Happy, healthy holidays for Mary Buie on her path to recovery
Posted: Published on December 23rd, 2013
EDITORS NOTEThis is the fifteenth story in an ongoing series that is following Kagawongs Mary Buie and her brave battle with breast cancer. The series is chronicling Ms. Buies journey as she navigates through doctors appointments, surgery, chemotherapy and recovery as well as exploring the various groups and resources that exist on Manitoulin for women fighting the disease. No stranger to uphill battles, Ms. Buie, an English-trained nurse, pushed emphatically for Ontario to recognize midwifery as a medical discipline and then returned to university to re-qualify as a midwife before founding Manitoulin Midwifery. KAGAWONGMary Buie is looking forward to the holidays this year. With her health and energy up she assured The Expositor she would be making the most of the season. I feel great, said Ms. Buie. I am doing well and so thankful that my health has improved and I have my energy back for the holidays. This time last year Ms. Buie was recovering from a modified radical mastectomy and undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Though she maintained her positive outlook, her energy was down and she was preparing for further treatment in the New Year. 2013 brought great news for Ms. Buie as she learned she was officially … Continue reading

We don’t need the Americans to tell us what to do!

'When all the facts are known, if they ever are, it will likely turn out that both Ms Khobragade and Ms Richard might have been at fault and so too might both governments be faulted, the US for a needlessly aggressive approach in the first place and India for its ham-handed response in the early stages of the affair,' says Rupa Subramanya. Strangely, various commentary has been quick to condemn Ms Khobragade, and unquestioningly accepted Ms Richard's version of events, painting her as a helpless victim. India is once again, it would appear, on the wrong side of international (mostly Western) public opinion. The arrest of Devyani Khobragade, the deputy consul general for India in New York over alleged visa fraud by paying her domestic help, a Government of India employee, less than the legal minimum wage in the state of New York, has caused a diplomatic row between the US and India. The case has garnered international notice for the harsh spotlight that it apparently casts on working conditions in India (in particular, how middle class and well-to-do Indians treat their domestic help) and of Indians working abroad in diplomatic missions. Equally, the case has received much attention in … Continue reading

ObamaCare may make finding treatment harder for mentally ill
Posted: Published on December 21st, 2013
Published December 21, 2013 The Wall Street Journal Dec. 21, 2011: Dr. William Sullivan, an emergency department physician at the University of Illinois at Chicago hospital, is seen through a re-enforced window of a psychiatric evaluation room in Chicago December 21, 2011.REUTERS To the outside world, it came across as mood swings and anger. But Regina Cullison would later be told by psychiatrists she struggled with depression and anxietyand that she needed help. And that is where her trouble began and ended. According to her mother, there were few psychiatrists in the county who took private insurance. When Ms. Cullison lost her job as a dentist's assistant, and with it her insurance, she switched to a nonprofit facility. Doctors came and went, and none stayed long enough to establish a regular pattern of treatment. After two years, Ms. Cullison abandoned her search for professional help and tried marijuana. Her mother, Carolyn Cullison, who is the director of a mental-health peer support group, said that helped push away the demons. But in May, while living together, the pair argued. Ms. Cullison apologized, retreated to a bedroom and shot herself. She was 26. As hard as it might be to acknowledge having … Continue reading

Wild place Harding on IR to adjust MS treatment
Posted: Published on December 19th, 2013
Despite his MS diagnosis, Minnesota Wild goalie Josh Harding is having a career season. (Alex Gallardo/AP) By Michael Blinn The Minnesota Wild have placed goalie Josh Harding on injured reserve while he makes an adjustment to his multiple sclerosis treatment. The net minder ranks first in the NHL in goals-against average (1.51) and shutouts (3), and is second in wins (18) and save percentage (.939). While those numbers would be stellar for any goalie, its even more unbelievable due to his diagnosis, which he went public with in November 2012. The disease has a range of symptoms, which can be anywhere from mild (numbness of the limbs) to severe (loss of vision, paralysis). Despite no cure and the unpredictability of symptoms, Harding has outplayed fellow Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom, and forced his way into the conversation to be one of Team Canadas Olympic hopefuls. Even with the minor setback, his narrative transcends hockey and has become a widespread feel-good story that includes Harding campaigning for MS awareness. Harding isnt the first pro goalie to play through the disease, however. Jordan Sigalet was a Hobey Baker finalist at Bowling Green in 2005, and went on to a successful minor league career … Continue reading

