Conclusive evidence on role of circulating mesenchymal stem cells in organ injury

Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 21-Aug-2014 Contact: Kathryn Ryan kryan@liebertpub.com 914-740-2100 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News New Rochelle, NY, August 21, 2014--Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are present in virtually every type of human tissue and may help in organ regeneration after injury. But the theory that MSCs are released from the bone marrow into the blood stream following organ damage, and migrate to the site of injury, has long been debated. M.J. Hoogduijn and colleagues provide conclusive evidence to resolve the controversy over the mobilization and migration of MSCs in humans in a new study published in Stem Cells and Development, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The article is available on the Stem Cells and Development website. In "No Evidence for Circulating Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Patients with Organ Injury," Hoogduijn and coauthors from Erasmus University Medical Center (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), describe the results of studies to detect MSCs in the blood of healthy individuals, of patients with end-stage renal disease, of patients with end-stage liver disease, and of heart transplant patients with organ rejection. Whereas they did not find MSCs in the circulation of these individuals, they did report the presence of MSCs in the blood … Continue reading

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy Can Help Repair Damaged Joints Mesenchymal stem cell therapy can help repair damaged joints by encouraging the regeneration of healthy tissue. Dennis M. Lox, M.D., a board certified physician, performs this progressive, minimally invasive technique at his state-of-the-art clinic, Florida Spine and Sports Medicine Center. Dr. Lox is a leader in ground-breaking non-surgical pain treatment and has helped many patients find relief and recommence the activities they once enjoyed but were forced to give up due to joint pain. At his clinic, Dr. Lox has successfully treated athletes, weekend warriors, accident victims, and others, either initially for acute injuries, or later in life as the injured segment degenerates. Mesenchymal stem cell therapy does not involve the use of embryonic cells. Instead, the cells are extracted from the patients own bone marrow or fatty tissue during a short procedure performed in Dr. Loxs office. Immediately afterward, the cells are prepared and injected into the affected joint. Through this technique, the stem cells infiltrate the damaged joint and help restore its function by replacing the native cells lost through damage or disease, and also by inducing the remaining healthy cells to replicate. Stem cells have the extraordinary ability … Continue reading

Stem cell treatment holds hope for better stroke recovery

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2014

A new first-of-its kind pilot study has revealed that stem cell treatment can significantly improve recovery from stroke in humans. The therapy uses a type of cell called CD34+ cells, a set of stem cells in the bone marrow that give rise to blood cells and blood vessel lining cells. Rather than developing into brain cells themselves, the cells are thought to release chemicals that trigger the growth of new brain tissue and new blood vessels in the area damaged by stroke. The patients were treated within seven days of a severe stroke, in contrast to several other stem cell trials, most of which have treated patients after six months or later. The Imperial researchers believe early treatment might improve the chances of a better recovery. Dr Soma Banerjee, Consultant in Stroke Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said that the treatment appeared to be safe and that it's feasible to treat patients early when they might be more likely to benefit. However, it's too early to draw definitive conclusions about the effectiveness of the therapy and more tests to work out the best dose and timescale for treatment before starting larger trials, she further added. The study is … Continue reading

Stem cells show promise for stroke in pilot study

Posted: Published on August 8th, 2014

A stroke therapy using stem cells extracted from patients' bone marrow has shown promising results in the first trial of its kind in humans. Five patients received the treatment in a pilot study conducted by doctors at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and scientists at Imperial College London. The therapy was found to be safe, and all the patients showed improvements in clinical measures of disability. The findings are published in the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine. It is the first UK human trial of a stem cell treatment for acute stroke to be published. The therapy uses a type of cell called CD34+ cells, a set of stem cells in the bone marrow that give rise to blood cells and blood vessel lining cells. Previous research has shown that treatment using these cells can significantly improve recovery from stroke in animals. Rather than developing into brain cells themselves, the cells are thought to release chemicals that trigger the growth of new brain tissue and new blood vessels in the area damaged by stroke. The patients were treated within seven days of a severe stroke, in contrast to several other stem cell trials, most of which have treated patients after … Continue reading

(PRWEB UK) 7 August 2014 BioEden the specialist tooth stem cell bank stands by its pledge to make personalised stem cell therapy an affordable reality by launching Access Membership at just 5 per month. With stem cell therapy holding the promise of longer and better lives in the future, the cost and the ease of finding a stem cell match has been an issue, given that the cost of private stem cell banking requires an initial cash outlay of up to 4000. Not any more. BioEden the leading specialist tooth stem cell bank, has added Access Membership to parents finding themselves financially unable to bank their child's cells for future use. "It doesnt sit well with us that a parent could be unable to access what could be a life saving service for their child, for financial reasons," said Group CEO Mr Tony Veverka. Parents can access the stem cell banking service for just 5 per month, and can become a member of the plan as soon as the baby is born. To date the option for stem cell banking at birth has been umbilical cord blood banking, an invasive process which provides haemopoetic stem cell banking at a cost. … Continue reading

Stem cell beauty treatments? Be wary, experts say

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2014

Could stem cell injections help rejuvenate your face or body? Probably not, plastic surgery experts say, but ads for these types of bogus procedures abound on the Internet. "Stem cells offer tremendous potential, but the marketplace is saturated with unsubstantiated and sometimes fraudulent claims that may place patients at risk," a team led by Dr. Michael Longaker, of Stanford University Medical Center, wrote in a review published in the August issue ofPlastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The experts say consumers need to be wary of advertisements promoting the benefits of "minimally invasive, stem cell-based rejuvenation procedures." Claims for stem cell procedures for facelifts, breast augmentation and vaginal rejuvenation are not only unsubstantiated, but also risky, Longaker's team said. They note that, to date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved only one cosmetic stem cell procedure designed to treat fine facial wrinkles. And since that single procedure was approved, the product involved has been monitored extensively. Overall, cosmetic stem cell procedures have not undergone significant scientific scrutiny, the Stanford team said. The risks associated with stem cell and tissue processing have not been closely examined. The effects of aging on stem cells are also not well established, the researchers explained. … Continue reading

Protein ZEB1 promotes breast tumor resistance to radiation therapy

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 4-Aug-2014 Contact: Ron Gilmore rlgilmore1@mdanderson.org 713-745-1898 University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Twist, Snail, Slug. They may sound like words in a children's nursery rhyme, but they are actually the exotic names given to proteins that can generate cells with stem cell-like properties that have the ability to form diverse types of tissue. One protein with the even more out-there name of ZEB1 (zinc finger E-box binding homeobox 1), is now thought to keep breast cancer cells from being successfully treated with radiation therapy, according to a study at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Li Ma, Ph.D., an assistant professor of experimental radiation oncology at MD Anderson, reported in this month's issue of Nature Cell Biology that ZEB1 may actually be helping breast tumor cells repair DNA damage caused by radiation treatment by ramping up a first-line of defense known as DNA damage response pathway. "Radiation therapy causes cell death by inducing DNA ' breaks'," said Ma. "The rationale for treating tumors with radiation without damaging normal tissues is that, compared with normal cells, tumor cells are actively dividing and often have defects in DNA damage repair machinery." Tumor cells … Continue reading
