NHS change of heart over life-saving cancer treatment

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2013

NHS change of heart over life-saving cancer treatment 2:00pm Friday 2nd August 2013 in News A MUM-of-three who was refused cancer treatment has been told the NHS is now prepared to provide the life-extending procedure. Two months ago Kathy Craven learned she wouldnt be able to have selective internal radiotherapy treatment (SIRT) for the cancer in her liver without funding it privately. The treatment is currently approved by NHS England on a case-by-case basis. After she issued a heartfelt-plea in the Daily Echo and online, well-wishers raised 30,000 in just a week, and Ms Craven, 43, underwent the first stage of SIRT at Southampton General Hospital on July 4. But the NHS has now decided to fund the treatment, and she is offering all those who donated money a refund. It was so unexpected, as far as we were concerned they wouldnt fund it and that was that, she said. It is positive news, but it shows that if you find a treatment like this that you are sure can help you have to kick and scream or you wont get anywhere. She said the donations had nevertheless been vital in getting timely treatment. Read more here: NHS change of … Continue reading

Hidden beneath all the numbers and metrics in Biogen Idec's(NASDAQ: BIIB) recent earnings reportis a key confirmation of a shifting market in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. This alteration could yield billions of dollars for companies positioned to take advantage of it. What Happened On July 25, Biogen reported second-quarter financial results. Earnings of $2.30 per share and revenue of $1.7 billion both trumped estimates, while the company's higher guidance fueled investors'optimism regarding the company's future. However, neither development could steal the report's spotlight away from the unexpected success of the companys new multiple sclerosis oral drug, Tecfidera. The drug generated sales of $192 million in the quarter, more than double what the Street expected. A Coming Revolution in MS Treatment Contrary to most current multiple sclerosistreatments , Tecfidera is a pill, not an injection. The treatments which currently dominate this $14.4 billion global market-- Avonex (Biogen), Copaxone (Teva), Tysabri (Biogen), Rebif (Pfizer & EMD Sereno) -- are all injections. … Continue reading

Addition To Ruvo Center's Ms Staff Expected To Improve Research, Treatment Options

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2013

The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, its services for multiple sclerosis strained by a heavy patient load, has expanded its MS staff. That means fewer patients will end up in hospital emergency rooms for expensive treatment. The expansion also allows the clinic to start participating in two international trials in the next two months, according to Dr. Timothy West, director of the MS program. Physician/researcher Dr. Le Hua and social worker Joanne Fairchild will join him in helping patients with the neuromuscular disorder. One of the trials will study the drug Siponimod, designed to slow or stop progression of the most severe form of the disease. About half of the people with MS end up with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, the most severe form of the disease and one we cant really treat, so the patient goes steadily downhill, West said. This is a very important trial to me on both a professional and personal level. My mother has secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, as do far too many of my patients. The other drug trial involves the oral medication Gilenya, already used by patients in earlier stages of the disease. Though data suggest it has neuro-protective effects, … Continue reading

Starkville, MS Gum Surgery is Now Offered Using a New Laser Protocol by Dr. John Starr for an Alternative Gum Disease …

Posted: Published on July 31st, 2013

Starkville, MS (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 Golden Triangle Periodontal Center's Dr. John Starr has joined the minority of dental professionals who can offer patients gum disease treatment in the form of the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). Patients in Starkville, MS who avoided traditional periodontal surgery can now receive an effective, less invasive form of gum surgery from Dr. Starr. LANAP uses an FDA-cleared laser, the Periolase MVP-7, to exclusively remove gum disease, leaving healthy teeth and gum tissue completely untouched. In contrast to conventional gum surgery, which involves cutting, loss of gum tissue, reshaping of bone, and stitching, LANAP generally causes minimal pain or bleeding. Patients also usually require less time to heal after the procedure than they would after traditional surgery. Dr. Starr begins the laser gum surgery by taking a measurement of the depth of the patient's gum pockets. Next, he uses the laser to remove only the gum disease. The procedure can be this precise because the wavelength of the laser does not affect healthy tissue, bone, or the root of the tooth; it is only absorbed by bacteria and diseased tissue. Dr. Starr then uses a tool to remove tartar from the teeth, which … Continue reading

Amanda Kierce, director of the Haggerty Community School, and her dad, Donn Hockman, Department of Public Works facility supervisor at the Cambridge Senior Center, will participate in their 11th Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Challenge Walk this September. Hockman was diagnosed with MS in 1998. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. The progression, severity and specific symptoms of MS are both unpredictable and variable. Today, new advances in research and treatment are giving new hope to those affected by the disease. To raise the much-needed funds that support both research and those living with MS, Kierce and Hockman and their Challenge Walk Team, Donns Sole Patrol, have committed to the Challenge Walk. To accomplish their fundraising goals, they have planned an event Saturday, Aug. 10. Cruising for a Cause, a scenic three-hour Charles Riverboat Cocktail Cruise, will include a buffet dinner, departing at 6:30 p.m. from the lower basin of the Charles River (across from the Royal Sonesta Hotel). Tickets are $75 each, $125 for two. Tickets for both of these events can be purchased in advance by contacting either Kierce 617-349-6264 or Hockman at 617-349-6053. Gillard on Abbott: 'Oh God, give me strength'

Former prime minister Julia Gillard says gender issues are more easily glossed over than racism. Photo: Alex Ellinghausen Former prime minister Julia Gillard says Australians would have been more outraged at her treatment as a woman if she were black. In a lengthy interview conducted while Ms Gillard was still Labor leader and published in the latest The Monthly, Ms Gillard said politics had become more combative, particularly in recent years under minority government in Australia. ''Is the stuff against Barack Obama because he's African American? ... Or would they have played as hard as that against any successful Democrat? Well, I suspect it's a bit of both,'' she said. ''I think some of the stuff about me, because it is about gender, gets glossed over more easily.'' Advertisement In March 2011, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott stood at a rally against the carbon tax beside signs that read, ''Juliar: Bob Browns [sic] Bitch'' and ''Ditch the Witch''. ''If I was the first indigenous prime minister, and (Tony) Abbott had gone out and stood next to a sign that said, 'Ditch the black bastard', I reckon that would be the end of a political career,'' Ms Gillard said. ''And it's not … Continue reading