US prosecutor defends treatment of Indian diplomat
Posted: Published on December 19th, 2013
A right-wing Indian Hindu activist wearing a mask depicting US President Barack Obama takes part in a protest near the US Embassy in New Delhi A US attorney has defended the treatment of an Indian diplomat who was strip-searched after her arrest last week on charges of underpaying her nanny. The case has strained US-Indian relations. Manhattan AttorneyPreet Bharara, in an unusually lengthy written statement in a pending case, said he wanted to clear up the "misinformation" surrounding the arrest of diplomat Devyani Khobragade. He questioned why there was more sympathy for Ms Khobragade than her alleged victim. "Ms Khobragade was accorded courtesies well beyond what other defendants, most of whom are American citizens, are accorded," Mr Bharara said. He added that his sole motivation was to "hold accountable anyone who breaks the law - no matter what their societal status and no matter how powerful, rich or connected they are." He acknowledged that Ms Khobragade had been "fully searched" by a female deputy marshal after her arrest. "This is standard practice for every defendant, rich or poor, American or not," said Mr Bharara. Mr Bharara was born in India, raised in New Jersey and has built a reputation as … Continue reading

Alysia Abbott’s Fairyland Will Get the Sofia Coppola Treatment
Posted: Published on December 18th, 2013
Sofia Coppola will turnFairyland:AMemoir of My Father, AlysiaAbbotts well-received memoir, into a movie. American Zoetrope announced yesterday that it had acquired the motion picture rights to Ms. Abbotts memoir about growing up with her father, the gay poet and activist Steve Abbott, in San Francisco during1970s and 1980s before and during the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. I love the book Fairyland; its a sweet and unique love story of a girl and her dad, both growing up together in 1970s San Francisco. I think it will make an engaging and touching movie on a subject Ive never seen before, Ms. Coppola in the announcement. Ms. Coppola will co-write the screenplay adaptation with Andrew Dunham, her frequent collaborator and produce the movie along with her brother Roman. Sofias understanding of the feminine perspective and the artistic vision that she shares with Andrew Durham make them ideal partners to make this movie. I could not be happier, Ms. Abbott said. And of course, Ms. Abbott isnt alone in her excitement. Elizabeth Riley, the books publicist at Norton, had thought out loud about Sofia Coppola as the dream filmmaker for it with us Alysia, me, and Amy Cherry, the books editor back at … Continue reading

Opexa Therapeutics Provides MS Trial Enrollment Update; 70% of Patients Enrolled
Posted: Published on December 17th, 2013
We are pleased with the continued progress we have made in the Abili-T clinical trial and that patient enrollment has increased steadily over the past several months, commented Neil K. Warma, Opexas President and Chief Executive Officer. With the enrollment of patient number 126 in the trial, we have reached the 70% enrollment target out of a total of 180 patients. We are continuing our efforts to have the trial fully enrolled in early 2014. Furthermore, we are working with a few additional key multiple sclerosis centers and hope to have two more trial sites up and running shortly to support enrollment. This would increase the total number of clinical trial sites to 35 in the U.S. and Canada. We are especially pleased that many of the first sites that began enrolling patients at the trials outset continue to recruit patients into the study. This may reflect the interest that the Secondary Progressive MS patients have in participating in the Abili-T trial and the realization that there are limited treatments options currently available on the market for these patients. Additionally, we are proceeding well with our Immune Monitoring program, which is an important component of the Abili-T trial. The value … Continue reading

Aphasia research wins award
Posted: Published on December 17th, 2013
A PhD candidate from Victoria University of Wellington has won an award for her research in the field of aphasia research and treatment. Paula Speer from Germany was one of five people to receive the biannual Gesellschaft fr Aphasieforschung und Behandlung (Society for Aphasia Research and Treatment) prize for outstanding work in the field by young researchers. Ms Speer has been researching nonfluent aphasia, a language disorder that prevents people from organising words into sentences and speaking fluently after they have had a stroke. Her research has found that stroke survivors with the disorder need to choose common words early on in a sentence and avoid ones that are too similar in order to construct accurate sentences. Delays and confusion occurred when they tried to use similar-or semantically related-words in the same sentence, such as king and queen (two people) or bear and dog (two animals). Ms Speer breaks from tradition by focusing on the word content of speech, rather than grammatical structure. Her research builds on the work of her supervisor Dr Carolyn Wilshire, Senior Lecturer in Victorias School of Psychology, which looked at single word production of people with nonfluent aphasia. "Word content isnt an area that has … Continue reading
