become an important treatment in wound care and is the most prominent and common application of this expanding form of therapy. The branch of medicine that provides this HBOT for wounds and many other applications is called Hyperbaric Medicine. Lourdes Health System is pleased to offer hyperbaric medicine services at both of our hospital locations, at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County. Together, Lourdes is helping to lead the region in making … Continue reading →
