Conman facing life sentence for murdering secret lover
Posted: Published on July 26th, 2013
Ms Lee - the owner of a ''luxury cattery'' - suffered fatal head wounds from ''a sustained attack with a blunt object'' and was mutilated by Ryan in a bid to get rid of DNA evidence, the jury heard. Assistant Chief Constable Ruth Purdie, of Cheshire Police, said: ''David Ryan gave Diana attention and affection and preyed on her trusting and kind nature for his own ends. We now know that his intentions toward Diana were fuelled by greed and Ryan's intention to exploit her financially to try and recover himself from the mountain of debt he faced. ''We have been left in little doubt that Ryan's attack on Diana - a diminutive and gentle lady - was brutal and sadistic. "He showed contempt and compounded his disregard for her when he did his utmost to remove DNA evidence and then destroy her body.'' She added: ''Although Ryan refused to admit his guilt in this horrific murder, the prosecution were able to prove that he concocted a web of lies and brutally murdered a woman who had done nothing more than fall for the charm of a conman.'' Ryan, with greying, shoulder-length hair and wearing a grey suit, white shirt … Continue reading

Cannabis constituent found to have no effect on MS progression
Posted: Published on July 25th, 2013
Washington, July 24 (ANI): A new study has found no evidence of a cannabis constituent in the progress of multiple sclerosis. The first large non-commercial clinical study to investigate whether the main active constituent of cannabis (tetrahydrocannabinol or THC) is effective in slowing the course of progressive multiple sclerosis (MS), shows that there is no evidence to suggest this; although benefits were noted for those at the lower end of the disability scale. The CUPID (Cannabinoid Use in Progressive Inflammatory brain Disease) study was carried out by researchers from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. CUPID enrolled nearly 500 people with MS from 27 centres around the UK, and has taken eight years to complete. People with progressive MS were randomised to receive either THC capsules or identical placebo capsules for three years, and were carefully followed to see how their MS changed over this period. The two main outcomes of the trial were a disability scale administered by neurologists (the Expanded Disability Status Scale), and a patient report scale of the impact of MS on people with the condition (the Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale 29). Overall the study found no evidence to support an effect of THC … Continue reading

Vulin accused in tears over burns images
Posted: Published on July 25th, 2013
Natalie Dimitrovska, the woman accused of purposefully setting fire to Dana Vulin in jealous anger, today sobbed as graphic images of her alleged victims burns were shown in her trial. Ms Dimitrovska is accused of threatening to "ruin" the 27-year-olds pretty face, breaking into her unit in February last year and dousing her with methylated spirits as Ms Vulin held a lit flame lamp and demanded her to leave. Ms Vulin, who has rejected suggestions she had been wielding the flame and a can of pepper spray at her alleged attacker, has testified about the excruciating pain of her multiple injuries and the fact she has to wear a compression suit for two years. Today, the jury heard evidence from a surgeon about the extent of her injuries and how they had been so severe that she would have died without treatment. Dr Linda Monshizadeh, who specialises in plastic and reconstructive surgery, said Ms Vulin had been admitted to hospital with deep partial and also full thickness burns to 60 per cent of her body. Photos of Ms Vulins burns to her torso and arms were shown to the District Court jury, including an image of her lying on her … Continue reading

A Look at Four Major Players in Multiple Sclerosis Treatments

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, debilitating disease that affects an estimated 2.1 million people worldwide. Although the disease is not usually fatal, it can have devastating effects on the central nervous system, causing poor coordination, extreme fatigue, blurred vision, blindness, slurred speech and a loss of memory and concentration. MS symptoms occur due to an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks myelin, the protective insulation of the nerve fibers in the central nervous system (CNS). Many nerve fibers are severed and replaced by hardened tissue, slowing and disrupting neural pathways. MS is tough to diagnose since symptoms can appear and disappear randomly, and symptoms can be mistaken for other diseases. Since the CDC in the United States does not require physicians to report new cases of MS, as it is not contagious or directly inherited, the total number of domestic MS cases is unclear at the moment. There is no cure for MS, only disease-modifying treatments, many … Continue reading

'MS wonder drug has given me a second chance at life…'
Posted: Published on July 24th, 2013
MULTIPLE sclerosis sufferer Kerry Lovatt says she has been given a second chance at life after becoming only the 76th person in the country to be prescribed a 1,400-a-month drug. The 32-year-old was diagnosed with the condition after suffering poor balance and blurred vision in September 2009. Kerry Lovatt with her friend Stewart Jepson. Picture: Ben Warburton Doctors initially thought Kerry, of Hampshire Crescent, Lightwood, had shingles after one side of her face went numb. Kerry, an assistant manager at Bon Marche, said: "First of all I had problems with my ears, they were over sensitive and I couldn't bear to hear running water or the TV. My vision went and I struggled to pick things up. Then things started to get worse. I had funny sensations down the left side of my body, I couldn't walk and I was being sick all of the time. It was really scary because no one knew what was up with me." Dana Vulin, who was set on fire and suffered horrific burns at her Rivervale apartment. Picture: Channel Nine Source: PerthNow A WOMAN suffered potentially fatal burns to more than half her body after she was set alight with methylated spirits by an acquaintance who was convinced she was having an affair with her estranged husband, the District Court has heard. Natalie Dimitrovska, 29, is on trial for the grievous bodily harm of Dana Vulin, who was set on fire in her Rivervale apartment in February 2012. Ms Vulin suffered full thickness burns to 60 per cent of her body and is receiving ongoing treatment. Ms Dimitrovska has pleaded not guilty to the charge. Prosecutor Linda Petrusa told the jury that the attack was the culmination of weeks of harassment from Ms Dimitrovska, who believed her husband Edin Handanovic was staying at Ms Vulin's apartment. Ms Petrusa said Dimitrovska had previously told Ms Vulin she would "ruin her pretty little face'' and two days before the attack stormed into the apartment demanding to know where her husband was hiding. Ms Vulin had fallen asleep on her couch after a visit from a friend and woke up to the voice of a … Continue reading
