CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Biogen (BIIB) announced new real-world data that show treatment with its leading multiple sclerosis (MS) therapies, TECFIDERA (dimethyl fumarate) and TYSABRI (natalizumab), early in the course of the disease may improve outcomes for people living with relapsing MS. These data were presented at the 69th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in Boston. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks and causes inflammation within the central nervous system. Initiating an appropriate disease modifying therapy soon after diagnosis has been shown to slow the physical and cognitive decline associated with MS and may prevent the accumulation of future disability, allowing people living with MS to stay active longer.1,2 The new real-world TECFIDERA and TYSABRI data presented at AAN emphasize the importance of effective treatment early in the course of ones disease, said Kate Dawson, M.D., vice president, U.S. Medical at Biogen. Researchers at the University of Exeter in the UK and the University of Alberta in Canada found large quantities of the protein Rab32 in brain tissue samples taken from people who had MS but was almost entirely absent in those without the condition. The protein can cause cells that store calcium to get too close to the mitochondria, an energy-producing membrane, causing it to misbehave, according to the research published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation. Scientists previously believed that the mitochondria played a role in MS but were unable to uncover why. The cause of the increase in Rab32 is still unknown, but researchers suspect a defect at the base of the cell could be responsible. Bob King has lived with multiple sclerosis for 38 years and tried different treatments, including a stem cell transplant in Panama. Now he sees Dr. Heidi Crayton at the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Greater Washington for treatment. Its quite a bit worse now than it was then, said King. But now there is a new drug, approved by the FDA just two weeks ago, to address his progressive form of MS. Its called Ocrevus. The first drug to treat an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis has hit the market. Click here to listen to an excerpt from the conversation. The FDA approved the drug, sold as Ocrevus, two weeks ago. The approval comes after a series of clinical trials across the nation, including at the University of South Floridas Multiple Sclerosis Center in Tampa. Health News Floridas Stephanie Colombini talked with Dr. Janice Maldonado, Assistant Professor of Neurology at the center to learn more about Ocrevus and its development. Heres some highlights from their conversation: MALDONADO: Multiple sclerosis has two different presentations in which [Ocrevus] was tested. The relapsing form of MS is the form in which patients will have events that take away neurologic function, meaning transient times where they lose function in a limb, their vision, etc. The drug was tested in patients with the relapsing form of MS; and in the other form of MS, which is less common, it occurs in 10-15% of the MS population, and thats the primary-progressive form of MS. This new MS treatment comes with a hefty price $65,000 a year. It will be on the market in the next two weeks. Mike Miller was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis almost 10 years ago. It started with changes in his vision. It took a few years, and I went numb from the waist down, said Miller. He is one of the first patients in the country to receive the new FDA approved drug called Ocrevus. The drug treats relapsing MS, which is the most common form and also primary progressive MS, a severe form of the disease. This is first drug ever approved for that.
