Hundreds farewell Jaye Radisich
Posted: Published on March 24th, 2012
Former State Labor MP Jaye Radisich was given a standing ovation as she was farewelled by hundreds of mourners at Fremantle Cemetery today. Ms Radisich died last Saturday aged 35 after battling a rare kidney cancer. Among the mourners were Defence Minister Stephen Smith, State Opposition Leader Mark McGowan, former State Labor leader Eric Ripper, former State Labor MP and Vincent mayor Alannah MacTiernan, retiring Labor MP John Kobelke, former Labor and now National Party MP Vince Catania, Deputy Opposition Leader Roger Cook and Liberal MP Robyn McSweeney. Ms Radisich was remembered by friends and family as the life of the party, passionate, enthusiastic and honest. The lively former politician rose to fame when at 23 years of age she became the youngest woman ever elected to WAs Parliament. Opposition police spokeswoman Michelle Roberts spoke about Ms Radisichs remarkable victory in Swan Hills at the 2001 election when she managed an 11.7 per cent swing to win the seat for Labor. Ms Roberts said Ms Radisich had kept a promise made in her maiden speech to Parliament to keep it real and had livened up the stuffy corridors of Parliament. Ms Radisichs friend Daniel Smith delivered the eulogy saying he … Continue reading

Monkeys And Medication: The Keys To MS Cure? – Research Summary
Posted: Published on March 21st, 2012
BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). More than 400,000 Americans are suffer from MS. The disease is caused by damage to the protective covering that surrounds nerve cells, called the myelin sheath. When these nerve cells are damaged it causes nerve signals to slow down or stop completely. The nerve damage is usually caused by inflammation that occurs when the body's own immune cells attack the nervous system occurring in any area of the spinal cord, brain, and optic nerve. So far the cause of this disease is unknown, but commonly it is thought to happen because of either a virus or gene defect. People who have a family history of MS or live in an area where MS is more common might be more likely to develop this disease. SYMPTOMS: As with many diseases, symptoms vary due to the severity of each attack. Episodes may last days, weeks, or months and are usually followed with a remission. Because nerves in any part of the brain or spinal cord may be damaged, patients with multiple sclerosis can have symptoms in many parts of the body. 1. Muscle symptoms: … Continue reading

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2012
On the eve of two community MS Walks Sunday in Coral Gables and Aventura, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, South Florida Chapter is announcing a new partnership with the University of Miami medical school to treat those living with the disease. The National MS Societys partnership with the MS Center of Excellence and John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, headed by Dr. Margaret Pericak-Vance, will offer 24-hour patient care, a clinical research center, a team of neurologists, international genetic research and MS genetic registry, educational programs and more on UMs medical campus in Miami. Theres a great need for a center of comprehensive treatment mainly because the care of MS patients is very specialized, its almost become like oncology, said Dr. Kottil Rammohan, a professor of clinical neurology at the University of Miami and the director of the MS Center, which has branches in Hialeah, Kendall, Plantation and Boca Raton. The treatments are very complex and so what we hope to have is a center available for Central and South Florida but also to become a major center for Latin American patients coming through Miami as well, Rammohan added. Craig Wheeler with his wife Janine. Craig's battle with multiple sclerosis has been made eaiser since attending a Gawler foundation retreat. Photo: Angela Wylie ABOUT five years ago, Craig Wheeler was heading for a nursing home. Multiple sclerosis had paralysed his legs and was stealing his sight in cruel five-minute bursts. A range of drugs were not helping him and some had significant side effects, so he decided to go to a retreat run by the Gawler Foundation, which encourages people to overhaul their lifestyle. During the five-day-program, Mr Wheeler, now 42, was advised to eat a vegan diet (no animal products) with seafood and very low-saturated fats. He was also told to take vitamin D and omega 3 supplements, to reduce stress with exercise and meditation, and to have counselling. Advertisement: Story continues below Since then, he has stuck to the regime with medical treatment from his doctors and has had one relapse of his illness in five years. He has also regained movement in his legs and can run six laps of an oval. "Before I started the program my symptoms got worse and worse, and although some medication helped, I was relapsing every three months and doctors … Continue reading

MS pill approval will change lives
Posted: Published on March 18th, 2012
MS pill approval will change lives 10:30am Saturday 17th March 2012 in News By Amanda Williams A revoluntionary pill for MS sufferers that was trialled in Oxford was yesterday given the go-ahead by a government watchdog. Now Matt Bateman, who says the drug has transformed his life, has urged county health bosses to avoid a postcode lottery and guarantee it will be funded. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) issued new draft guidance recommending fingolimod on the NHS for some patients with a form of MS. MS affects about 900 Oxfordshire people and is caused by the bodys immune system attacking the brain and spinal cord. Every time a patient suffers a relapse, it means their immune system is being attacked a sign the disease is progressing towards disability. Most MS sufferers have to undergo twice-weekly injections to stop this progression of the disease. But the fingolimod pill, which has been trialled at the John Radcliffe, would be a solution for patients who were not seeing any benefit from the injections. Mr Bateman, 36, from Blackbird Leys in Oxford, started taking the drug in May 2009 as part of a clinical trial in the city. He discovered … Continue reading

‘MS Town Hall’ meeting is Sunday
Posted: Published on March 18th, 2012
An MS Town Hall meeting slated Sunday in Marion is designed to acquaint Southern Illinoisans with Multiple Sclerosis with services provided by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, but it also has a second purpose. Dan Friedman, director of marketing and communications for Gateway Area Chapter of the National MS Society, said the meeting also is designed to hear from people on what they want from the organization. The meeting will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at Mackies Pizza, 2704 Walton Way in Marion. Refreshments will be provided. Those planning to attend are asked to R.S.V.P. at 1-800-344-4867 or http://www.gatewaymssociety.org. The Gateway chapter covers 90 counties in the eastern half of Missouri and the southern third of Illinois; it has four offices including one in Cape Girardeau, Friedman said. He said in the 14 Southern Illinois counties surrounding Carbondale, about 350 people have been diagnosed and are living with MS. One of our challenges is to see people are served in the less-populated rural areas, Friedman said. He encourages all MS patients to attend the Town Hall with family and friends. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling … Continue reading
