Mesenchymal stem cells: the 'other' bone marrow stem cells …

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2014

What can mesenchymal stem cells do? Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an example of tissue or 'adult' stem cells. They are multipotent, meaning they can produce more than one type of specialized cell of the body, but not all types. MSCs make the different specialized cells found in the skeletal tissues. For example, they can differentiate or specialize into cartilage cells (chondrocytes), bone cells (osteoblasts) and fat cells (adipocytes). These specialized cells each have their own characteristic shapes, structures and functions, and each belongs in a particular tissue. Some early research suggested that MSCs might also differentiate into many different types of cells that do not belong to the skeletal tissues, such as nerve cells, heart muscle cells, liver cells and endothelial cells, which form the inner layer of blood vessels. These results have not been confirmed to date. In some cases, it appears that the MSCs fused together with existing specialized cells, leading to false conclusions about the ability of MSCs to produce certain cell types. In other cases, the results were an artificial effect caused by chemicals used to grow the cells in the lab. Mesenchymal stem cell differentiation: MSCs can make fat, cartilage and bone cells. They … Continue reading

Controversial Stem Cell Company Moves Treatment out of U.S.

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2014

Celltex Therapeutics of Houston ceased treatment patients in the U.S. last year after a warning from regulators, and will now send patients for treatments to Mexico Flickr/GE Healthcare US citizens who had pinned their hopes on a company being able to offer stem-cell treatments close to home will now need to travel a little farther. Celltex Therapeutics of Houston, Texas, stopped treating patients in the United States last year following a warning from regulators. A 25 January e-mail to Celltex customers indicates that the firm will now follow in the footsteps of many other companies offering unproven stem-cell therapies and send its patients abroad for treatment but only to Mexico. The stem-cell treatments offered by Celltex involved extracting adult stem cells from a patient, culturing them and then reinjecting them in a bid to replenish damaged tissue. It had been offering the treatment for more than a year with one of its high-profile customers being Texas governor, Rick Perry when the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) wrote to the company on 24 September 2012 advising it that the stem cells it harvested and grew were more than minimally manipulated during Celltex's procedures. As such, the FDA regarded the cells … Continue reading

Ears and noses could be grown in lab

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2014

Then they fashion the shape of a nose or an ear by hand, before placing this 'scaffold under the skin of a patient. However, using the new technique, doctors would simply be able to 'grow a new ear or nose from scratch that would ultimately be biologically indistinguishable from the real thing. To achieve the breakthrough, researchers took stem cells from a childs abdominal fat and then combined them with a polymer 'nano-scaffold almost a microscopic netting. They then managed to manipulate this composite in a laboratory so that human cartilage tissue grew into the tiny holes within the polymer. The technique could now be used to help treat a number of conditions. For patients with 'microtia for example, the stem cells that make the cartilage tissue could be placed in a mould so that it grew into the shape of an ear. This 'cartilage ear frame would then be inserted under a flap of skin on a patients head which would mould around the shape. When a biodegradable polymer scaffold is used, it would dissolve over time, leaving only human cartilage present. Although it would not help with other functions, such as hearing, the ear would be biologically indistinguishable … Continue reading

Researchers hope to grow human ears from fat tissue

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2014

Researchers at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital aim to grow a human ear via stem cells taken from a patient's fat tissue. Relatively little attention has been given to the reconstruction of damaged cartilage around the cranial area, however the new method is hoped to modernize this area of reconstructive surgery. Currently to repair damaged or non-existent cartilage in the ear, an operation is usually carried out when the patient is a child. Cartilage is extracted from the patient's ribs and painstakingly crafted into the form of an ear, before being grafted back onto the individual. Whilst this method of reconstruction achieves good results, it also has some unpleasant side effects. The patient is left with a permanent defect around the area from where the cells were harvested, as the cartilage between the ribs does not regenerate. Since any operation to replace the cartilage in the ear is for cosmetic purposes only, curing one defect by creating another (albeit in a less obvious place) is not an optimal solution. The cartilage cells used in the new technique are engineered from mesenchymal stem cells, extracted from the child's abdominal adipose tissue (fat). The benefit of this new system is that unlike … Continue reading

Horses set to gain health benefits from stem cell advance

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2014

12 hours ago Horses suffering from neurological conditions similar to those that affect humans could be helped by a breakthrough from stem cell scientists. Researchers who are the first to create working nerve cells from horse stem cells say the advance may pave the way for cell therapies that target conditions similar to motor neurone disease. The research could also benefit horses affected by grass sickness, a neurological condition that affects around 600 horses a year in the UK. Little is known about the disease, which causes nerve damage throughout the body. It is untreatable and animals with the most severe form usually die or have to be put down. The advance by the University of Edinburgh's Roslin Institute will provide a powerful tool for those studying horse diseases. It will also help scientists to test new drugs and treatments. The researchers took skin cells from a young horse and turned them into stem cells using a technique that was originally developed for human cells. The reprogrammed cells are pluripotent, which means they can be induced to become any type of cell in the body. The team used them to create nerve cells in the laboratory and tested whether they … Continue reading

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation in the Treatment of …

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2014

Summary Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) have been shown to have immunosuppressive and repairing properties. the investigators will infuse expanded MSC into patients who develop Chronic Allograft Nephropathy. The purpose of this study is to find out MSC is more effective in preventing organ rejection and maintaining kidney function. Kidney transplantation is a common procedure in hospitals, but organ rejection and chronic nephrotoxicity are potential problems for the patient. Approximately ninety percent of the protocol biopsies of renal allografts, performed at 18 months post transplantation, show histological lesions of chronic calcineurin nephrotoxicity. Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) has been shown to have immunosuppressive and repairing properties. Some patient in this study will also receive two infusions of expanded MSC. This study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of MSC infusions in patients . This study will last 2 years. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the full immunosuppressive therapy and MSC infusions (Group 1) or immunosuppressive therapy alone (Group 2). Patients will undergo MSC infusions at the start of the study on Day 0. One year post- infusions, patients will be evaluated. At Months 12 participants will undergo kidney biopsies. Blood collection will occur at regular intervals, Serum creatinine and … Continue reading
