Missing plane found in MS; pilot injured but alive

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2012

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Injured and disoriented, a pilot was trapped upside down in his crashed airplane for several hours Tuesday but was able to make calls on his cellphone while rescuers searched the north Mississippi woods where he went down, authorities said after finding the man alive. Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said the pilot, Greg Huggins, 49, of Memphis, Tenn., was taken to a hospital for treatment after crashing his single-engine Piper Cherokee Six when the plane ran out of fuel and went down near the border of Itawamba and Monroe counties. He was the only person aboard. "We got him out. He was living. He was shook up and cut up real bad, but he was coherent. What he's been through, it was a miracle," Cantrell said. Officials with North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo would not release Huggins' condition. FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane was about 18 miles southeast of Tupelo when the pilot reported a problem Tuesday morning. Bergen said an alert was sent to airports and authorities within a 50-mile radius of the plane's last known location at about 7:45 a.m. CST. Bergen said she couldn't say what kind of problem the … Continue reading

Saskatchewan's MS follow-up care defended by clinic

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2012

Saskatchewan's medical system does offer follow-up care for multiple sclerosis patients who have had so-called liberation therapy, says the head of of the Saskatoon MS Clinic. Dr. Katherine Knox disputed claims by advocates who accused Saskatchewan's public health-care system of not providing follow-up services to multiple sclerosis patients from the province who have travelled abroad for the controversial treatment. Knox told CBC News the Saskatoon MS Clinic regularly treats patients who have undergone liberation therapy, also known as cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI). That follow-up medical care is covered by the public health-care system, "no matter what treatment choice or alternative treatment or lifestyle choice that patients make," Knox said. What is not covered by the public system, Knox added, are extra services that are not medically necessary, such as regular scans. "That kind of investigation and treatment is currently not being provided in Canada, to my knowledge, paid by taxpayers, or paid by provincial health care systems," she said. Such scans can be offered by clinics such as the one announced on Saturday by Dr. Ruben Rajakumar, a Saskatoon-based cardiologist and retired University of Saskatchewan professor. The clinic will offer screening and follow-up care for patients with CCSVI, but those … Continue reading

MS patient advocates for better follow-up care

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2012

MS patient Michelle Walsh wants better follow-up care, in Saskatchewan, for a people trying a new therapy. (CBC) Faced with the prospect of being bedridden or in a wheelchair, Michelle Walsh went abroad for a controversial treatment she hoped would alleviate her multiple sclerosis symptoms. Walsh had the so-called liberation therapy. But when she returned home to Saskatchewan, she says she was "orphaned" in the medical system. "Right now patients are either going to the States from Saskatchewan for proper follow-up care or Ontario — and this is ridiculous," Walsh said. "That's why I finally said this is enough. If this is going to happen, then I'm going to make it happen, because I refuse to go abroad once again for a simple test that takes less than 20 minutes to make sure everything's still following smoothly." 'They need to be followed by a licensed practitioner.'—Dr. Ruben Rajakumar Walsh was planning to attend an announcement Saturday by Dr. Ruben Rajakumar, a Saskatoon-based cardiologist and retired University of Saskatchewan professor, introducing a new clinic for screening and follow-up of patients with cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, or CCSVI. CCSVI is a hypothesis put forward by Italian vascular surgeon Dr. Paolo Zamboni. His theory … Continue reading

Stem Cell Update from Panama 3 Years Later – Video

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2012

03-10-2011 13:54 I had my first stem cell treatment for Multiple Sclerosis in November 2008. After much research and education, I decided to leave the US and go to Cell Medicine in Costa Rica at the time. 3 years later the clinic has grown and consolidated their lab and facilities to Panama City. The treatment wasn't a cure, but it worked amazingly well for me and gave me a second chance at life. My MS is progressive and I will continue to turn to stem cells for ongoing treatment of my disease. Hopefully one day very soon with continuing discussions with Gov. Rick Perry and others, we will see stem cell treatments more widely available in the United States. iLoveMyNewStemCells! Here is the original post: Stem Cell Update from Panama 3 Years Later - Video … Continue reading
