Photo: LucaLorenzelli/Getty Images UnitedHealthcare and United Behavioral Health will pay $15.6 million over federal and state investigations into alleged reduced mental health reimbursement rates that resulted in overcharges, according to the Department of Labor. An investigation by the DOL's Employee Benefits Security Administration and the New York State Attorney General discovered that, going back to about 2013, United reduced reimbursement rates for out-of-network mental health services, thereby overcharging participants for those services, and flagged participants undergoing mental health treatments for a utilization review, according to the investigation. This allegedly resulted in many denials of payment for those services, the agency said. Continue reading →

3 August 2021 Over 180 governors and experts have come together to commit to greater action on mental health as part of a joint initiative being spearheaded by the government and the United Nations to understand the impact of mental health in Kenya and urgent action that needs to be taken. Government at national and county levels, along with experts from academic, civil society and UN organizations reviewed opportunities and challenges in improving mental health in the country in a meeting hosted by the Ministry of Health. Mental health has been widely talked about in America recently with emotions surrounding the pandemic and the awareness movement led by athletes Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles. The question is:Is mental health finally being treated as a serious concern in this country, or is it impossible to improve systemic mental health conditions with Americas cultural expectations and economicpitfalls? Its certainly my hope that this pandemic will lead to real systemic changes, but theres absolutely going to need to be real things that cost money and that require work by legislators and decision makers beyond encouraging awareness that I think weve seen.
