GeneCell International, Miami’s Preferred Cord Blood Laboratory, Participates in South Florida's Parenting Baby Fair …
Posted: Published on June 29th, 2013
Miami, Florida (PRWEB) June 28, 2013 The South Florida Parenting Baby Fair will provide GeneCell the opportunity to offer South Floridian families additional information regarding cord blood banking education as well as options available to them. The event is set to take place Saturday, June 29, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pavilion Grille, at 301 Yamato Road, in Boca Raton, Florida. What a great opportunity to further educate exacting parents on the importance of cord blood banking, and to explain the differences between the noncontroversial stem cells is definitely rewarding, said GeneCells Physician Relations Manager, Lisa Lorraine Reyes Muoz. GeneCell anticipates to create further cord blood awareness by educating expecting parents on what is cord blood stem cells, why bank them, the current treatable diseases and future potentials. GeneCell also expects to present other services from its stem cell portfolio, including cord tissue, dental pulp and adipose tissue stem cells. GeneCell International specializes in the collection, transport, processing and cryogenic storage of adult stem cells from various sources including; umbilical cord blood, dental pulp and adipose tissue (fat) that can later be used to treat a variety of diseases. The laboratory is also involved in scientific … Continue reading

Study links cardiac hormone-related inflammatory pathway with tumor growth
Posted: Published on June 29th, 2013
June 28, 2013 A cardiac hormone signaling receptor abundantly expressed both in inflamed tissues and cancers appears to recruit stem cells that form the blood vessels needed to feed tumor growth, reports a new study by scientists at the University of South Florida Nanomedicine Research Center. The research may lead to the development of new drugs or delivery systems to treat cancer by blocking this receptor, known as natriuretic peptide receptor A (NPRA). The findings appeared online recently in the journal Stem Cells. "Our results show that NRPA signaling by cancer cells produces some molecular factors that attract stem cells, which in turn form blood vessels that provide oxygen and nutrients to the tumor," said the study's principal investigator Subhra Mohapatra, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine. "We showed that if the NPRA signal is blocked, so is the angiogenesis and, if the tumor's blood supply is cut off it will die." Using both cultured cells and a mouse model, Dr. Mohapatra and her team modeled interactions to study the association between gene mutations and exposure to an inflammatory tissue microenvironment. The researchers demonstrated that cardiac hormone NRPA played a key role in the link between inflammation … Continue reading

Mesoblast Receives Clearance to Begin Phase 2 Clinical Trial of Mesenchymal Precursor Cells in Diabetic Nephropathy
Posted: Published on June 27th, 2013
NEW YORK, N.Y., June 25, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Key Points: Mesoblast has received ethics approvals to begin a clinical trial of its proprietary allogeneic, or "off-the-shelf", adult Mesenchymal Precursor Cells (MPCs) in people with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes . Trial is a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled dose escalation study to evaluate the safety, tolerability and effectiveness of a single intravenous infusion of MPCs over an initial period of three months in patients with Stage 3b or 4 diabetic nephropathy . Mechanisms of action, based on preclinical studies, may include immunomodulation and reduction of kidney inflammation, reversal of abnormal kidney blood flow, and repair/regeneration of kidney tissue . Mesoblast's intravenous product is currently being evaluated in a range of inflammatory/immunologic conditions where the immunomodulatory properties of MPCs may provide substantial benefits, including diabetic nephropathy, early type 2 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. Melbourne, Australia; 26 June 2013 and New York, USA; 25 June 2013: Regenerative medicine company Mesoblast Limited (ASX:MSB; USOTC:MBLTY) today announced that it has received approvals from Australian ethics committees to commence a Phase 2 trial evaluating a single intravenous infusion of its proprietary allogeneic or "off-the-shelf" adult Mesenchymal Precursor Cells (MPCs) in patients with type 2 … Continue reading

18. Saving baby's cord cells for the future
Posted: Published on June 21st, 2013
Cord blood banking is becoming popular among Malaysian parents but is it really necessary? IT was during one of her routine check-ups, while pregnant with her first child, that Amy Lim (not her real name) noticed the banners promoting umbilical cord blood (UCB) banking. My husband and I got curious, so we called up the company to inquire about the services offered. We wanted to know the benefits of storing our baby's cord blood, and whether the stem cells (from the blood) would still be viable years down the road, says 38-year-old Lim, a senior finance manager. Satisfied with the answers they received, Lim and her husband decided to sign up for a package to privately store their daughter's cord blood. That was seven years ago. When her second daughter arrived four years ago, Lim decided it was not necessary to repeat the process. The cord blood can be used for siblings as well, so we didn't think it was necessary to store for both but we're glad we did it with our first child because we believe it would benefit our children. With medical advancements, should they need it in future, at least we have it you know, just … Continue reading
