Twins joy for TV’s Julia Bradbury

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

Television presenter Julia Bradbury and her Irish partner Gerard Cunningham have revealed that she is expecting twins after undergoing five rounds of IVF treatment. The 44-year-old and developer Cunningham are already parents to three-year-old son Zephyrus, and the twins are due to be born in the spring. Speaking to Hello! Magazine, Bradbury said: "I'm completely overjoyed. The prospect of having two for one is just incredible. "Starting later in life having children, I didn't ever think I'd have a big family. Zeph was the unexpected miracle and I was thrilled and happy to have him. It's taken a long time to get to this stage so the prospect of going from one to three is utterly amazing." She added: "I am slightly guarded and I'm not taking anything for granted. This whole process is very much about milestones - getting to the next stage - so it's quite a rollercoaster. "We've got to be ultra, ultra careful, really cautious and try to stay as healthy, calm and comfortable as possible." Of Cunningham's support, she said: "He knows what I've been going through and said if he could do it, he would have. But he's equally passionate about siblings for Zeph … Continue reading

IVF treatment to be offered to couples in Vale of York

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2014

COUPLES in the Vale of York have finally won access to fertility treatment on the NHS. Health chiefs at NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) received the green light from its Governing Body today to press ahead with plans to provide IVF. York had been the only area in the country not to provide a single cycle of the treatment. The move comes after a year of indecision from the CCG which, having said it would provide the treatment, backtracked on the decision in August saying it would cost too much. But having revised the potential demand from couples it has todaybeen decided it is affordable. Dr Emma Broughton, a local GP and the CCGs Clinical Lead for Womens Health said she was delighted by the change in the commissioning position. She said: Im so proud to be part of the team at the CCG that has championed the provision of local IVF services and helped to change, for the first time in several years, the commissioning position for the Vale of York." Nearly 1000 people had signed a petition against the "postcode lottery" - calling for York to bring its policy in line with the rest of … Continue reading

Kerala hospital develops new infertility cure

Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The new methodology called Endometrial Receptor Gene Assay (ERGA) developed by Craft Hospital and Research Centre, Kodungallur in Trichur district, helped 13 women majority of them with recurrent implantation failures to conceive successfully. The beneficiaries included a woman of Kerala origin with three successive IVF treatment failures in Australia. Her fourth conventional method of treatment at Craft also proved to be a failure. This prompted the Craft doctors to examine expressions of genes in the endometrine layer (inner layer) of her uterus. The examination revealed that the genes which help the embryo to remain in the uterus were very weak. The expressions of around 300 genes which are essential for conceiving a baby were observed through ERGA, a real time PCR technology developed by the Craft team. The IVF treatment conducted after giving medication to her to make these genes stronger became successful. She thus became the mother of the first child to have born through this treatment method in India. The new methodology also helped another Australian couple with 12 years of primary infertility and7 recurrent implantation failures to get a healthy baby. According to Craft Medical Director Prof. Dr. C. Mohamed Ashraf, ERGA is … Continue reading

Safe IVF in New Zealand – experts respond

Posted: Published on November 25th, 2014

Safe IVF in New Zealand - experts respond November 6, 2014 New Zealand and Australia are world leaders when it comes to safe In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), according to a new report summarising the latest data from the two countries. The Assisted Reproductive Technology in Australia and New Zealand 2012 report contains data about IVF cycles undertaken in 2012 and the resulting babies born in 2012 and 2013. According to the report there were 5,177 assisted reproductive technology treatment cycles performed in New Zealand in 2012, leading to 1,286 babies born. According to the report, rates of IVF multiple births in New Zealand and Australia are among the lowest in the world (6.6% in Australia and 5.2% in New Zealand). Multiple births are a common result of IVF and present a risk to mothers and babies. New Zealand and Australia's low multiple birth rates are thanks to their focus on single-embryo transfer techniques. The report also notes that rates of IVF treatment in Australia are more than double that seen in New Zealand, likely due to different funding and eligibility criteria. Prof Wayne Gillett, Head of Department, Department of Women's & Children's Health, Dunedin School of Medicine, University of Otago … Continue reading

Whats next for the worlds 5 million IVF babies?

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

Making contact: a single sperm is injected directly into the egg using intracytoplasmic injection. Photograph: MedicalRF.com/Alamy When in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) began in 1978, some scientists were worried that the babies born as a result of it might suffer birth defects and health problems. Intensive research in the early years, and a thriving population that has now grown to more than 5 million IVF children worldwide, have reassured scientists, but they have not stopped studying and trying to improve the process. Recent discoveries in epigenetics the study of how environmental factors can affect gene activity, and how a persons risk of getting chronic diseases is programmed into them before they are even born have opened up new possibilities. In IVF, eggs are removed from the ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory before being placed in the uterus. Initially, women are often given drugs to suppress their menstrual cycles before taking fertility hormones designed to make them produce more eggs to be collected and fertilised. The technique can be used to overcome infertility caused by blocked fallopian tubes, reduced fertility in the male partner or unexplained infertility, among others. Researchers are looking into the subtle effects each part of the … Continue reading

Good Morning Britain presenter Charlotte Hawkins has revealed she was on the verge of starting IVF treatment when she finally fell pregnant. The broadcaster, who joined the ITV show from Sky News, said she had been trying for a baby with her husband Mark Herbert for several years. She told Hello! magazine: "It took a long while for it to sink in that I was pregnant because we'd been trying for quite some time - years, in fact. "We'd got to the stage where we'd started to think, 'Is this ever going to happen for us?' We'd actually just gone through the paperwork to go down the IVF route as we thought it might be the only option left for us - and even now there's a big part of me that won't quite believe it until I have my baby safely in my arms." Mark, who admitted he shed a tear when he heard the news, said it was "a huge relief". Hawkins said her co-hosts on the breakfast show were excited with her news. She said: "They were so thrilled at work, particularly because it's the first Good Morning Britain baby. "All the team have been brilliant - … Continue reading
