Conned out of $22,000 by FB 'lover'
Posted: Published on November 10th, 2014
Not only was her dream to marry the man she loved crushed, but all of Ms Suzannie's (not her real name) savings vanished as well, leaving her in debt by as much as $19,000. All this because the 44-year-old single mother of three fell for the sweet nothings of her Facebook "lover". Ms Suzannie trusted her "lover", who called himself Troy Williams, so much that she gave money and gifts totalling $22,000, of which $3,000 was from her savings, while the rest of the amount was borrowed. Her "lover" then vanished suddenly, leaving the photocopy-machine operator to bear the consequences. According to Ms Suzannie, her misfortune began when Williams asked to be her friend on Facebook in April, claiming to be a United States soldier aged 42. They started to chat often on Facebook, and he frequently lavished her with love poems and called her "wife". A month after that, Williams began asking Ms Suzannie for money on the pretence that he needed to undergo treatment at a hospital in India after injuries sustained during his deployment in Syria. "Each time I said I didn't have money, he asked me to borrow from my friend. "I wanted to help him … Continue reading

Molecular discovery could pave way for MS cure People suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) may have found a new reason to hope thanks to the discovery of a new molecule which may be the key to creating a drug that can cure the debilitating disease. Dr. Ana Martinez, research professor at the Spanish National Council for Research (CSIC) and chief scientific officer of Ankar Pharma, a Spanish-Filipino Biotech company specializing in neurodegenerative diseases was recently in the country to share more of the good news. Ankar Pharma major shareholders (from left) Jose Maria Olbes,Dr. Carmen Gil, and Dr. Ana Martinez. It is a first-in-class small molecule with a dual innovative mechanism of action and high activity in preclinical models. It has shown high activity in all key components associated to MS. It is able to decrease the clinical symptoms, it reduces inflammation, and it increases neuroprotection and remyelinazation, says Dr. Martinez who is quite known in her field for several successful molecule discoveries in the area of neurological diseases some of which have been patented and are being developed by several pharmaceutical companies. According to Dr. Martinez, MS is one of the worlds most common neurological disorders. In many countries, … Continue reading

Former NDP staffer files lawsuit against MP over treatment at work
Posted: Published on November 8th, 2014
A former Parliament Hill staffer is suing her one-time boss, accusing the NDP MP of acting in a tyrannical way in refusing to deal with harassment allegations under his watch and saying the party offered her a new job in exchange for dropping her grievance. In what is the third high-profile harassment case in federal politics in the past week, a statement of claim was filed in Ontario Superior Court Friday by Fabiola Ferro, a 34-year-old former parliamentary assistant, against Sylvain Chicoine, 44, a Quebec NDP MP first elected in 2011. The lawsuit claims damages of $194,000. However, Mr. Chicoine and NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair each said the allegations have already been found by an internal review to be baseless, a decision Ms. Ferro did not appeal. Her lawsuit nonetheless comes two days after Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau suspended two of his MPs from caucus, saying theyd been accused of personal misconduct others have since called it harassment against two NDP MPs. How those cases will proceed, however, remained unclear Friday. Ms. Ferros lawsuit says she began working for Mr. Chicoine in September, 2011. She alleges that within a few months, she began to face harassment from another employee of … Continue reading

Dr. J. Michael Robertson Announces He Now Offers Dental Implants to Oxford, MS Residents
Posted: Published on November 7th, 2014
Oxford, MS (PRWEB) November 06, 2014 Those with missing teeth in Oxford, MS can now receive treatment from Dr. J. Michael Robertson, a skilled periodontist in the area, as he is currently accepting new patients. Patients from Oxford are now able to benefit from Dr. Robertsons extensive experience in placing dental implants. Implants have been used for decades with high success rates and have long been among the most highly preferred tooth-replacement treatment options. With good oral hygiene habits, patients can keep their implants for decades and not have to worry about replacing them after only a few short years. Dental implants are made of three sections that come together to create the tooth replacement. The root of the structure is made of surgical quality titanium. This is a special metal that the body binds to in a process known as osseointegration. After the titanium implant is placed, an abutment is used to connect the implant to the crown. The crown is made to look and function like a regular tooth. Patients with multiple missing teeth in Oxford, MS can have success with other traditional tooth replacement options, but they commonly cause complications. Conventional appliances are not as comfortable, reliable … Continue reading

