SA researchers in MS breakthrough

Adelaide University researchers are embarking on a new project which uses stem cells to treat multiple sclerosis. Source: Supplied A POTENTIAL new treatment for multiple sclerosis lies within modified adult stem cells, University of Adelaide researchers say. The researchers are embarking on a new project which uses stem cells from fat tissue to send cells with special anti-inflammatory properties directly to the damaged site in the central nervous system. MS is a progressive disease where the body attacks the central nervous system, causing nerve inflammation and scarring. It results in the impairment of motor, sensory and cognitive function. Brittany Christensen, 17, raises $1000 for Kiss Goodbye to MS campaign Director of the Centre for Molecular Pathology, Professor Shaun McColl, said treatments for MS need to control the immune response and repair the damage caused to the fatty myelin sheaths which protect the nerves. "We've already shown that adult stem cells have great potential to both control the immune response and promote repair of the central nervous system. It also prevents further damage," he said. "But the trick is getting the stem cells to the right location where they can perform this function." When stem cells are injected into the blood … Continue reading

Jack Osbourne has said that he is determined to find a cure for multiple sclerosis (MS). The former Osbournes star was diagnosed with the disease in June 2012, just two weeks after welcoming a daughter with wife Lisa Stelly. Osbourne has been seeking treatment for MS for nearly a year now, and recently revealed to E! News that he is hopeful that a cure will be found during his lifetime. "When I got diagnosed, the more research I did about it - MS overall, as a subject, as a disease - there's a lot of misconceptions and there's a lot of unknowns about it, and there wasn't anyone out that was close to my age or close to anything like me out there," he explained. The reality star continued: "I'm not saying I was trying to be the hero and wave the flag, but I was like, 'Why don't more people know about this?'... It's not a disease of age, a lot of people think it's for women in their 40s, most commonly, because that is the most common diagnosis, but it's not. "The youngest diagnosis has been of a 3-year-old. So this is a disease that affects everyone differently, … Continue reading

South Africa: CAF Announces Disciplinary Action in Doping Matters

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2013

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has received the decision of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the doping matter of Ms Amanda Sister and the Banyana Banyana stand-in Team Doctor at the time of the 2012 African Women's Championship hosted in Equatorial Guinea. Whilst CAF has reduced the standard sentence from two (2) years to one (1) year for the player, they took strong action against the Team Doctor that administered the banned substance. The Team Doctor has admitted liability and has been banned for four (4) years from participating in any football activity. SAFA has also reported the conduct of the doctor to the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS). However, the player will serve her one-year suspension which runs until 16 December 2013. "It is very unfortunate for the player but SAFA would like to warn all athletes that, in terms of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules, they are held responsible for any treatment administered to them by professionals. Medical practitioners are also warned not to place athletes at risk by administering banned substances during treatment," said SAFA CEO, Dennis Mumble. Occupational Therapists are crucial to helping people with MS stay in work, says new report

Posted: Published on May 3rd, 2013

A major report from the MS Society has called for occupational therapists to be more involved in caring for people with Multiple Sclerosis. Amongst its key recommendations it asks Governments across the UK to ensure that multi-disciplinary health and social care teams include occupational therapists, who can do so much to help people with MS stay active and help employers make appropriate adjustments. The report A lottery of treatment and care - states that occupational therapists are crucial to unlocking barriers to employment, enabling people with MS to get into and remain in work. It insists that assessments for benefits such as Personal Independence Payments (PIP) recognise the needs of people with fluctuating conditions, such as MS. Karin Bishop, Interim Head of Practice at COT said: This report highlights unacceptable inconsistencies in the care and support that people with MS receive. Access to the right support is vital and care must be tailored to suit the needs of each individual, and that is where occupational therapists skills can make a difference. Occupational therapists can help to address many of the problems highlighted in this report, providing preventative support and helping people to manage all aspects of living with MS. Occupational … Continue reading
