Local Musician is Busking for Mobility
Posted: Published on August 19th, 2013
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Multiple sclerosis, or MS, affects more than 2 million people worldwide, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. It affects the central nervous system, often causing numbness and mobility problems. One Cedar Rapids man, armed with only a couple musical instruments, has been performing on the street to help people with the disease. Four years ago, Mark Brown started strumming, singing, and humming to raise money for MS research and treatment. Or as he calls it, "Busking for Mobility." Brown has been a busker - or street performer - for a long time, so he makes it look easy. But playing became a challenge for him 13 years ago. "I had sensations coming down the side of my face, which I was hoping it wasn't an aneurysm, but then I was losing control of my fingers a little bit," Brown recalled. An MRI revealed he had MS. However, it doesn't keep him from carrying a tune. "I got quite a few here, I've got about 200 songs," Brown said. Like any good street performer, Brown takes requests. He knows lot of oldies. "The kids look at me kind of puzzled sometimes," said Brown. "I see a … Continue reading

5 Companies Leading the Fight Against Multiple Sclerosis
Posted: Published on August 19th, 2013
It's a disease that doesn't often find itself in the spotlight, but multiple sclerosis is quickly becoming an ailment that drugmakers are focusing their efforts on to make a quality-of-life difference for patients. MS is a disease in which the body's own autoimmune system attacks its central nervous system, consisting of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, disabling it over time. Some of the symptoms of MS can be relatively minor, such as tingling of the limbs, but others can be considerably more severe, including loss of vision and/or paralysis. In recent years, the incidence rate of MS has been on the rise. However, one of the few tidbits of good news here is that this may be because of earlier and proper diagnosis rather than an actual increase in MS as a disease. In total, an estimated 400,000 people in the U.S. suffer from MS, with approximately 10,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Women are more susceptible than men to getting MS, with the diseases in both genders most often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50. Researchers have also discovered a correlation between age and aggressiveness of the disease. The older a person is at the … Continue reading

Controversial Theory Behind Possible MS Cause Refuted
Posted: Published on August 16th, 2013
WEDNESDAY, Aug. 14 (HealthDay News) -- New research finds that there is no evidence that multiple sclerosis is associated with reduced or blocked blood flow in the veins of the head or neck. The study results challenge a controversial theory that a condition called chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) -- a narrowing of veins that drain blood from the brain and upper spinal cord -- is associated with MS. The theory also holds that patients would benefit from using balloon angioplasty or stents to widen the veins, a treatment called liberation therapy. However, this Canadian study of 100 people with MS found no abnormalities in the veins in their neck or brain. The findings were published online Aug. 14 in the journal PLoS One. Each patient underwent ultrasound and an MRI of brain and neck veins on the same day. The research team included a radiologist and two ultrasound technicians who received training in liberation therapy. "[The results] provide compelling evidence against the involvement of CCSVI in MS," principal investigator Ian Rodger, a professor emeritus in the School of Medicine of McMaster University in Ontario, said in a university news release. "Our findings bring a much needed perspective to the … Continue reading

No evidence of vein blockages in MS patients, Canadian study says
Posted: Published on August 15th, 2013
Andrea Janus, CTVNews.ca Published Wednesday, August 14, 2013 4:54PM EDT Last Updated Wednesday, August 14, 2013 7:40PM EDT Canadian researchers say they have found no evidence that restricted blood flow in the veins of the head and neck is linked to the development of multiple sclerosis. The researchers say their findings debunk a controversial theory that suggests vein blockages are responsible for MS symptoms, but critics say the researchers used outmoded techniques to detect the condition. In a study published online Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers from McMaster University in Ontario say they failed to find any blockages in the internal jugular, vertebral or deep cerebral veins in 99 of 100 patients with MS, compared with 100 subjects with no history of the disease. For the study, the researchers conducted ultrasounds and MRIs on the head and neck veins of all study subjects to look for evidence of chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI), essentially blockages in the head and neck veins that prevent blood from properly draining from the brain. It is Italian researcher Dr. Paolo Zamboni who first suggested that CCSVI is linked to MS, and he reported that patients symptoms were alleviated after undergoing angioplasty to … Continue reading

Canadian study casts doubt on Zamboni's 'liberation treatment' for MS
Posted: Published on August 15th, 2013
An experimental treatment for multiple sclerosis that has inspired hope among patients, scorn among skeptics and a cottage industry abroad has no basis in scientific fact, a new Canadian study shows. The study, authored by researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton and published Wednesday in the online journal PLOS ONE, is the latest to cast doubt on a theory by Italian vascular surgeon Paolo Zamboni that MS is related to blockages in the main veins draining the neck. Dr. Zamboni calls the theory chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, or CCSVI, and his pioneering procedure to widen the veins, dubbed liberation treatment by believers, has excited MS sufferers and moved thousands of them worldwide to seek the surgery. But the McMaster study found no link between impaired blood flow or blockage in the veins. MS Researchers examined 100 MS patients and 100 people without the disease. Lead researcher Ian Rodger said the findings bring a much-needed perspective to the debate surrounding liberation treatment. We saw absolutely no evidence of CCSVI in the MS patients, Dr. Rodger said. Ive been in research a long time and its rare that you find results as black and white as ours. The study was the first … Continue reading

Cats found in trailer get treatment
Posted: Published on August 14th, 2013
Published: 8/13/2013 - Updated: 8 minutes ago BY TANYA IRWIN BLADE STAFF WRITER FREMONT Barbara Shockley never imagined that rescuing three cats from the winter cold seven years ago would result in an animal-cruelty officer showing up with a warrant at her home. Thethree cats were never spayed or neutered she said she could not afford it and they began multiplying. PHOTO GALLERY: Confiscated cats comforted at Humane Society On Monday, the Sandusky County Humane Society seized 70 cats, including four dead kittens, from the trailer, located in the Indian Springs Mobile Home Park, 220 Maple Lane, Green Springs, after serving Ms. Shockley, 54, with a search warrant, according to Kelly Askins, Sandusky County Humane Society shelter manager and animal cruelty investigator. I didnt have the money to get them fixed, Ms. Shockley said. I would call all of the humane societies and shelters within a 70-mile radius and they were always full and wouldnt take any of them. Ms. Askins said Ms. Shockley is not a typical cat hoarder, who is actively seeking more cats and continues to bring more and more home. She had good intentions when she started, I think she just got overwhelmed, Ms. Askins said. … Continue reading
