Amphlett, aged 53, passed away in her adopted home of New York with husband Charley Drayton. The singer, who fronted rock band Divinyls, had fought breast cancer as well as suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. Her cousin, Patricia 'Little Pattie' Thompson and family have released the following statement. Our beloved Chrissy peacefully made her transition this morning. Christine Joy Amphlett succumbed to the effects of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, diseases she vigorously fought with exceptional bravery and dignity. She passed gently, in her sleep, surrounded by close friends and family, including husband of fourteen years, musician Charley Drayton, her sister, Leigh, nephew, Matt, and cousin Patricia Thompson ("Little Pattie"). Countdown host Ian 'Molly' Meldrum was a friend of Amphlett and husband Drayton. "Its devastating news," Meldrum said today. "I absolutely adored her. Right at the start of her career with the Divinyls she also terrified me. I remember going to see them play at the Prince of Wales in Melbourne early on and she looked me … Continue reading

Alternative medicine use by MS patients now mapped

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

Apr. 19, 2013 A major Nordic research project involving researchers from the University of Copenhagen has, for the first time ever, mapped the use of alternative treatment among multiple sclerosis patients -- knowledge which is important for patients with chronic disease and the way in which society meets them. People with multiple sclerosis (MS) often use alternative treatments such as dietary supplements, acupuncture and herbal medicine to facilitate their lives with this chronic disease. This is the result of a new study of how MS patients use both conventional and alternative treatments which has been carried out by researchers from five Nordic countries. The results have been published in two scientific journals, the Scandinavian Journal of Public Health and Autoimmune Diseases. "What we see is that patients do not usually use alternative treatments for treating symptoms, but as a preventative and strengthening element," says Lasse Skovgaard, industrial PhD candidate from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Society, who has been involved in conducting the questionnaire-based study among 3,800 people with MS in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease which attacks the central nervous system, and which can lead … Continue reading

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in. Officials and supporters from the Norwich and district branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society gathered yesterday for an open day at their new base, which will provide a range of support, treatment and therapy services. The official opening of the 250,000 centre, near Norwich International Airport, follows 12 years of fundraising by volunteers and an extensive search to find larger premises in the Norwich area. The facility replaces the branchs cramped headquarters in Witard Road and was funded solely on local fundraising and donations. Officials from the MS Society branch hope to double their membership, which currently stands at 400 people from across Norfolk, with the opening of the centre at Iceni Court in Alkmaar Way, which has consulting and therapy rooms as … Continue reading

Acorda's MS drug proves to help stroke patients walk again, study finds

Posted: Published on April 17th, 2013

A phase II study proved a drug that helps multiple sclerosis patients walk can also help stroke patients walk, Medical News Today reported. Acorda Therapeutics, which makes Ampyra (dalfampridine), said patients with post-stroke deficits such as impaired walking, motor and/or sensory function and manual dexterity showed significant improvement after taking the extended release tablets. There were clear efficacy signals in the dalfampridine-ER post-stroke deficits trial, and we therefore plan to proceed with a clinical development program for this indication, said Dr. Ron Cohen, president and CEO of Acorda. A top-line analysis of the data found dalfampridine-ER improved walking for people with mobility impairment resulting from ischemic stroke. Dalfampridine-ER treatment was also associated with a positive change versus placebo on a scale of functional independence in this study. Cohen said after the company analyzes more data, it will be in touch with the Food and Drug Administration so a much larger study can be conducted. Cohen said there are more than 7 million stroke survivors in the United States, and about half of them have lasting mobility impairment, which does not benefit from any available medications. Because of this, he said the drug is desperately needed. The phase II trial involved … Continue reading
