Biogen to reapply for HSE funding for multiple sclerosis drug

Posted: Published on June 24th, 2014

Minister of State for Primary Care Alex White: said Biogen had told the HSE it intended to submit a revised application to the NCPE. Photograph: Alan Betson/The Irish Times The makers of a drug that helps people with multiple sclerosis to walk are to make a fresh application to have it covered by the Health Service Executive-funded drug schemes. People with MS, who say Fampridine (known commercially as Fampyra) has greatly increased their mobility, have criticised the HSE for not reimbursing the cost of the drug on the long-term illness scheme. In 2012, regulatory authorities concluded that Fampyra was not demonstrably cost-effective for the treatment of MS. The HSE said the manufacturers, Biogen Idec, had failed to demonstrate or provide any formal justification of the prices proposed, but did not rule out a revised application. The National Centre for Pharmaco-economics (NCPE), which rules on the cost-effectiveness of new drugs, said Fampyra would cost nearly 7,000 a patient each year. It said the 20 million annual cost to the State over five years would take money from other areas. Biogen later made the drug available free of charge to some patients as part of a late-stage clinical trial. Since Fampyra was … Continue reading

Medical Physics Team at UNM Cancer Center Expands Treatment Choices

Posted: Published on June 21st, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Phoebe T. Ward, Jr. was the first patient to receive stereotactic radiosurgery at the University of New Mexico Cancer Center. The procedure killed the tumor in Ms. Wards brain by hitting it with x-rays. It took no more than 15 minutes but preparation for the procedure took months. Its a single treatment and theres no way to remove the radiation, says Eder Calderon. So we have physicists doing checks. We have the radiation therapists doing checks. We also include the radiation oncologist in some of those checks. Mr. Calderon is a medical physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UNM Cancer Center. He skillfully controls the ionizing radiation delivered to a person with cancer to noninvasively kill tumors, including brain tumors. He and the UNM Cancer Center medical physics team develop procedures to expand how they use the existing radiation equipment, giving people with cancer more options. Stereotactic radiosurgery is one of the new procedures theyve put in place; hippocampal-sparing radiation is another. Ms. Ward has received both. One precise dose Radiosurgery and radiation therapy kill cancer cells with radiation, but they require vastly different procedures. People receiving radiation therapy … Continue reading

Picture by Jon Mullis 25.014.013.cov.jm2 (www.buyphotos247.com) A SMALL group of people with multiple sclerosis got together back in 1984 to raise money to buy an oxygen chamber to provide treatment for themselves and others with the condition. Fast forward 30 years and from those humble beginnings in Warwick via a small industrial unit in Binley, what is now known as the Mercia MS Therapy Centre in Aldermans Green is open six days a week and is used by around 80 people every week. The popularity of the hyperbaric oxygen chamber among MS sufferers and children with cerebral palsy, and later children with autism and people recovering from strokes, and an lottery grant funded the move to the current home which is also open to the public, offering physiotherapy, acupuncture, yoga, reflexology, massage, osteomyology, foot healthcare, art classes and social events. Deputy Lord Mayor Michael Hammond and Lord Digby Jones were guests of honour on Saturday as the … Continue reading

Trial looks for new ways to treat progressive MS

Posted: Published on June 15th, 2014

CALGARY- Katie Gerke was just 24 when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I got off a stationary bike at the end of my workout, and my leg just gave out, Gerke recalls. At first her symptoms came and went, but like many patients with Relapsing Remitting MS, Gerkes disease progressed to a condition known as Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. With progressive MS, its a constant decline, so you dont really see that person getting better, you basically see that person gradually getting worse, Gerke explains from a wheelchair. She now lives in a long term care facility and is no longer able to use her arms and legs. According to Calgary MS researchers, there are few therapies available for patients with either primary or secondary progressive MS. We dont have a disease modifying treatment, so we dont have therapies that will slow down this progression, Dr. Marcus Koch explains. Koch hopes to help change that. The University of Calgary researcher is part of a multi-disciplinary team that plans to launch a new clinical trial involving progressive MS patients. The goal is to find out if drugs currently being used to treat other conditions like Parkinsons disease can be helpful … Continue reading

Danielle Letendre receives scholarship

Posted: Published on June 14th, 2014

Danielle Letendre of Shelton has been named to receive a National MS Society, Connecticut Chapters 2014 Hayleys Hope and Michaelas Miracle MS Memorial Fund Scholarship. Danielle will enroll in a six-year health science program at Springfield College this fall. In addition to a roster full of AP courses and a four-year term on Shelton High Schools student council parliamentarian executive board, she was also a four-year member and three-year varsity letterman on both indoor and outdoor track and field. It was through this passion for sports that Letendre discovered her dream of becoming a physical therapist. After suffering a severe sports injury, which left doctors thinking she would never reach full mobility in her ankle again, Danielle was introduced to the world of physical therapy. After two months of physical therapy, I achieved the unattainable: my ankle had full rotation and I could sprint, said Letendre. I was so intrigued that I went on to intern at the same facility where I received my treatment. I learned so much from my time there and I cant wait to be on the other end of the recovery process by guiding someone through their challenges to reach their goals. Danielles greatest inspiration … Continue reading

Tupelo, MS Periodontist, Dr. J. Michael Robertson Now Offers Treatment for Gum Disease Using the Laser-Based Procedure …

Posted: Published on June 8th, 2014

Tupelo, MS (PRWEB) June 06, 2014 Dr. J. Michael Robertson, a leading periodontist in Tupelo, MS, offers his patients new hope for tooth replacement with a variety of dental implant options. Dr. Robertson also offers an alternative laser gum disease treatment for patients in need of gum surgery. The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) effectively treats gum disease and has the potential to save natural teeth that otherwise may be lost. LANAP is a revolutionary gum disease treatment. Minimally invasive, it is performed in much less time than other surgical gum treatments. Using a laser that targets bacteria and diseased tissue, Dr. Robertson can often complete treatment in one visit and most patients are back to work immediately. With the laser surgery patients usually experience less pain, less bleeding and less gum recession than with traditional gum surgery. Implants are generally recognized as the most desirable replacement for teeth and are widely preferred over traditional bridges and dentures. Dr. Robertson surgically places implants into the jaw bone for a secure tooth replacement as opposed to removable appliances that can slip and click. Fixed bridges can also create stress on the natural teeth they depend upon for structural support. Implants … Continue reading

New treatment for MS is approved for use on NHS

Posted: Published on June 6th, 2014

New treatment for MS is approved for use on NHS 10:00pm Thursday 5th June 2014 in News MULTIPLE sclerosis sufferers have been given a boost after a new treatment developed by an Oxford firm was approved to be available on the NHS. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) has sanctioned the use of Genzymes Lemtrada therapy to treat active relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), which accounts for 85 per cent of initial diagnoses of the disease. Brendan Martin, general manager for Genzyme UK and Ireland based at the Oxford Business Park, said: This final milestone brings a treatment option to people with MS that could really reshape the management of their condition. We are also immensely proud of our association with Lemtrada as a home-grown product, developed by a team of UK scientists. About 100,000 people in the UK have MS and about 2,500 people are diagnosed with it each year. Lemtrada is an antibody therapy which targets CD52, a protein thought to be responsible for the inflammatory process in MS. The treatment is the second of Genzymes treatments for MS to receive approval for NHS use. Our top stories: See the rest here: New treatment for … Continue reading
