County women walk to raise awareness, funds for MS
Posted: Published on April 7th, 2015
Lisa Martin and Kati Townsley, both Carroll County residents, will be participating in Walk MS in Westminster April 19. The event is one of many designed and organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to raise funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis research, in the hopes of one day finding a cure for the disease. The two women, who met in October 2014 while serving on the leadership committee for the walk, are united by a common battle: they are both fighting Multiple Sclerosis. But while their diagnoses are the same, their individual journeys with the disease have been unique. Martin, 24, of Manchester, said her first symptoms of MS began in 2009 with sensations of tingling and numbness, and eventually, loss of vision in her left eye, which later returned. She went to the doctor and expressed concerns that it may be MS, a disease she was familiar with because her aunt had been diagnosed with the chronic disease in the early 1990s. But her doctor thought it was more likely that she had Lyme disease and treated her with antibiotics, Martin said. Her symptoms did improve somewhat, but she never regained full health. Townsley, 37, of Westminster, said … Continue reading

MS sufferer to run London Marathon in aid of treatment centre
Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2015
A woman who suffers from multiple sclerosis is to take on the London Marathon just because she can. Jane Perry, of Cornwall Road, North Harrow, was diagnosed in 1995 with the condition, whichaffects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord and causes problems with muscle movement, balance and vision. The following year the BBC director started going to the MS Therapy Centre in Harrow for high dose oxygen treatment, which involves breathing oxygen under pressure in a decompression chamber. She moved to Harrow to be near the centre in 2005, andten years since her diagnosis, the 51-year-old says she plans to run the London Marathon in aid of the glorified scout hut centre, in Watford Road, Harrow, just because I can. She added: I am more likely to fall over, butI used to fall over a few times a year just walking. In the past four years I've been running five miles, three times a week, and I have not fallen over once whilewalking. Running improves balance and I wear knee pads and rugby protection head gear in case I fall which may look silly but works for me. The HDOT centre in Harrow was set up in the … Continue reading

Super nurse who cared for family's poorly children is nominated for award
Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2015
THE mother of two Bournemouth children needing extensive hospital treatment has nominated their nurse for a national award. The Daily Echo reported in November that Gabrielle Archers three-year-old son Isaac suffered life-threatening complications after contracting E coli, spending more than a month in hospital. Ms Archer, who lives with her family in Boscombe, received the news in 2012 that her then one-year-old daughter Isabella was suffering with juvenile arthritis. She was petrified, unable to walk and in constant pain, said Ms Archer. She had been poked and prodded so many times it was a struggle for anyone to get close. She could not have physio as she would just scream at her therapist. That fear disappeared after they met Sarah Hartfree, a paediatric nurse at Southampton Childrens Hospital. And when Isaac was being treated at the hospital last year Ms Hartfree was there again to offer support. Ms Archer continued: We were inpatients for six weeks and Sarah would come and check on Isaac and me, as well as popping in to examine Bellas legs as I was unable to make appointments. The family is so grateful for Ms Hartfrees help that they have nominated her for the Yakult Patients … Continue reading

Los Angeles County settles medical malpractice case for $4M
Posted: Published on April 1st, 2015
By - Associated Press - Wednesday, April 1, 2015 LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County has agreed to pay $4.5 million to a man left paralyzed after treatment at County/USC Medical Center. The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1NBqJsx) the Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday in favor of the settlement with Justin Malone. In addition to the payment, the settlement calls for the county to waive Malones estimated $790,000 in treatment costs. Malone was left paralyzed in 2011 after undergoing surgery at County/USC to repair a stent-graft installed at another hospital following a motorcycle crash a year earlier. The newspaper says the county has since implemented a corrective action plan. It includes improved transition of care between emergency and in-hospital services and better communication among service providers. ___ Information from: Los Angeles Times, http://www.latimes.com/ Original post: Los Angeles County settles medical malpractice case for $4M … Continue reading

Speedway clerk gets only medical costs for back bruised in attack
Posted: Published on March 31st, 2015
A Speedway L.L.C. sales clerk who suffered a compensable back bruise when she was assaulted on the job is not entitled to vocational rehabilitation services or a functional capacity evaluation, West Virginias Supreme Court of Appeals has ruled. Janet L. Richardson suffered significant bruising on her back after being repeatedly shoved against a metal sink at work by an attacker on Aug. 29, 2011, court records show. The claims administrator found that Ms. Richardson suffered a compensable back contusion and determined that she was eligible only for necessary medical treatment and expenses. A board-certified family nurse practitioner released her to return to work on Sept. 3, 2011, without restrictions, according to records. However, an MRI of her lumbar spine taken sometime after Sept. 3, 2011 and before Dec. 29, 2011 revealed multilevel degenerative disc disease and herniations, according to records. As a result, the nurse practitioner placed Ms. Richardson on light-duty work and restricted her from lifting more than 10 pounds or standing for more than two hours during the work day. Speedway said it wasnt able to accommodate the restrictions, and Ms. Richardson stopped working in the latter half of 2011. A physician retained by Speedway to conduct an … Continue reading

Timonium woman, and family 'dream team,' gear up for Walk MS
Posted: Published on March 30th, 2015
When Michelle Golberg steps out for this year's Walk MS, she won't be alone. The MS Dream Team, two dozen family and friends of her mother and cousin, both of whom have multiple sclerosis, will accompany her. Golberg believes the effort made and the money raised benefits research on MS, if not to find a cure for the disease of the central nervous system, then to come up with treatment options that ameliorate the often debilitating symptoms. "Both sides of the family are involved. It's great to have so many people coming together, to walk with me," said Golberg, 30, a Timonium resident, married to Billy Golberg. She has walked in MS benefits for the last nine years, the last two for National MS Society, Maryland Chapter. Last year, the MS Dream Team raised about $8,000, with Golberg herself accounting for almost $1,300. This year's Annual Walk MS will be held on Sunday, April 12 at Hunt Valley Towne Centre, off Interstate 83, with registration at 8 a.m. and the walk at 9 a.m. The walk will wend its way from the shopping area of the outdoor mall to Bonnie Blink, the Maryland Masonic Home. This is a new venue … Continue reading
