Posted: Published on October 30th, 2012

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The C4C consortium today announced the implementation of France's first ever dedicated technical facility for the manufacture of cell therapy products. The C4C project (coordinated by CELLforCURE, a subsidiary of the leading French biopharmaceutical company LFB Biotechnologies) brings together the skills of two biotech companies (Celogos and CleanCells) and seven public-sector organizations and university medical centers (the French Blood Agency's [Etablissement Franais du Sang, EFS] directorates in the Aquitaine-Limousin and Pyrnes-Mditerrane regions of France, Bordeaux University Medical Center [CHU de Bordeaux], Lille University Medical Center/University of Lille 2 [CHU de Lille], Nantes University Medical Center, [CHU de Nantes] and the Biological Resource Center at Lyons University Medical Center [Banque de Tissus et de Cellules des Hospices Civils de Lyon]. The first five products are currently being developed, with a view to validating the facility dedicated to the routine production of clinical trial and therapeutic batches. This facility is located on LFB's site in Les Ulis, close to Paris. C4C is an ambitious project that has attracted 80 million euros in investment from the consortium members and 30 million euros in public-sector financial aid (provided by OSEO, France's state innovation agency). In fact, C4C was selected by OSEO as … Continue reading

Stem cell bodyguards

Public release date: 22-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Yivsam Azgad news@weizmann.ac.il 972-893-43856 Weizmann Institute of Science Hiding deep inside the bone marrow are special cells. They wait patiently for the hour of need, at which point these blood forming stem cells can proliferate and differentiate into billions of mature blood immune cells to help the body cope with infection, for example, or extra red blood cells for low oxygen levels at high altitudes. Even in emergencies, however, the body keeps to a long-term plan: It maintains a reserve of undifferentiated stem cells for future needs and crises. A research team headed by Prof. Tsvee Lapidot of the Institute's immunology Department recently discovered a new type of bodyguard that protects stem cells from over-differentiation. In a paper that appeared in Nature Immunology, they revealed how this rare, previously unknown sub-group of activated immune cells keeps the stem cells in the bone marrow "forever young." Blood forming stem cells live in comfort in the bone marrow, surrounded by an entourage of support cells that cater to their needs and direct their development the mesenchymal cells. But the research team, which included postdoctoral fellow Dr. Aya Ludin, Prof. Steffen Jung … Continue reading

2009 Benjamin A.Alman, MD - Identifying the Desmoid Initiating Cell. 2009 Update - A small portion of stem cells in a given tissue give rise to all of the cells that make up that tissue. These cells help regenerate and maintain the tissue over its lifespan. These stem cells have been identified in a variety of tumor types and are called tumor initiating cells (TIC). These investigators will be testing the hypothesis that desmoid tumors contain a subpopulation of TIC and that desmoid tumors are derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) that have a mutation leading to elevated levels of beta catenin, a protein thought to be instrumental in the development of familial adenomatous polyposis along with a mutation in the APC gene. In familial cases, desmoid tumors are associated with an APC mutation. Preliminary data suggest that desmoid tumors may be derived from MSC's in which beta catenin signaling is misregulated. Dr. Alman and his team currently have 22 desmoid tumor cell lines with which to work. They will be (1) attempting to identify cell lines of TICs in desmoid tumors using established surface markers, and (2) using mice to determine if the tumors arise from misregulated MSC … Continue reading

Protandim Scientific Review – Telomeres – Video

Protandim Scientific Review - Telomeres Protandim Scientific Review http://www.lifevantage.com The future of nutrition. Call Dr. Ed Noa at 707-718-2036. http://www.doctornoa.com Telomere testing - SpectraCell http At the ends of your chromsomes are stretches if DNA called telomeres. Telomeres protect the genetic information, making it possibly for your body cells to replicated and hold onto the information. The best example for a telomeres is like a shoelace. At the end of the shoelace is the plastic tips. Those plastic like tips (telomeres) prevent the chromosome ends from falling apart and sticking together. If the chromosome falls apart or sticks together, then it can cause disease and early death. When the body cells divide, the telomeres get shorter. When they get too short the cell dies. Oxidative stress can also shorten the telomeres. Telomere dynamics in human mesenchymal stem cells after exposure to acute oxidative stress. DNA Repair (Amst). 2012 Sep 1;11(9):774-9.
