MS Support Group Meets to Celebrate 25 Years

Posted: Published on June 27th, 2012

Multiple Sclerosis is a devastating disease. It doesn't just affect those that have it, but their loved ones as well. That is why support groups have formed all across the country, including the one that met in Princeton Tuesday evening. The Bluefield and Princeton MS Support Group met to do just that support each other. In addition, they were celebrating the group's 25 years of existence and support. Darren Ball of the National MS Society says that treatment has come a long way during that time, and there are now 8 treatments available for MS patients. The group's president, Doug Mullins, was also given special recognition for his 25 years of service to the group. Mullins says the people in this group are more than just friends, they're family as well. And although the support they give each other is important, there is one more person who Mullins thanks. "I thank God. God is the reason we are here." MS symptoms, according to Ball, can include fatigue and tingling, or even more severe symptoms such as difficulty walking, or even paralysis. If you or someone you know suffers from MS, you can contact the Blueridge Chapter of the National MS … Continue reading

Coping with MS: Ann Romney's health struggle

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012

Ann Romney was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998. When I interviewed her for Fox News at our Washington Bureau two weeks ago, she readily admitted to me how difficult the diagnosis was at first, leading to fear, uncertainty and dark times. She characterized her recurrent symptoms as including profound fatigue (which she could readily distinguish as her MS fatigue), weakness, and problems thinking clearly. She acknowledged that stress plays a major role in her ability to cope with and respond to this difficult disease. Like more than 400,000 other MS sufferers in the U.S. and 2.5 million around the world, Romney lives in anticipation of her next exacerbation, which can come at any time. In addition to fatigue, weakness, and affects on thinking, other characteristic symptoms for MS sufferers include visual loss, sensory loss, problems with balance, pain, and in up to one third of cases, wheelchair-necessitating paralysis. MS is known medically as one of our great imitators, because it can mimic the symptoms of many other neurological diseases. If you consider nerves to be like electrical wires, then MS is due to damage to the covering of the wires (myelin sheath), leading to abnormal conduction. It is now … Continue reading

Federal court backs Teva Pharmaceutical patents behind MS treatment Copaxone

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012

Shares of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. climbed Monday in the first trading day after a U.S. federal court reaffirmed patents protecting the drugmaker's biggest brand-name product, the multiple sclerosis treatment Copaxone. The Israeli company said Saturday the decision from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York covers several patents, the last of which expires in 2015, and that it prevents other drugmakers from selling their versions of the drug until then. It also said the decision should prevent the Food and Drug Administration from approving generic versions of the drug until 2014. U.S.-traded shares of the company rose 4.5 per cent, or $1.71, to close at $39.72, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.6 per cent. Teva had sued Mylan Laboratories Inc., Momenta Pharmaceuticals Inc., Sandoz Inc. and Natco Pharmaceuticals, accusing the rival companies of infringing on patents covering the drug's chemical composition, method of use and the manufacturing process behind the product. Teva is the 10th largest global pharmaceutical company, according to drug data firm IMS Health, and Copaxone is its main brand-name offering. It expects $3.8 billion in sales this year from the drug. Teva is primarily a maker of generic drugs. … Continue reading

Neil Cavuto Blasts ‘Horses’ Asses’ At MSNBC For Mocking Ann Romney’s Horseback MS Treatment

Posted: Published on June 21st, 2012

video I told myself I wouldnt butt in, Neil Cavuto told the audience today, before addressing those from a network with MS in their name over their mockery of Ann Romneys horseback riding. Romney uses horses for treating her multiple sclerosis an illness Cavuto too has, which led him to explain the legitimacy of this treatment and chide the condescending, sanctimonious twits who refuse to acknowledge the legitimacy of MS as a disease and the need to deal with its shortcomings. RELATED: Neil Cavuto Defends President Obamas Family Values And Commitment To Fatherhood Because I have MS, my comments might be taken with a grain of pity salt and more than a hint of sympathy bias. Well, guilty as charged, Cavuto admitted candidly, explaining that this was why he tried to avoid commenting, but Ive had enough of condescending commentators on another news channel, and was concerned that their comments risk being accepted by an audience that might not know the facts that well. Explaining that several medical sources find some good in using horseback riding to treat problems with walking in those with MS, he reiterated that this is a legitimate therapy not one he uses, he joked, because … Continue reading

Some facts about MS

Posted: Published on June 20th, 2012

Dear Dr. Donohue My 53-year-old son was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in September 2011. He functions quite well, has a small limp and goes to work in his office regularly. Recently, he had an MRI scan. His doctor told him: "There is one new lesion on your brain MRI. I wouldn't change anything now but recommend you come back in six months for another scan." I feel he should have more attention sooner. F.C. Answer Let me provide you and readers with a few facts on multiple sclerosis before I answer your question. As many as 350,000 Americans suffer from this illness yearly. Its onset usually begins between the ages of 20 and 50. The basic problem is a stripping away of the insulation material, myelin, from nerves that permit the transmission of information from brain to spinal cord through electric signals. Without myelin, the electric transmission isn't possible: It's short-circuited. That brings on muscle weakness, loss of sensation and the many other signs and symptoms of this disease. Current teaching holds that the body's immune system is responsible for attacking the myelin nerve covering. I'm taking it that your son suffers from the most common variety of MS, relapsing-remitting. … Continue reading
