Leeds mum praises ‘life saving’ MS treatment in charity video – Yorkshire Evening Post
Posted: Published on May 30th, 2017
13:07 Tuesday 30 May 2017 A mother from Leeds has spoken out about her journey with multiple sclerosis (MS) and how treatment has saved her life in a video to support the MS Societys Kiss Goodbye to MS campaign. Karen Ayres hopes her story will inspire people to raise vital funds for MS research. The 39-year-old, who teaches at Leeds University, lives in Weetwood with her partner Andrew and two children Milla, whos 4, and Sonny whos 14 months. Karen first started experiencing strange symptoms when she was just 24. She was on a night out with work colleagues and fell to the floor in a night club. Then a few weeks later while in the bathroom, she collapsed again. Though this time, she was left paralysed from the neck down Karen spent the following three months in hospital where her condition worsened. The rapid onset of symptoms made her weight drop dramatically to less than six stone. She had to be fed, washed and dressed, and her limbs encased in casts at night to prevent her bones from bending. She said: I had lost all control over her body. It was the scariest thing that you can imagine. It … Continue reading

Multiple sclerosis signs and symptoms – Wikipedia
Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017
Multiple sclerosis can cause a variety of symptoms: changes in sensation (hypoesthesia), muscle weakness, abnormal muscle spasms, or difficulty moving; difficulties with coordination and balance; problems in speech (dysarthria) or swallowing (dysphagia), visual problems (nystagmus, optic neuritis, phosphenes or diplopia), fatigue and acute or chronic pain syndromes, bladder and bowel difficulties, cognitive impairment, or emotional symptomatology (mainly major depression). The main clinical measure in progression of the disability and severity of the symptoms is the Expanded Disability Status Scale or EDSS.[1] The initial attacks are often transient, mild (or asymptomatic), and self-limited. They often do not prompt a health care visit and sometimes are only identified in retrospect once the diagnosis has been made after further attacks. The most common initial symptoms reported are: changes in sensation in the arms, legs or face (33%), complete or partial vision loss (optic neuritis) (20%), weakness (13%), double vision (7%), unsteadiness when walking (5%), and balance problems (3%); but many rare initial symptoms have been reported such as aphasia or psychosis.[2][3] Fifteen percent of individuals have multiple symptoms when they first seek medical attention.[4] Bladder problems (See also urinary system and urination) appear in 7080% of people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and they … Continue reading

New MS treatment helps Montana teacher: ‘It hit me pretty hard’ – Montana Standard
Posted: Published on May 23rd, 2017
BILLINGS Kelly Klein can lead an almost normal life. Last month, she was one of the first people in Montana to start on Ocrevus, the first drug approved by the FDA that's designed to treat patients who suffer from aggressivemultiple sclerosis. Ocrevus was approved by the FDA in March, and Klein's doctor at St. Vincent Healthcare, Kris French, cleared her to receive it in April. "Right now you can get really close to stopping (MS)," French said. "You just can't reverse the damage." And MS can be damaging. The disease attacks the body's central nervous system, disrupting the flow of information from the brain through the spine and breaking down neurological functions. Doctors are so excited about Ocrevus because it works by slowing the disease's progression and reducing the effects of some symptoms. Past treatments have worked to modify the disease itself. "It's a great medication," French said. Klein was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis on Mother's Day in 2004. "It hit me pretty hard," she said. She was in the hospital for five days, and for a while lost the ability to walk. After a round of tests, doctors told Klein she had primary progressivemultiple sclerosis, a form of the … Continue reading

How is multiple sclerosis (MS) treated? There is currently no cure for multiple sclerosis. A combination of medicines, physical, speech and occupational therapies may help you cope with and relieve your symptoms, slow the progress of the disease and maintain a good quality of life. Some medicines for MS can help relieve symptoms and treat specific problems. Other medicines can affect the long-term outcomes of the disease. Some people who have mild symptoms choose not to take certain medicines because of the risks associated with them and the possibility of serious side effects. Your doctor will talk to you about the risks and benefits of taking medicines to treat MS. Specific medicines can treat some of the common symptoms of MS. These include: During flare-ups, affected nerve areas can become inflamed. You may have pain and loss of function in parts of your body. Steroids reduce inflammation, so that you can return to normal function sooner. Some examples of steroids given for MS include prednisone (taken by mouth) and methylprednisolone (given as a shot). Steroids are usually taken for a short period of time to help with symptoms. They do not treat the long-term outcomes of MS. Interferons are a … Continue reading

Multiple Sclerosis Symptoms

The central nervous system (CNS) controls much of the body's functioning and much of this activity passes through the white matter at some point. It is not surprising, therefore, that a disease which damages white matter can produce a very wide range of symptoms. Indeed, there are few diseases with more potential symptoms than multiple sclerosis. In this section, I list many of the symptoms of MS and, in the next section, I will list some of their treatments. Few of the symptoms of MS are unique to the disease and, even if you have one or more of them, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have multiple sclerosis. However, all of these symptoms deserve medical attention and you should see a doctor if you develop any of them. I've arranged the symptoms into these groupings: Visual, Motor, Sensory, Coordination and Balance, Bowel, Bladder and Sexual, Cognitive and Others. Please remember that most people with MS won't get most of these symptoms and the ones that seem the most terrifying usually only manifest themselves in the later stages of the disease. I want to skim through each symptom at quite a high level and discuss them in more detail in … Continue reading

Stroke, Migraine, & Depression New Side Effects of Common MS Treatment, Study Finds – Pharmaceutical Processing
Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017
Researchers uncover potential risks of common MS treatment. In one of the most comprehensive studies to date, UBC researchers have identified potential adverse reactions of a commonly used multiple sclerosis drug. The study aimed to identify potential adverse events related to beta-interferon treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis by analyzing health records of over 2,000 British Columbians with multiple sclerosis between 1995 and 2008. "Once a drug is released on the market, there are very few ways to systematically monitor adverse events," said Helen Tremlett, senior author of the study and a professor in the department of medicine at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health. "Clinical trials cannot identify all adverse effects of a drug treatment partly due to small sample sizes and relatively short follow-up periods." The study found an increased risk of events such as stroke, migraine and depression, as well as abnormalities in the blood with taking beta interferon for multiple sclerosis. "Beta interferons are generally thought of as having a favorable safety profile, especially compared to the newer therapies for multiple sclerosis. And that is still the case; our study does not change that," said Tremlett, Canada Research Chair in Neuroepidemiology. "However, very few studies had … Continue reading
