MS patients to pay up to 400 for crucial drug

Posted: Published on July 1st, 2014

Although Fampridine, known commercially as Fampyra, is not covered by Health Service Executive-funded drug schemes, it has been provided free to patients for the past 2 years under a clinical trial by the manufacturer, Biogen. Photograph: Biogen Multiple sclerosis patients will have to pay up to 400 per month from today for a drug to improve mobility which was previously provided free of charge. Although Fampridine, known commercially as Fampyra, is not covered by Health Service Executive-funded drug schemes, it has been provided free to patients for the past 2 years under a clinical trial by the manufacturer, Biogen. The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland has estimated that the cost of Fampyra, which treats the symptoms of walking impairment in MS sufferers, will be between 225 and 400 per month for each patient. This ongoing cost would be prohibitive for many people with MS who have been receiving the treatment for free up to this point, MS Ireland chief executive Ava Battles said. MS Ireland is calling on the HSE to make Fampyra available to the estimated 8,000 people with MS in Ireland through one of its drugs payment schemes. The drug has not been covered up to now because … Continue reading

Marie Flemings partner welcomes MS cannabis plan

Posted: Published on June 30th, 2014

PLEASED: Tom said he hopes a cannabis-based product will be available to people with MS soon THE partner of a right-to-die campaigner says moves to legalise cannabis treatment for MS sufferers will go a long way to improve their quality of life. Tom Curran, who has been outspoken in the past on the pain-relieving effect that cannabis had on his late partner Marie Fleming, said he is delighted the State is to legalise medicinal cannabis next month. During Maries long battle with multiple sclerosis, Tom grew cannabis to help her with her pain. He said not only did it help with her symptoms, but it also helped to counter some of the side effects of MS. Next month, Junior Health Minister Alex White will sign a ministerial order allowing the Irish Medicines Board and the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics (NCPE) to assess the likely costs and how the medicine might be promoted. Hopefully, with the legal impediments removed, a cannabis-based medicinal product can soon be available to ease the symptoms of spasticity for people with MS, where other conservative treatments have failed, Minister White said. Sativex, an oral spray made by GW Pharmaceuticals, is credited with treating muscle spasticity in … Continue reading

Treatment plants voluntarily test for microcystin

Posted: Published on June 30th, 2014

Published: Monday, 6/30/2014 - Updated: 10 seconds ago LAKE ERIE ALGAE BLOOMS BY STEPHEN GRUBER-MILLER BLADE STAFF WRITER Lake Eries annual algae blooms can carry harmful toxins into public drinking water treatment plants, but facilities arent specifically required to test for the toxins. To combat the toxins, many water treatment facilities along Lake Eries Western Basin, from Lorain, Ohio, to Monroe, are cooperating with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency by testing voluntarily for microcystin, a toxin in microcystis, the lakes most prevalent form of harmful blue-green algae. Algal blooms are a result of high levels of phosphorous in the water attributed to runoff from agricultural fertilizer, manure, sewage overflows, and septic systems. The toxin can cause breathing problems, skin reactions, and liver damage, and large enough quantities can even be deadly. State code requires that public drinking water systems plan for at least 10 of the most likely emergencies and provide descriptions of response procedures and how to maintain service during those emergencies. But many plants do not list algal toxins among those common emergencies. They get to choose what emergencies to plan for, Dina Pierce, an Ohio EPA spokesman, said to explain why some plants have algae plans in … Continue reading

Dr. J. Michael Robertson Expands His Practice to Bring Gum Disease Treatment to Oxford, MS Residents

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2014

Oxford, MS (PRWEB) June 27, 2014 Dr. J. Michael Robertson is pleased to announce that his practice is currently expanding to bring the LANAP laser protocol, a revolutionary gum disease treatment, to Oxford patients. LANAP treatment is a safe, effective gum surgery alternative that has the ability to selectively target and remove infection that results from moderate to severe cases of periodontal disease. The procedure results in little to no gum recession, a common side effect of other treatment options. Periodontal disease is caused by an infection between the teeth and gums. Unless local patients receive an effective gum disease treatment in Oxford, the illness can progress quickly, resulting in loose or lost teeth and jaw bone degeneration. Periodontal disease has also been linked to cancer, heart disease, preterm labor, and many other health problems. LANAP treatment is able to stop the progression of periodontal disease in one to two visits by utilizing this FDA cleared laser treatment available to northern Mississippi patients. Instead of cutting out the infected tissue, Dr. Robertson uses the PerioLase MVP-7 laser to clear away the diseased gum tissue and bacteria lining the periodontal pockets. The laser is safe to use in these applications due … Continue reading
