Alternative treatment (CAM) for MS facts CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) is care provided in addition (integrative medicine) to or instead of traditional or standard medical practices. This group of therapies is wide-ranging, and includes: Some people who seek out alternative medicine feel that conventional therapy has not successfully controlled their symptoms, or that the potential side effects associated with traditional therapy aren't acceptable. People with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) start out with another type of MS -- relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. If you've been diagnosed with SPMS you may have had relapsing-remitting MS for a decade or more. That's when you may begin to feel a shift in your disease. The changes are often not easy to recognize. But you may notice that your relapses may not seem to fully go away. Most people with relapsing-remitting MS -- about 80% -- eventually get secondary progressive MS. The relapses and remissions that used to come and go change into symptoms that steadily get worse. The shift typically begins 15 to 20 years after youre first diagnosed with MS. Because multiple sclerosis is such a complex disease, it can be hard to spot the changes that signal SPMS, even for health professionals. Doctors often wait at least 6 months before they diagnose SPMS. Relapsing-remitting MS can be unpredictable, but theres usually a pattern of clear attacks followed by times of recovery. Treatments for Multiple Sclerosis The year 1993 saw the release of the first disease-modifying drug, Betaseron, for multiple sclerosis. By the turn of the century, three other disease-modifying drugs had also been approved. Now with more than 10 products are available, patients not only have treatments but treatment options. It is important to note that none of the currently approved disease-modifying agents are not a cure for MS. However, all of these products can alter the course of the disease by decreasing the number and severity of relapses, by slowing the progression of the disease, and by reducing the accumulation of new lesions. MS Treatment Guidelines Research demonstrates that potentially irreversible axonal damage may occur early in relapsing-remitting MS. These therapies appear to be more effective in preventing new lesions than in repairing old lesions. Based on these findings, it is the consensus of researchers and clinicians with expertise in MS that the following treatment guidelines be followed: Therapy with a disease-modifying drug should be initiated as early in the disease course as possible. Before beginning treatment, you should discuss the potential benefits and risks associated with Rebif with your healthcare provider. Rebif can cause serious side effects. Multiple sclerosis drugs can alter the course of multiple sclerosis by slowing the progression of the disease. And since my diagnosis, I have heard more than once that I picked a great time to have multiple sclerosis because of the variety of MS drugs now out on the market. Betaseron, Copaxone, Avonex and others work to modify the disease, but are all different from one another to some degree. Before working with your doctor to choose an MS drug that is right for you, you should review the differences in these medications carefully. It is just since the mid-1990s that there has been any treatment for multiple sclerosis itself prior to this, doctors and patients relied on corticosteroids to shorten relapses, medications to address different symptoms, and physical and occupational therapy to adjust to and slow disability. Instead, I want to provide some information to help you decide if Avonex is the right choice for you as you consider the various existing disease-modifying therapies (DMT). I know that the decision-making process around MS treatment can be confusing and stressful, with the drug companies presenting information on colorful websites with testimonials from smiling patients who swear by their drug of choice. My goal is to give you the practical information that I was interested in when I was trying to make a decision about which MS treatment to start. Avonex: The Bottom Line Avonex (Interferon beta-1a) provides the lowest dose of all the interferons (30mcg/week, while Rebif is 44mcg 3 times/week). There is some evidence that higher-dose interferons may be more effective in some patients, and many doctors switch their patients to Rebif if they have several relapses on Avonex.