WA toad dog's treatment 'appalling'
Posted: Published on November 5th, 2014
Cane toad detection dog Reggie is being mistreated, his former handler claims. The sniffer dog sent to the Kimberley region to fight cane toads invading Western Australia has been mistreated, according to both the president of Kimberley Toad Busters and the animal's former handler. The president of the community group, Lee Scott-Virtue,also said the state government had squandered funds and misled the community in its failed attempt to stop the pests heading further south. Cane toad poison affects the nervous system. But the government has denied the accusations, saying the conditions in which the dog was being kept met all requirements. Advertisement Ms Scott-Virtue is worried about the health of Reggie the sniffer dog, sent to the state's north to fight the poisonous amphibians earlier this year. "The treatment of Reggie has been absolutely appalling," she said "The previous handler has reported abuse and concern. "She is terribly upset." Pharmac drug decision pleases patient
Posted: Published on November 5th, 2014
Multiple sclerosis patient Nicole Pybus no longer feels worthless, after news that two new MS drugs will be publicly funded. Government buying-arm Pharmac has announced it will fund the treatments for patients with the most common form of MS - relapsing remitting. Drugs Tysabri and Gilenya are used to delay the progression of physical disability and reduce the frequency of a relapse. It follows a fight by the Multiple Sclerosis Society of New Zealand and neurologists for the drugs to be publicly funded. Pybus, 32, from Blenheim, has relapsing remitting MS and is eligible for Gilenya. Previously, the drugs cost a patient a year's salary - typically between $26,000 and $70,000, Pybus said. "It was ridiculous to be sent to a doctor's office and told if you are not on this medication, you won't survive beyond 20 years and it won't be a good 20 years." In March, Hurricanes rugby player Tim Bateman said he and his young family would move to Japan so his wife Laura could access MS treatment not available in New Zealand. "It was a ridiculous fight," Pybus said. "This drug should have been available publicly years ago, like the rest of the world. In the … Continue reading

Multiple Sclerosis Society believes cholesterol-busting statins could help Disease affects the nerves in the brain, eyes and spinal cord Drug not given to MS sufferers because laws prevent medicines being re-licensed By Emily Kent Smith for Daily Mail Published: 20:59 EST, 3 November 2014 | Updated: 04:22 EST, 4 November 2014 Statins could be used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS) but are being blocked by NHS red tape, a charity has claimed. The Multiple Sclerosis Society believes cholesterol-busting statins could help treat MS but are not prescribed because of strict NHS rules that prevent drugs being re-licensed for conditions other than that for which they were originally designed. The disease affects nerves in the brain, eyes and spinal cord, often causing patients to lose basic bodily functions. The Multiple Sclerosis Society believes cholesterol-busting statins could help treat MS Initial trials conducted show that simvastatin, a drug traditionally prescribed to those suffering from heart disease, could slow the breakdown of the tissues in the brain by 40 per cent. But the drug is not being given to MS sufferers because of laws which prevent old drugs being re-licensed. The patent for simvastatin expired in 2004 and a new licence would be … Continue reading

What is Multiple Sclerosis? Life Expectancy, Symptoms …
Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2014
Researchers believe that MS causes the body's immune system to attack myelin, which is an insulating coating around nerve cells. When myelin erodes, communication between nerve cells in the central nervous system is disrupted. When this happens, some parts of the body do not receive instructions from the central nervous system, which controls everything the body does. The disease can cause varying symptoms that appear with a wide range of severity, from mild discomfort to complete disability. Learn the typical progression of MS and what to expect Multiple sclerosis may appear in several forms. The types of MS include: Relapsing-remitting: This form of multiple sclerosis comes and goes over time. Symptoms can be severe for a time but then disappear. About 85 percent of multiple sclerosis patients develop onset of the disease in this manner (Murray, T., et al., 2013). Secondary-progressive: After the initial attack, the disease may begin to progress in a more deliberate way. In this type of MS, symptoms do not subside. Before new therapies were created, about 50 percent of people with multiple sclerosis entered a progressive stage. However, the effectiveness of the new therapies has not been fully evaluated (Murray T., et al, 2013). Primary-progressive: … Continue reading
