Expert witness’s evidence on antibiotics highly significant

Dr Ciaran Macloughlin, the Galway Coroner, at Galway Courthouse where the inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar is being held. Photograph: Brenda Fitzsimons Yesterday the first expert medical witness called by coroner Dr Ciarn MacLoughlin provided the Savita Halappanavar inquest with some highly significant evidence. A consultant microbiologist at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin, Dr Susan Knowles is one of the Republics foremost experts on infections which affect pregnant women and newborn babies. Dr Knowles commented on the choice of antibiotics used as part of Ms Halappanavars treatment (see panel). She said: The aspect I have concern with is the choice of intravenous antibiotics. Her concern specifically related to the use of co-amoxiclav, because many strains of E.coli the bug that caused the septicaemia that killed Ms Halappanavar are increasingly resistant to this antibiotic. In a case such as this, she said, many centres in Ireland would add an additional antibiotic, for example gentamicin, to the co-amoxiclav, or may decide to use an entirely different, broader spectrum, antibiotic. It also emerged that all three Dublin maternity hospitals include the drug gentamicin in their protocols for the treatment of chorioamnionitis. Gentamicin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used in the treatment … Continue reading

Annette Funicello’s death raises MS awareness

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2013

The death this week of actress and one-time Disney Mouseketeer Annette Funicello from complications of multiple sclerosis raised the specter of a debilitating disease and the need for further research to one day find a cure. It serves to remind us there are many, many people in our country and around the world with MS, said Nicholas LaRocca, vice president of health-care delivery and policy research at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Were all striving for the goal of a world free of MS. But not everybody responds to treatment in the same way, so the more options there are, the better. Funicello, 70, was diagnosed with the disease in 1987 and went on to become an advocate for multiple sclerosis awareness and research. In Massachusetts, several companies have developed drugs to treat multiple sclerosis, which affects an estimated 400,000 people in the United States and 2.1 million worldwide. Biogen Idec has three such drugs: Avonex, Tysabri and, most recently, Tecfidera, which received federal approval two weeks ago. All of them are disease-modifying therapies that reduce the number of relapses and slow the progression of MS ... until we can find a cure, which is what were all committed to, … Continue reading

by Staff Report GDTnews@civitasmedia.com Gallipolis Daily Tribune GALLIPOLIS Jami Jo Cox has been named Ambassador of Walk MS: Gallipolis, 2013. Walk MS: Gallipolis is slated for 10 a.m. April 20 at Haskins Memorial Park. Funds raised during the event will benefit the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National MS Society. Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and it stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2.5 million worldwide. Cox, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003, will serve as the Walk MS team captain. MS makes some activities slightly more difficult for … Continue reading

Severe MS left Annette Funicello unable to walk, speak

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2013

Annette Funicello's husband describes how at age 70, the former entertainer had become unable to walk or speak, due to the effects of multiple sclerosis. CTV reports. By Linda Carroll After battling multiple sclerosis for decades, Annette Funicello died today from complications of the disease. That doesnt mean that MS actually killed her, says Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl, a professor in the department of neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles and director of the UCLA MS program. MS does not directly shorten the lifespan, Voskuhl explains. It doesnt kill people directly. If youve had a very severe form for a very, very long time you can have the same complications that anyone has who is immobilized. You can get pneumonia. You can get bed sores. You can have difficulty eating. These days the prognosis for the vast majority of MS patients is better than it was when Funicello was diagnosed because there are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease. There was a revolution in MS drugs in the late 90s, Voskuhl says. Those drugs dont stop the disease, but they slow it down. If you were diagnosed years ago, before there were good treatments, many brain … Continue reading
