Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
HAIFA, Israel, Feb. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pluristem Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq:PSTI - News) (TASE:PLTR) today announced that following preliminary discussions with several governmental authorities, it will expand its research and development efforts on an acute radiation exposure treatment. The announcement comes as governments around the world have broadened their search for easily administered and effective radiation countermeasures. Liat Flaishon, MD, PhD, recently appointed Pluristem's Director of Business Development, will lead the company's development efforts. Dr. Flaishon joins Pluristem after serving as the director of Drug Safety Risk Management in the global drug safety and pharmacovigilance department at Teva Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Flaishon received her medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, and her PhD in Immunology from The Weizmann Institute of Science. As previously announced, Pluristem's PLX cells have achieved favorable pre-clinical data in the treatment of radiation exposure. In studies conducted by Professor Raphael Gorodetsky and his team at the Biotechnology and Radiobiology Laboratory at the Sharett Institute of Oncology at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, Pluristem's placental 3D expanded cells have demonstrated efficacy as mitigators of the acute radiation syndrome (ARS) following radiation exposure in animals that were given lethal doses of radiation and 24 … Continue reading

Sanofi faces uphill struggle in MS drug market

* Sanofi (Paris: FR0000120578 - news) seen as smaller player in MS * Co excited about Lemtrada prospects - CEO * Experts say wider choice of drugs is best for patients PARIS, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Sanofi SA risks falling behind in the battle for share of the fast-growing multi-billion euro multiple sclerosis (MS) market, as rivals push ahead with revolutionary treatments while doubts remain over the French drugmaker's own drug candidates. Sanofi, which has relied on blood thinners and cancer therapies to drive sales but faces increased competition from generic drug versions, is preparing to submit two MS treatments for approval this year. But it faces an uphill battle to catch Novartis AG's Gilenya and Biogen Idec Inc (NasdaqGS: BIIB - news) 's BG-12, set to dominate a market that JPMorgan analysts see growing to $14 billion in 2015 from $9.6 billion last year. "Sanofi will remain a small player compared with Biogen or Novartis, but it will still remain on the radar screen," said Beatrice Muzard, an analyst at brokerage Natixis (Euronext: KN.NX - news) . MS, which has no cure, affects 2.5 million people worldwide. It is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous … Continue reading

Minehead carer appeals for help for MS best friend 10:00am Saturday 4th February 2012 in A CARER FROM Minehead has launched an appeal in a bid to give his wheelchair-user friend a chance of resuming a normal life by sending him abroad for medical treatment. Paul Booker, 41, was forced to give up a promising career as a DJ after being struck down with Multiple Sclerosis and now his full-time carer and best friend Philip Rattray hopes to raise £15,000 to send him overseas. Philip, 21, said: “It is getting progressively worse, that last bit of freedom he has left is going to come to an end and his life will go down the pan. “He is really, really smart – his brain is certainly in full health, but his body lets him down. It’s heartbreaking. I just want to see my best friend happy again and to help him get back on his feet.” Paul used to play at nightclubs, parties and festivals across the UK and Europe and taught young people to DJ until 2006, when the crippling neurological condition forced him to retire. After leading such an active life, he is now confined to a wheelchair and … Continue reading

Girl Cuts Cancer Mum's Hair In Emotional Clip
Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012
A video posted online of a young girl cutting her mother's hair to help her understand the trauma of breast cancer treatment has attracted thousands of viewers. Sara Duncan, 44, was diagnosed last September and wanted to help her six-year-old daughter, Lola, cope with her battle against the disease. In the video, Lola cuts her mother's hair as they laugh and chat - to help the youngster grasp what will happen during chemotherapy. When her hair is reduced to a close crop, Lola gently uses a razor to shave Ms Duncan's head, before Sara finishes the job herself. The film ends with a message asking viewers to donate to cancer charities. It was initially recorded by dad Craig as a family memento, but they decided to post the video on YouTube to raise £100,000 for 10 cancer charities. Ms Duncan told Sky News: "It's turning what could be a disaster and sad thing into 'Let's make it fun.' "You agonise over losing your hair because it's such a big part of a person's appearance." The couple have five other children - Finn, nine, 16-year-old twins Charlie and Rory, Jake, 18, and Oli, 22. Ms Duncan is currently having chemotherapy treatment. … Continue reading

Cannabis extracts may slow MS development, says study

Cannabis extracts may slow MS development, says study By Catherine Shanahan Thursday, February 02, 2012 A doctor who has treated a child as young as two for multiple sclerosis is hopeful the results of a clinical trial will show cannabis plant extracts may help slow the development of disability. Professor John Zajicek said this would mark a breakthrough in treatment of the disease in its secondary progressive stage, for which treatments are largely unavailable. Cannabinoids are proving effective in improving symptoms in the early stage, known as the "relapsing-remitting" stage. This includes reduced muscle stiffness and spasms and better bladder control in patients. "Those treatments [use of cannabinoids] have been going on for a while now and there is fairly good evidence that they work on the symptoms, but there is nothing to treat progression. We have to wait and see what the trial results will show to see if cannabinoids are effective in the second stage," he said. Prof Zajicek, chief investigator of the largest clinical trial of this nature, said the CUPID (cannabinoid use in progressive inflammatory brain disease) trial was complete and the results were being analysed. He said there were challenges in carrying out a trial … Continue reading
