Stem Cells Show Promise in Extending Transplanted Kidneys’ Survival Time
Posted: Published on February 8th, 2013
Can stem cells provide an answer to the perplexing question of how to ensure long-term survival of transplanted kidneys? The results of a new Phase 1 clinical trial say maybe so. Details of the trial, conducted by researchers at Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands, are published in the current issue of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine. Durham, NC (PRWEB) February 07, 2013 The LUMC team, led by Marlies E.J. Reinders, M.D, Ph.D., and Ton J. Rabelink, M.D., Ph.D., decided to test whether stem cells might keep fibrosis in check. They focused on mesenchymal stromal cells, a type of stem cell found throughout the body, including in bone marrow. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an interesting candidate due to their immunosuppressive and regenerative properties, Dr. Reinders explained. Of importance, no clinical studies have investigated their effects on rejection and fibrosis in organ transplantation. The team performed a safety and feasibility study in kidney transplant patients who, at four weeks or six months after transplant, were showing signs of rejection and/or an increase in fibrosis and wasting away of the kidneys tubes (a condition called interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy. . In all, six patients received two intravenous MSC infusions of 1 million cells, … Continue reading

One day 2 of Bangalore India Bio (BIB) Indias premier Biotech Show organised by the department of Information Technology, Bio-Technology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka and the Vision Group on Biotechnology, featured another TRACK ON REGENERATIVE MEDICINE, the topic was THE PROMISES AND CHALLENGES OF REGENERATIVE MEDICINE. The session was Chaired by B.N. Manohar Chief Executive Officer, Stempeutics Research Pvt. Ltd. and the Speakers were Prof. Ravi Bellamkonda Associate Vice President for Research, Carol Ann and David D. Flanagan Chair in Biomedical Engineering & GCC Distinguished Scholar, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, Dr. N.K. Venkataramana - Director of Advanced Neuro-Science Institute and Vice-Chairman of BGS-Global Hospitals and Dr. Suresh Babu - Application Scientist, Life Science Centre (R&D), Agilent Technologies. Opening the session B.N. Manohar, said, Today regenerative medicine, stem cells, neurology have tremendous potential. Bio Pharma can change the present US$5bn to US$100billion by 2025. Globally US$150bn revenue is made by Biotechnology industries in which 15% is from Pharma industries. In which India contributes 10% to pharma revenue. Stem cells will become a major benchmark for medical treatment. They can be utilized in many ways, which will be shared by the Panel. Prof. Ravi Bellamkonda, said, the concept … Continue reading

£6.5M in funding to help manufacture the drugs of the future
Posted: Published on February 6th, 2013
Public release date: 5-Feb-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Chris Melvin press.office@bbsrc.ac.uk 44-179-341-4694 Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council More than 6M of funding has been awarded to enhance the development of biopharmaceuticals. In total 6.5M will fund 12 projects to deliver commercially important results, such as industrial-scale production of antibodies, stem cell preservation at room temperature, biopharmaceutical production using microbes and commercial scale stem cell therapy. The funding is the second round of awards from Phase 2 of the Bioprocessing Research Industry Club (BRIC), a partnership between the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), a consortium of leading companies and HealthTech and Medicines Knowledge Transfer Network. Bioprocessing is the use of living cells or their components (e.g. enzymes) to manufacture desirable products. The innovative projects will investigate new tools and methods for bioprocessing which will be of particular benefit to the biopharmaceutical sector, where developing new drugs is often slow, expensive and complicated. The UK biopharmaceutical sector comprises over 250 companies and it is forecast that, by 2016, eight of the top ten 'blockbuster' medicines will be biologics rather than conventional small molecules. The sector is of huge … Continue reading

TB hides in bone marrow, resurfaces long afterwards
Posted: Published on February 5th, 2013
London, Feb 4 (IANS) Scientists now know the reason why tuberculosis resurfaces years or decades after initial therapy. The bugs can hide in the patients' bone marrow, safe from the action of drugs, says a new finding. Stanford University researchers have discovered that the disease is capable of "infiltrating" cells in the bone marrow, where it finds "protection" from treatment. The cells have qualities like a natural resistance to drugs, infrequent division and a privileged immune status which could allow them to survive various types of treatment, the scientists explained, the journal Science Translational Medicine reports. The researchers reported that they had found active TB bacteria in the cells of human patients who had been treated for the disease, according to the Telegraph. Possibly a host of other infectious diseases may use a similar "wolf-in-stem-cell-clothing" tactic to hide away from therapies, they suggested, although any new treatments will take many years to develop. Traces of the bacteria were identified in mesenchymal stem cells, which can produce specialised cell types including bone, fat and cartilage. Although the stem cells are typically found in the bone marrow, they are also capable of moving to the lungs - the ideal environment for TB … Continue reading

Lady Receives Stemlogix Stem Cell Therapy Lady received Stemlogix stem cell therapy to help with her severe arthritis in her hips! Watch Dr. Whalen, of LePar Animal Hospital in Evergreen Park, perform surgery and Stem Cell Therapy on Lady Bender, a 5 year old Mastiff with severe arthritis in the hips. Dr. Whalen has been treating her for severe arthritis since June of 2011. Lady's condition was acute as she was not able to get up on her own. Lady was also overweight and gradually lost 20 lbs under Dr. Whalen's care. The video also shows the process for Stem Cell Therapy, the collection and re-injection phase. Stem cells are harvested using the dog's own fat tissue, then processed in-hospital and then re-injected into the joints that need it most. Concurrently to the Stem Cell treatment, Lady also undergoes cruciate ligament repair. Dr. Whalen is the first veterinarian in Illinois to perform stem cell therapy in-house. A bit of history about stem cells – Video
Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2013
A bit of history about stem cells http://www.stemcellsarthritistreatment.com Early work by Friedenstein and associates provided intriguing information on the potential for bone marrow to differentiate into stem cells. They cultured bone marrow cells and removed cells that didn't appear to adhere to each other. After further culture, they found that the most adherent cells were spindle shaped and resembled deposits of cartilage and bone. Other groups confirmed the findings and they found that these cells were multipotent and could differentiate into bone cells, cartilage cells, fat cells, and muscle cells. The name they gave to these multipotent cells was "mesenchymal stem cells." http By: Nathan Wei … Continue reading
