Lecture to provide update on MS treatments
Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2014
By Simmons, Garrett on November 2, 2014. LETHBRIDGE HERALD One of the more difficult challenges in researching new treatments for people living with multiple sclerosis has been the discovery of treatments for progressive forms of MS. Over the past 15-20 years, several new treatments have been made available for the most common form of the disease relapsing-remitting but people living with progressive MS remain without any drug treatment options to help improve their quality of life. The MS Society of Canada is committed to changing that, and those interested in learning about research in progressive MS can attend a public lecture entitled, Update on Treatment Trials in Progressive MS. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Marcus Koch, MD, PhD, neurologist from the University of Calgary MS program. The event is presented by the Lethbridge and District Chapter of the MS Society of Canada. It will take place on Thursday at the Lethbridge Public Library, Theatre Gallery Room, from 7-8:30 p.m. You must be logged in to post a comment. Tribunal finds Tesco Ireland unfairly dismissed lung cancer victim
Posted: Published on November 1st, 2014
The Employment Appeals Tribunal found that Tescos disciplinary procedures were flawed to the extent that Ms Adeniyi was prejudiced by them. Photograph: Dara Mac Dnaill The Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT) has found that the Irish arm of supermarket giant Tesco unfairly dismissed a lung cancer victim. Mary Adeniyi had worked with Tesco since 2004, but fell ill in October 2010 and three months later was diagnosed with lung cancer. A supervisor with the retailer, Ms Adeniyi was on sick leave due to the cancer treatment, but told the hearing that she always intended to return to work and was shocked when she was dismissed. Ms Adeniyi attended a welfare meeting with her then Tesco store manager in July 2011 and informed her of her illness and further treatments which required her to travel to the UK. After receiving a letter from Tesco in March 2011, Ms Adeniyi telephoned the personnel manager and explained that she was too weak to attend meetings at that time. Ms Adeniyi had provided an initial letter from her hospital, which she believed clearly set out her medical condition. In July 2012, Tesco dismissed Ms Adeniyi by letter after claiming that she did not keep the … Continue reading

Finally funded: MS drugs within reach
Posted: Published on November 1st, 2014
For 17-year-old Briony Mathieson having MS has become a little less scary with the news that two new treatments will be publicly funded. The country's drug-buying agency, Pharmac, is from today funding Biogen Idec's Natalizumab (trading as Tysabri) and Novartis' Fingolimod (Gilenya) to treat the symptoms of the disorder. The decision would bring relief to hundreds of MS sufferers around the country with an annual cost in the "tens of millions of dollars per year", a Pharmac spokesman said. About 20 MS patients had been forking out the estimated $3000 to $5000 a month for the drugs, MSNZ vice president Neil Woodhams said. Mathieson's neurologist Dr Debbie Mason made a special funding request for Natalizumab on the teenager's behalf after two existing medications failed to address her symptoms. She was knocked back and Mathieson has been left floundering without treatment since April. A fall at the age of 14 left her with numb legs and a cold sensation in her feet, which continued over a weekend. She stayed in hospital while numerous tests were done and steroids administered. Three days later, she was told she had MS. "I'd seen it on [TV show] Shortland Street so that's where I'd heard … Continue reading

Ms. Marvel's Long, Degrading, Triumphant Road To Stardom
Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014
It's a big day for diversity in comic book adaptations: Marvel Studios announced that that African asskicker Black Panther would get his own film in 2017 and Ms. Marvel would get her own film in 2018. They will be the the first Marvel films led by an African-American and a woman, respectively. Fans have been demanding more diversity for a while. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige told Fast Company that Black Panther is the character he gets asked about "more than anything else. As for Ms. Marvel, her story--best explained in Sean Howe's fantastic Marvel Comics: The Untold Story--is a thoroughly demeaning road to success reminiscent of the worst stuff you've seen Peggy and Joan put up with on Mad Men. She was objectified from the beginning. In 1969, when the creators were showing Marvel mastermind Stan Lee designs for their new heroine's costume, his input was, "This is what I'm after ... tits and ass." It got better for Ms. Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, for a while. After her wardrobe was picked out, Danvers's character was treated respectfully by Marvel writers in the 1970s. She fought along the X-Men and The Avengers and grew into a fully realized character … Continue reading

Quarantined Nurse Leaves New Jersey for Maine
Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014
Fort Kent, Maine: A nurse who worked in West Africa with Ebola patients and was quarantined at a New Jersey hospital over the weekend was returning home to Maine on Monday as her lawyer criticized the state's policies that had her fighting to be released from an isolation tent. Health officials said on Saturday that nurse Kaci Hickox tested negative for Ebola. Ms Hickox left a hospital on Monday afternoon, to be taken to Maine, where she lives. Ms Hickox called her treatment "inhumane" and "completely unacceptable" after she became the first person forced into New Jersey's mandatory quarantine, announced on Friday by Governor Chris Christie for people arriving at Newark Liberty International Airport from three West African countries. Prominent New York civil rights attorney Norman Siegel, hired by Ms Hickox while she was quarantined, said he has not ruled out legal action. "We are pleased that the state of New Jersey has decided to release Kaci. They had no justification to confine her," Mr Siegel said. "We are figuring out how to amplify Kaci's voice on this issue. We have to figure out if that is through the courts of law or through the court of public opinion." Ms … Continue reading
