Matthew Shapland is appealing for Ipswich and East Suffolk CCG to reverse their decision not to give him funding for IVF treatment. Matt Bunn Wednesday, October 29, 2014 7:54 AM A Suffolk man who was told he and his partner will not be eligible for IVF treatment funding is today appealing for health chiefs to reconsider their decision. To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in. Matthew Shapland, of Felixstowe, suffers from cystic fibrosis, a condition which causes the majority of male suffers to be naturally infertile. The 23-year-old and his partner, who has a child from a previous relationship, applied to the Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) for exceptional funding for the treatment. They were hopeful of being successful because of Mr Shaplands condition, but at a meeting of the groups individual funding request panel last week, it was refused. Mr Shapland said: It has been really tough. When this landed on us, after going to hospital for tests and examinations, it did push me back a little bit. We are trying to see the positive side and hoping they do change their minds. I have only got one … Continue reading

Fertility treatment blow for women in Worcestershire.

Posted: Published on October 25th, 2014

WOMEN in Worcestershire will still not receive the recommended amount of paid for fertility treatment, despite warnings from a national health institute. Yesterday, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) warned that fewer than one in five commissioning groups are paying for the full number of IVF cycles recommended. Current Nice guidelines say the NHS should provide three full cycles of IVF treatment for women aged under 40 who have failed to get pregnant after two years of trying, or 12 cycles of artificial insemination. Women aged 40 to 42 should receive one full cycle if certain criteria are met. Despite the review, Worcestershire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) will continue to only fund two cycles of treatment. A spokesperson for the NHS South Worcestershire CCG, NHS Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG and NHS Wyre Forest CCG, said: Following the review of NICE fertility guidance and the new recommendations which followed, Worcestershire CCGs Clinical Commissioning Policy Collaborative reviewed its local policy for Infertility treatment. The financial implications of the updated guidance were modelled and the group considered all new aspects of the NICE guidance. "In reviewing the infertility policy the intention was to ensure that Worcestershire CCGs commission on an … Continue reading

Minister sparks backlash for suggesting foreigners could undergo ‘three-parent babies’ IVF treatment in Britain

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2014

The row surrounds mitochondrial DNA transfer, a technique that would offer parents at high risk of having children with severe disabilities such as muscular dystrophy a donor's DNA to mend genetic flaws. Legislation approving the procedure, which is outlawed in other European countries, is expected to be voted on later this year. The proposals have triggered fierce debate, with critics warning the "unethical" treatment would effectively create children with three parents and supporters saying it would help stop certain genetic defects from being passed on. Appearing before a Commons committee considering the legislation, Ms Ellison was asked whether the treatment would be made available to oversees citizens. "Over time we might expect that the procedure might be offered by centres to oversees patients," Ms Ellison said. "But that would be for individual clinics to assess each case and of course they would all have to work within the regulatory framework, and the clinics would assess the case and prioritise." Prof Sally Davies, the Government's Chief Medical Officer, added that "all oversees patients would pay the full cost" of treatment. Lord Allen, a cross-bench peer, said: "Turning the UK into a tourist destination, encouraging and enabling people to break the laws … Continue reading

Court dismisses IVF discrimination suit against government

Posted: Published on October 21st, 2014

The federal government did not discriminate against a desperate and distressed Canberra couple when it denied them early access to super to pay for an overseas IVF treatment, a court has found. The woman applied for release of her superannuation while struggling to overcome IVF failures in late 2010, describing her infertility as "the most devastating thing [she has] ever been faced with". She suffered from Turner syndrome, a genetic disorder causing underdeveloped ovaries and preventing the production of ova. Unable to find a voluntary IVF donor, she had travelled to the United States in 2009 so she could legally pay for eggs as part of an expensive IVF treatment. Advertisement The entire trip cost $200,000 but the IVF failed, prompting the couple to go to a local fertility specialist in Canberra as they prepared for a second cycle in the US. Lacking money, the doctor suggested the couple try to get early access to their superannuation to pay for the next trip. The woman applied to theAustralian Prudential Regulatory Authority, asking for access to her super fund on compassionate grounds. She said she was suffering chronic depression caused by her infertility, and that the IVF treatment would alleviate it. … Continue reading
