Mum killed ‘possessed’ baby son: inquest
Posted: Published on July 15th, 2013
A mother who killed her two-year-old son by standing on his mouth and chest believed she was expelling an evil spirit, a court has been told. Rachael Hadley was acutely psychotic at the time and didn't understand the consequences of her actions, counsel assisting Amy Cacas told the South Australian Coroners Court on Monday. "She didn't know she was killing her son," Ms Cacas said. "She believed she was expelling an evil spirit from him and expected him to recover." Duke Hadley died on November 5, 2009 from asphyxiation caused by compression of his neck and chest. His mother was charged with his murder but found mentally incompetent. She has since been released on licence. Ms Cacas said the issue for the inquest would be whether or not anything more could have been done in relation to Ms Hadley's treatment to have prevented the boy's death. The boy's father, Jason Hura, told the court that Ms Hadley had twice been admitted to a mental health clinic for treatment. But he said she would stop taking her medication because it made her sleep all day. In the period before the boy's death she had been "getting paranoid" and was constantly locking … Continue reading

MS Dhoni extends helping hand to ailing friend
Posted: Published on July 15th, 2013
Dhoni had previously credited his 'helicopter shot' to former Ranji cricketer Santosh Lal, who has been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. Ranchi: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was extending all possible help to the inventor of his famous helicopter shot and one of his close childhood friends Santosh Lal, who has been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and was airlifted to Delhi on Monday for treatment. "Former Ranji cricketer Santosh Lal was taken to Delhi by an air ambulance and admitted to a hospital there. Besides Dhoni, all his friends have come forward in helping him fight his disease. Dhoni is in touch and helping in making all necessary arrangements for the treatment," said a close friend of Dhoni. Lal, a Ranji player was admitted in a unconscious state at a Ranchi hospital before being airlifted to the national capital. Jharkhand State Cricket Association secretary Rajesh Verma said the JSCA has donated Rs one lakh to Lal for his treatment and Rs 39,500 was collected among the association members and handed over to his family. "Lal has played Ranji Trophy with Dhoni," Chanchal Bhattacharya, Dhoni's coach during his formative years, said. Suraj Mohan, another friend, was with Lal for the last three … Continue reading

Frustration over death of patient
Posted: Published on July 14th, 2013
July 15, 2013, 7:35 a.m. Source: The Herald Unfair pressures on medical staff to discharge patients from hospital in time to meet treatment targets have been blamed for contributing to the death of an elderly grandmother. Kathleen Hawes said her 79-year-old mother, from Carey Bay, was moved four times between three hospitals in the weeks leading up to her death in August 2011. Ms Hawes is calling for a series of changes after a two-year battle with the Health Care Complaints Commission and Hunter New England Health. She said a series of failures relating to hospital shuffling, nursing care, delayed diagnosis and failure to adhere to resuscitation procedures contributed to her mothers early demise. However, the commission deemed it not serious enough to investigate and Ms Hawes was frustrated by conciliation proceedings with Hunter New England Health. She said the commission should have to properly investigate all complaints to identify systemic failure. The mother of five and grandmother died from an infection in a heart valve, which was diagnosed too late. Though the condition is by nature difficult to diagnose, Ms Hawes said there were heart tests the year before that were never finalised while her mother was shuffled between … Continue reading

Gary Levin’s Natural Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Review Reveals New Effective Multiple Sclerosis Treatment
Posted: Published on July 14th, 2013
Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) July 14, 2013 http://www.SclerosisTreatment.com Exposes Dr. Gary M. Levin's Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Book, a step-by-step method that rehabilitates the immune system and boosts the supporting body systems to eliminate all MS symptoms. Natural Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Book provides people with an effective multiple sclerosis treatment, tips, safe methods, natural remedies, diet plans and detailed instructions that are easy to understand and follow. Gary Levin has been a medical researcher and a surgeon in the United States for over 30 years now, and 20 years have been dedicated to treating patients with multiple sclerosis. The main difference in this book is that Dr. Gary Levin provides information according to which MS is the deterioration of the myelin sheaths. This occurs when the immune system thinks that the myelin sheaths are a foreign intruder, which must be destroyed, and as a consequence electrical impulses are stopped or slowed as they travel through the body's nervous system. Dr. Gary M. Levin's Book brings into the public attention the causes of MS, symptoms, signs, types, treatments and prevention, stating that MS is one of the most discouraging and debilitating conditions anyone can ever have. This leads to patients loosing their muscular … Continue reading

