MHI-MS Licenses Electrostatic Precipitator Technology to Tecpro Systems of India
Posted: Published on June 17th, 2013
Tokyo, June 17, 2013 - (JCN Newswire) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems, Ltd. (MHI-MS), a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has concluded an agreement with Tecpro Systems Limited (Tecpro), an Indian firm mainly engaged in material and ash handling systems and balance of plant (BoP) equipment, under which MHI-MS is to provide electrostatic precipitator (EP) technology to the Indian licensee. The licensing arrangement targets collaborative and proactive exploration of local demand for high-performance EPs, which are now marking growth in tandem with India's increasing number of new coal-fired power plants and ironworks. Under the agreement, MHI-MS will provide Tecpro with technology related to EP engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). With this advanced technology, Tecpro aims to accommodate a wide variety of EP needs in India, including such applications as coal-fired boilers for power generation or industrial uses and incorporation into production processes at ironworks. Tecpro's head office is located in Chennai. Since its establishment in 1990, the company has achieved steady business expansion by aggressively introducing overseas technologies: for example, coal unloading and conveying systems and large-size blowers. The company has established a solid position in its Indian market as an EPC company in the BoP … Continue reading

Columbus, MS Periodontist, Dr. John W. Starr of Golden Triangle Periodontal Center Brings Laser Gum Disease Treatment …
Posted: Published on June 14th, 2013
Columbus, MS (PRWEB) June 13, 2013 John W. Starr, Jr., D.M.D. is now accepting new patients from Columbus, MS who are looking for a periodontist that is certified on the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) for treating gum disease. Gum disease affects millions of American adults. While some experience the minor discomfort of the early stages of the disease, many suffer from sore and bleeding gums, receding gums, and even tooth loss when the disease is more advanced. Gum disease treatment can remove diseased tissue and reduce pain and suffering. Unfortunately, dental problems are not the only problems that periodontal or gum disease contributes to. Studies have found links between gum disease and other serious health complications such as stroke, diabetes, respiratory illness, and even heart disease. Treating periodontal disease while it is in the early stages is relatively easy; however, more aggressive treatment is required as the disease advances. Traditionally, a periodontist had to use a scalpel to cut away the unhealthy gum tissue. With LANAP, the PerioLase MVP-7 laser is used to remove the diseased tissue. It is considered a minimally invasive procedure that is up to 95 percent effective. In addition to the unhealthy tissue, the … Continue reading

Biogen Idec shares fall on MS drug data worries
Posted: Published on June 13th, 2013
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Shares of Biogen Idec fell Wednesday after an analyst said the company's new multiple sclerosis treatment could face pricing pressure in Europe from generic drugs. THE SPARK: Analyst Dr. Yaron Werber lowered his rating on the Massachusetts biotech company's stock to "Neutral" from "Buy." Werber said in a research note that he still likes the drug Tecfidera, but he doesn't think the European Medicines Agency will provide regulatory data protection on the drug. That would prevent other companies from referencing its data when they submit their generic drug applications for lower-priced versions. THE BACKGROUND: Analysts expect that Tecfidera, a pill taken once a day, will become a leading treatment for multiple sclerosis. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved it in late March. THE ANALYSIS: Werber said the drug's U.S. launch should turn out better than expected, and Tecfidera may tally $422 million in sales this year. "We are big fans of the drug in the U.S.," Werber wrote in a note to investors Tuesday. But the analyst also said that the stock has had a nice run so far this year and its high price-to-earnings multiple reflects an investor expectation for upside, not a negative surprise. … Continue reading

Experimental procedure shows promise for treatment of MS
Posted: Published on June 12th, 2013
In multiple sclerosis, the bodys immune system attacks and damages myelin, which is the insulating layer on nerves in the spinal cord, brain and optic nerve. Just as would happen with an electrical cord with compromised insulation, this causes the nerves to short-circuit and cease functioning properly. An international team of scientists, however, have recently reported success in the first phase of clinical trials in which MS victims immune systems were conditioned to become much more tolerant of myelin. In the study, white blood cells were obtained from nine MS-afflicted test subjects. These cells were specially processed, coupled with myelin antigens, and then injected intravenously back into their respective donors up to 3 billion of these dead, treated cells were injected into each person. When they entered the spleen, which filters dead cells from the bloodstream, both the white blood cells themselves and their myelin antigen payloads were identified by the body as being innocuous. This caused the immune system to become 50 to 75 percent less reactive to myelin, depending on the person and the number of cells injected. Importantly, the procedure lowered the immune systems response to myelin only. Some other MS treatments just lessen the strength of … Continue reading

Sanofi MS drug nears green light after pass-the-parcel marathon
Posted: Published on June 11th, 2013
* European decision on Lemtrada expected this month * 25-year journey for drug passed from company to company * Scientists frustrated by delays, worried over pricing By Ben Hirschler LONDON, June 10 (Reuters) - One of the world's longest running drug development sagas may draw to a close this month as French firm Sanofi (NasdaqGM: GCVRZ - news) hopes for a European green light for its new multiple sclerosis medicine Lemtrada. The drug's quarter-century journey from a laboratory in Cambridge (SES: E1:J91U.SI - news) , England, to a possible $1 billion-a-year seller has involved a string of pass-the-parcel deals that serve as an object lesson in complex "drug dealing" between rival companies. While Sanofi may end up with a new product to plug a hole in its medicine cabinet, the drug's slow evolution is a mixed blessing in the eyes of some doctors worried about pricing. But for the original scientists behind the antibody treatment, it has been a frustrating wait. "It's been painful," said Herman Waldmann, emeritus professor of pathology at the University of Oxford, who co-invented the drug while at the University of Cambridge. "We had to make the running to keep on convincing the pharmaceutical industry at … Continue reading

Promising Results In Early Trial of Novel MS Treatment

Copyright 2013 NPR. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required. IRA FLATOW, HOST: This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Ira Flatow. In the disease multiple sclerosis, the body's own immune cells stage a mutiny. Those cells, white cells, normally go after foreigners in the body like bacteria or other invaders that make us sick. But in MS, the immune cells go after the body itself, attacking the myelin covering that wraps around nerve cells. As that myelin gets degraded, nerve signals don't get transferred properly, and that's what leads to the symptoms of MS. For years, scientists have been trying to figure out how to stop the myelin attack, to get the body to stop going after itself. This week, researchers say they have some very early promising results for a new approach. Essentially, they have a way to teach the body not to go after itself, and a small preliminary study says the technique is at least safe to use in a larger test. Stephen Miller is professor of microbiology-immunology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He's also a director of the Immunobiology Center at Northwestern in Chicago. Welcome to … Continue reading

MS Dinner of Champions to honor/toast John Williamson on June 11
Posted: Published on June 7th, 2013
John Williamson will receive the Silver Hope Award, the highest honor presented by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society on Tuesday, June 11 at Hotel Roanoke in Roanoke. A VIP reception for the honoree, co-chairs and vice chairs will begin at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., Williamson will be toasted by Warner Dalhouse, and Harvey Brookins will present the Silver Hope Award. Master of Ceremonies will be Nicholas Conte. The MS Dinner of Champions honors outstanding community leaders as it raises funds for MS research, advocacy, and regional programs, and provides public education about multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the body. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with the disease. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being … Continue reading
