The drug Lemtrada was initially denied approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration but the decision was reversed several months ago, after a big outcry from the MS patient community. Lisa Capps was excited to try the new treatment. She'll spend the week hooked up to an intravenous treatment of Lemtrada for about seven hours a day for five days. However, she believes the time spent will be worth it. Other treatments for MS haven't worked for her and said she believes the new treatment could give a fighting chance. "This was the newest thing out there and what they call the closest to a cure that we can get to MS right now," said Capps. Capps was first diagnosed about a year ago, shortly after he daughter was born. "I have to walk with a cane now and I also have cognitive problems, so I have difficulty thinking, focusing, holding attention," she said. Publisher Penguin pulls Belle Gibson cook book The Whole Pantry

Belle Gibson, creator of the app The Whole Pantry Photo: Jeffrey Glorfeld Publishing giant Penguin will pull Belle Gibson's debut cook book after the author failed to defend accusations of falsely claiming to have cancer and explain why she withheld charitable donations. But Penguin refuses to say when it first became concerned about the accuracy of the "inspirational" story used to promote the Melbourne businesswoman's book and app. Fairfax Media has been told that Ms Gibson was called into Penguin's offices to go over her cancer story, detailed in the extensive preface to The Whole Pantry, just weeks before its release last October. Sources said Ms Gibson described the meeting - in which she was put in front of a video camera and repeatedly asked about her background and medical condition - as an "interrogation". Advertisement The publisher has previously admitted never fact checking Ms Gibson's story, which claims healthy living and natural therapies helped her treat multiple terminal cancers. Ms Gibson has so far offered no evidence to support her claims of surviving cancers after rejecting conventional treatment.Former friends and leading medical experts have cast strong doubt over her story and purported diagnoses. After further questions from Fairfax Media on … Continue reading

Stem Cell Treatments for Multiple Sclerosis

Posted: Published on March 14th, 2015

As all patients with MS are aware, the currently available treatments do nothing to cure the disease or repair the damage that it does. At their best, todays crop of disease modifying drugs (DMDs) quiet the disease, thereby improving the quality of life for many of the patients taking them, especially those suffering from relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. However, many of these drugs carry with them risky side effect profiles, and though the newest compounds represent advances over their predecessors, patients are crying out for revolution, not evolution. Stem cells could represent the revolution patients so fervently desire. Because of their ability to transform into almost any type of cell in the human body, stem cells may hold the key to achieving one of the holy grails of modern medicine, the regeneration and repair of damaged tissues. For MS patients, this could potentially mean the reversal of disability, and with it the long dreamt of disposal of wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. We are still a long way from that lofty goal, however, but the first few steps along the path to that salvation are currently being taken. Though stem cell research is advancing in laboratories worldwide, the science of using … Continue reading

Human rights groups to UN: Arroyo repackaging herself as pitiful victim

Posted: Published on March 14th, 2015

It is the height of irony that Ms. Arroyo is now complaining over violations of her civil and political rights, when she enjoys the most special treatment of detained persons under the Aquino administration. By JANESS ANN J. ELLAO Bulatlat.com MANILA Groups of human rights advocates and peoples lawyers wrote to the United Nations saying that former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is repackaging herself as the pitiful victim, in light of a bid to get her out of detention. British lawyer Amal Alamuddin-Clooney, wife of Hollywood actor George Clooney reportedly filed the complaint before the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UN WGAD) about the violations of Arroyos rights as a detainee. So far, only Arroyos camp has confirmed this report. The British lawyer has yet to issue a statement. The National Union of Peoples Lawyers, through its secretary general Edre Olalia, sent a letter to Vladimir Tochilovsky, chair rapporteur of the UN WGAD, expressing grave concern over Arroyos bid to be released. At the obvious behest of her local lawyers, Mrs. Arroyos running to the UN WGAD is essentially repackaging a violator of human rights into a pitiful victim, Olalia said. Cristina Palabay, secretary general of the Alliance for … Continue reading

The potent stimulant, made up of harsh chemicals that can cause immediate psychosis in users, has taken over from alcohol as the previous number one problem in the Moorabool region. Australian Community Support Organisation (ACSO) chief executive Karenza Louis-Smith said while alcohol was still the number one problem in Ballarat, ice had quickly climbed to number two. Twenty five per cent of people in Ballarat are seeking treatment for ice and about 35 per cent of people are seeking treatment for alcohol, Ms Louis-Smith said. While its not number one in Ballarat, it has jumped to number two very quickly and its growing rapidly. She said it would not be long before ice topped the list. You … Continue reading

Belle Gibson supporters demand refunds for app, recipe book

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

Angry customers who purchased Belle Gibson's healthy lifestyle food app and recipe book are demanding refunds amid claims she may have fabricated her cancer survival story to help develop a business. Ms Gibson, who founded The Whole Pantry app, which is marketed as the world's first health, wellness and lifestyle app and has been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times, is also facing claims she failed to deliver on promised donations to several charities. The 26-year-old built her wellness empire on the basis of having survived brain cancer for five years and and other life-threatening cancers, shunning traditional medicine in favour of wholefood and natural remedies. In 2013, she launched an Instagram blog, introducing herself as a young mother who had moved from Perth to Melbourne in mid-2009 to seek medical treatment for a 'malignant, terminal form of brain cancer'. She quickly developed a global band of followers as she documented her cancer journey, and repeatedly claimed a natural and holistic approach had cured her of the insidious disease. Ms Gibson went onto develop the app, The Whole Pantry, which promotes natural therapies, healthy eating and a wholesome lifestyle, and has reportedly been downloaded 300,000 times at $3.79. It's success … Continue reading

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2015

By Tracy Townsend Monday March 9, 2015 6:17 PM COLUMBUS, Ohio - A local man is the first person in Ohio to use a new treatment for Multiple Sclerosis. MS is the leading cause of disability in young adults. Shawn Bollinger was a senior in high school when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. "I can't really play sports anymore, said Bollinger. He used to play baseball but says hes just not coordinated enough now. The disease disrupts the central nervous system and the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Shawn has an aggressive form called Relapsing MS. "It starts tingling, and I go numb and I'm usually numb for a couple of weeks, he says. Each one's different. There's been some that have been a lot more difficult than others, added his mother, Carrie Ford. The attacks are so severe they've broken through four different drug therapies designed to stop them. Shawn and his mother says there's hope in a recently FDA approved drug called Alemtuzumab. Ohio Health neurologist Dr. Aaron Boster was involved in the clinical trials of the drug. He's treated Shawn from the start and calls the new treatment transformative. … Continue reading