In the last six months, the NASDAQ biotechnology index has risen by an impressive 26.72%. This means that biotech stocks, on average, had more than double the return of S&P 500 index. These impressive returns are, however, difficult to understand because medical news has not reported any major breakthrough treatment for the various dangerous diseases that exist today. This fact rings a bell in my mind and I ask myself whether these valuations are based on some solid information or not. It is not even possible to ascertain what percentage of biotech companies will be able to put drugs on the market in the coming months. I have identified three companies that are involved in developing drugs for Multiple Sclerosis, or MS. For the purpose of this analysis, we must first understand what the disease is all about. MS is a disease which is, at present, non-treatable. It is an auto-immune disease in which the bodys own immune system attacks the … Continue reading

A new cannabis-based licensed drug has transformed the life of multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferer Teresa Pointer from Aylsham. Mrs Pointer, 42, spotted an advertisement in the EDP eight years ago, asking people to take part in treatment trials at the James Paget University Hospital, Gorleston, and she has not looked back. Today, thanks to two daily sprays of Sativex into her mouth, Mrs Pointer can sleep at night, walk for longer - and she has got her sense of humour back. I got in touch with Dr Willy Notcutt at the James Paget and then started on a clinical trial of Sativex. It was the best decision Ive ever made and its done so much for me. It really has given me my life back, said Mrs Pointer, who lives with her husband and two daughters in Hungate Street. She was diagnosed in 2004 with MS, a disease which affects nerves in the brain … Continue reading

Suspend MS liberation therapy fund, doctors urge
Posted: Published on July 13th, 2013
Dr. Robert Desjardins, president of the New Brunswick Medical Society, says it's time to allocate funding to proven treatments. (CBC) New Brunswicks doctors are urging the provincial government to immediately suspend funding for liberation therapy and divert it to other "clinically effective" methods of treating multiple sclerosis. Recent studies have shown liberation therapy, which involves opening up narrow neck veins, is largely ineffective for most patients, and in some cases results in complications, New Brunswick Medical Society president, Dr. Robert Desjardins, said in a statement on Friday. "Its time for New Brunswick to suspend funding for individuals seeking this treatment," he said. New Brunswick is the only province that provides tax dollars to patients to help them get the procedure, which has not been approved as a viable treatment in Canada and must be performed outside the country. Requests for the fund have dropped off, said Desjardins, but dozens of people who wanted liberation therapy have been approved for payments of $2,500 each. The funding was announced before trials on the treatment were fully completed," he said. Its time to move on and use those health dollars to help MS patients through proven means. The medical society has offered to … Continue reading

N.B. medical group want gov’t to stop funding controversial MS treatment
Posted: Published on July 13th, 2013
FREDERICTON -- The New Brunswick Medical Society is calling on the provincial government to stop spending public money on so-called liberation therapy for multiple sclerosis patients. The group says the money that now goes to a fund to help people in New Brunswick with MS pay for the treatment would be better spent on other clinically effective methods of treating the disease. President Dr. Robert Desjardins has posted an open letter on the group's website, calling on the province to immediately suspend the fund. Desjardins says while doctors and patients once held hope for liberation therapy, recent studies have shown it's not medically effective in treating most people with MS. In May, Finance Minister Blaine Higgs said the government will continue offering public money to people seeking liberation treatment outside Canada despite waning interest in the procedure. The government has budgeted $75,000 this year for the fund on top of the $400,000 it set aside in the first two years of the program. Applicants can get $2,500 each if a community group raises matching funds for the procedure, which can cost more than $10,000. Highlands Ranch rides to combat MS
Posted: Published on July 10th, 2013
When Steve Schade was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007, his family rallied around him without hesitation and started helping raise money in search of a cure. Just 34 years old at the time, the Highlands Ranch man used to enjoy his summer evenings playing softball. He began to have difficulty seeing the ball coming at him and suddenly could no longer see colors vividly. Things were almost gray scale, he said. About the same time he also began to feel numbness in his feet and knees. It felt like my legs were falling asleep, he said. I thought it was a circulation issue, that I had a pinched nerve. It wasnt apparent at all times, but was very gradual. With no specific diagnosis process available for multiple sclerosis, Schade underwent a years worth of tests, up to and including spinal taps, before receiving a probable MS diagnosis and beginning treatment. He has been on numerous drugs and steroids over the past six years, and does everything he can to stay sharp and active. Since the summer of 2008, one of the ways he has stayed active is by participating in the local Bike MS ride each year. Accompanied by … Continue reading
