Highlands Ranch man rides to combat MS

Posted: Published on July 10th, 2013

When Steve Schade was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007, his family rallied around him without hesitation and started helping raise money in search of a cure. Just 34 years old at the time, the Highlands Ranch man used to enjoy his summer evenings playing softball. He began to have difficulty seeing the ball coming at him and suddenly could no longer see colors vividly. Things were almost gray scale, he said. About the same time he also began to feel numbness in his feet and knees. It felt like my legs were falling asleep, he said. I thought it was a circulation issue, that I had a pinched nerve. It wasnt apparent at all times, but was very gradual. With no specific diagnosis process available for multiple sclerosis, Schade underwent a years worth of tests, up to and including spinal taps, before receiving a probable MS diagnosis and beginning treatment. He has been on numerous drugs and steroids over the past six years, and does everything he can to stay sharp and active. Since the summer of 2008, one of the ways he has stayed active is by participating in the local Bike MS ride each year. Accompanied by … Continue reading

Posted: Published on July 8th, 2013

Lucinda Creighton Psychiatrists opposed to the suicide clause in the abortion legislation have appealed to wavering TDs and to Ministers to look at the evidence-based research. At a press conference in Dublin yesterday three psychiatrists voiced their support for a proposed amendment, by Minister of State Lucinda Creighton, to the clause in the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill, to provide a treatment programme instead. Ms Creighton proposed a care pathway for women presenting as suicidal, including focused therapy at home, if they were still expressing suicidal thoughts after a number of assessments. Medical evidence Donegal-based psychiatrist Dr Eleanor Corcoran said treatment should be based on medical evidence and not on political considerations. Minister Creightons amendment is consistent with all the evidence that we have from international research of what is effective from women who are in a very vulnerable state and who are suffering with depression, she said. We would hope that the other TDs and Ministers would look at whats in the best interests of women and look at the scientific research. Dr Bernie McCabe of the HSE Louth-Meath mental health service said: Our concern is about the lack of consideration of evidence in relation to the development … Continue reading

Women’s group accuses Kevin Rudd of treachery over Julia Gillard treatment

Posted: Published on July 5th, 2013

A women's rights group has accused Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of treachery for his treatment of predecessor Julia Gillard. The Victorian Women's Trust has placed full-page advertisements in four Australian newspapers praising Ms Gillard's achievements and slamming both Labor and the Liberal parties for their actions over the past three years. The statement says Mr Rudd orchestrated a treacherous "seek-and-destroy" mission against Ms Gillard, while Tony Abbott made opportunistic appeals to people's prejudices. The trust's Mary Crooks says the past three years were poisonous and led to a great loss of civility and decency. "We just want to put on the public record early in the piece the fact that this was a successful minority government, led by her (Gillard)," Ms Crooks said. "I would really urge people to start asking some questions - what have we learned about all this - and address the need to restore respect and civility in our political discourse." The advertisement also accuses seasoned reporters of becoming players in an aggressive campaign of sexist and chauvinistic abuse. Ms Crooks says the mainstream media failed to engage in dispassionate reporting. "I think there's been a hostile media, by and large, over the last three years, … Continue reading

Craven County woman treats MS with diet, exercise, faith

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2013

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a familiar enemy. Thousands of people ride for a cure for MS in cycling-related fundraising events every year, including one in New Bern each September. The neuro-muscular autoimmune disease affects more than half a million people nationwide, some with crippling effects, and so far research has not pinned down a cause or cure, but continues to find treatments to help many patients better cope with it. Geneva Best Horne of the Pleasant Hill community just outside New Bern was diagnosed with MS in 2006 after she didnt recover as quickly as doctors felt she should from a 2005 accident. When the diagnosis came down, Horne was advised that an option for treatment was weekly interferon injections, but I asked if could go natural, she said. She was already interested in exercise and had played basketball at the West Street and J.T. Barber schools as a girl. And she had moved to a healthy, more natural lifestyle years before, spurred on by Dr. Neil Bender, who started Eastern Carolina Internal Medicine (now CarolinaEast Internal Medicine) in Pollocksville. He told me you can take charge of your health or depend on medication for the rest of your life, … Continue reading

RACHEL PORTER's husband Jon was diagnosed with MS ten years ago Now a new diet could help him cope with MS and maybe beat it Diet bans meat and dairy and most saturated fats By Rachel Porter PUBLISHED: 16:00 EST, 29 June 2013 | UPDATED: 16:08 EST, 29 June 2013 674 shares 53 View comments Every year, more than 2,500 Britons are told they have multiple sclerosis. If they ask what it means, theyre likely to be given the textbook definition: its a progressively disabling, incurable, neurological illness. Theyll be told that pain, disability and a range of distressing symptoms are in their future. How bad it gets, how quickly it happens its not possible to predict. But theres not a lot they can do, except take the drugs available. That was the experience of my husband, Jon, when he was diagnosed ten years ago. He has relapsing-remitting MS, which means symptoms appear during a relapse, then fade partially or completely. New hope: Rachel Porter and her husband Jon, who was diagnosed with MS ten years ago, hope the new diet can change it all Continue reading here: Why no meat, no dairy and meditation every day COULD be the … Continue reading
