Questions about use of IVF procedure for men
Posted: Published on January 20th, 2015
A medical worker works on an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) station on Febuary 2, 2011 at the Erasmus Hospital in Brussels. GEORGES GOBET/AFP/Getty Images Although use of an IVF treatment for male infertility, known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), has doubled in the past decade, the procedure is not always associated with better outcomes, according to a new study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. The procedure, which was introduced in 1992, made it possible for many infertile men to father children. "In the pre-ICSI days, couples with severe male infertility would frequently have to resort to donor insemination, thus eliminating the possibility of the man to be the genetic parent," explained one expert, Dr. Avner Hershlag, chief of the Center for Human Reproduction at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. "There are now millions of children and adults whose fathers had deficient sperm, and it is because of ICSI that they have been created," said Hershlag, who was not involved in the new study. IVF babies see health improvement with fewer underweight or stillborn
Posted: Published on January 20th, 2015
Sperm is injected into a human egg during IVF treatment. Photograph: Zephyr/Getty Images/Science Photo Library RF The health of artificially conceived children has steadily improved in the last 20 years with fewer babies being born prematurely or affected by low birth weight, research has shown. The number of babies conceived using assisted reproductive technology (ART) who are stillborn, or die within the first year of life, has also fallen. The findings come from an analysis of data on more than 92,000 children in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, the largest long-term investigation into the health of ART babies ever carried out. Dr Anna-Karina Aaris Henningsen, from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, who led the research published online in the journal Human Reproduction, said: During the 20-year period of our study, we observed a remarkable decline in the risk of being born pre-term or very pre-term. The proportion of single ART babies born with a low or very low birth weight less than 2,500 grams or 1,500 grams respectively also decreased. The rates for stillbirths and death during the first year declined among both singletons and twins, and fewer ART twins were stillborn or died during the first year compared … Continue reading

IVF Baby Possible after Tubal Sterilization
Posted: Published on January 17th, 2015
Women who want to have a baby after tubal sterilization and undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) are likely to be as successful as their subfertile peers who have IVF, according to a study from Australia January 16, 2015 By Reuters Staff NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who want to have a baby after tubal sterilization and undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) are likely to be as successful as their subfertile peers who have IVF, according to a study from Australia. In a paper online now in Contraception, the researchers say there is a "paucity of studies evaluating IVF success in women with previous tubal sterilization. Although IVF studies often include sterilized women in their overall sample, they do not separately report IVF success on this subgroup. Women who wish to have a baby after sterilization have a choice between reversal and IVF treatment; however, there are few data on the likelihood of live delivery from these two options to inform them." To investigate, Dr. Eva Malacova of the University of Western Australia in Crawley and colleagues took a look back at first live births from IVF in women with a history of tubal sterilization. The women were 20 to … Continue reading

PA Proud parents Giani and Zeljko welcomed their smiling little girl at Manchester's St Mary's Hospital. The child, who weighed 8lb 14oz, is believed to be Britain's first baby of the new year. Proud dad Zeljko, who works as a self-employed courier, described his first child as "absolutely perfect". He added that his wife, who underwent IVF treatment, and Maya, the baby girl the course of IVF helped create, were both in great condition. GETTY The 47-year-old father told the Daily Mirror: "She was due on December 26 so we have been waiting for a few days. "It was touch and go whether or not she was going to be born in 2015. "I thought it was going to be the 31st or the 1st. Obviously, I was hoping for January 1." "Everything is perfect. Absolutely perfect. This is our first child and it's only taken me 47 years to do it," he added. Go here to read the rest: Britain welcomes the first babies of 2015 … Continue reading
