By Sarah Hale on May 30, 2013 in Alpine, Featured, News The Lincoln County Planning and Zoning Commission failed to approve a Planned Unit Development master plan for the Blind Bull area of Greys River. The action took place Wednesday, May 29 at the regular Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting in Cokeville. Following presentations by Planning Director John Woodward and Mark Nicoll, representing the Blind Bull Meadows Project, a public hearing on the project was held. A crowd of concerned citizens participated in the discussion sharing either concern about or support for the project. At the close of the hearing, the Planning and Zoning Commission failed to approve the master plan in a tied vote, two in favor and two opposed. Blake Nield and Val Clement voted against the approval. Robert Zakotnik and Roger King voted in favor. Scott Moyes was absent from the meeting. The proposal will go before the Lincoln County Commissioners on Wednesday, June 5 at 9 a.m. in Kemmerer. May 25, 2013 redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online Federal and state health officials are warning health care providers against using anti-inflammatory steroid injections from Main Street Family Pharmacy in Newbern, Tennessee after seven patients developed abscesses following treatment with the substance. According to CNNs Michael Martinez, the compounding pharmacy has been placed on probation and voluntarily recalled the steroid preservative free methylprednisolone acetate (80 mg/mL) or MPA in at least 11 states. The move comes after five patients in Illinois and two more in North Carolina developed abscesses following injection. The Tennessee Department of Health, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are all investigating Main Street Family Pharmacy, and state health officials report that the facility is currently on probation following a recent inspection, Martinez said. Authorities told CNN that no cases of meningitis or other life-threatening infections had been reported. Out of an abundance of caution, the FDA recommends that health care providers not administer any products labeled as sterile from Main Street and quarantine them until further guidance is provided, the agency said in a statement Friday. Previously researchers had found that patients randomly assigned to the web-based pharmacy care did better than those who used a patient website but had no extra help or were only trained to monitor their blood pressure at home. The new findings suggest some of those benefits may hold up over the long run - even after patients stop messaging with their pharmacists, researchers said. Hayden Bosworth, who studies treatment adherence at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, said there's been a lot of interest in how to help patients stick more closely to their blood pressure and cholesterol medications, for example. "From a health care plan perspective, these interventions are expensive and we need to look more at the sustainability of the effects and look at it long term," said Bosworth, who wasn't involved in the new research. On March 20, 2013, Derrell Milo Andersen returned to his Heavenly Father after saying goodbye for the last time to his loving family here on earth. He was 86. Derrell was born April 2, 1926, to Milo and Catherine Collings Andersen in Fairview. He was the youngest of four children. Derrell was always a hard worker, but he still found time to enjoy nature on the back of his horse, Tony, in the mountains above the familys homesteads in Auburn and Grover. He and his family enjoyed participating in games and activities, and held fond memories of working together as a family. After graduating high school, Derrell served an LDS church mission in Denmark. Several years after his return, he moved to Salt Lake City where he worked for the Utah State Road Commission. The Star Valley Braves, carried by strong performances in the sprints, distance and throwing events edged Powell 147.0 to 136.0. Cody was third with 112.0 team points while Jackson was close behind with 110.0. The Braves got three championship performances out of senior Reno Averill who took the 100 meter, 200 meter and triple jump events. Averill placed second in the long jump to Lymans Bobby Wingeleth. Ryan Brough was perhaps the surprise of the meet as he edged out the competition by just 0.2 seconds in the 110 hurdles to win the event and then duplicated the win in the 300 meter hurdles as well. David Livingston placed first in the 400 meter run and was second to team mate Averill in the 200. He also placed second in the 800 meter run. There are those close to me who will call me a hypocrite for this column. Those who have heard my biting comments about soccer and its ilk in my teen years and early 20s. I have four brothers. That wont help either. But apparently Ive come full circle. Im about to vigorously defend the sport I once mocked. Thats right. Soccer. The hard-flopping, hooligan-creating sport of casual World Cup watchers and die-hard pub-fighters alike. But I do have to differentiate a bit. Not just soccer. But Wyoming soccer specifically. Or at least the cold weather variety. This past week, a group of fancy coffee-drinking sand castle builders from Costa Rica decided to protest their loss to the USA after the entire second half was played in the snow. You know, that stuff thats outside here in the valley about nine months out of the year. It was words like ludicrous and debacle and some like it that caught my eye. Apparently they think it not only wasnt fair that they played in the snow (and lost) but that it somehow diminished the noble lineage of the game itself. Doctors love scientific explanations for how things work. That is why they are quick to prescribe medications for a variety of conditions. Food and Drug Administration approval provides reassuring evidence of effectiveness. Dietary supplements, herbs and home remedies rarely have scientific support and usually lack an explanation for the way they work. That may be why it is hard for physicians to recommend such treatments. There is, however, a growing body of scientific research supporting the use of beet juice to lower high blood pressure. Investigators even have a mechanism to explain how beetroot (Beta vulgaris) works to help control hypertension (Hypertension online, April 15, 2013). Scientists knew that a natural compound called nitrite in the bloodstream helps blood vessels relax and lowers blood pressure. But how? And does this work in people with hypertension as well? To find out, they did research in rats that develop hypertension spontaneously. They identified an enzyme called xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR) in the red blood cells called erythrocytes. The ubiquitous blue-toned TV ads for Viagra look downright tame compared with Pfizer's latest gambit for the impotence remedy. Pfizer is now selling the drug directly from the official Viagra website. Men still need a prescription for the diamond-shaped blue pills. But instead of going to the pharmacy in person, or taking their chances buying from an online pharmacy of unknown repute, men will be able to buy Viagra from the maker of the drug itself and have it shipped to their homes. To be clear, Pfizer isn't getting into the pharmacy business. The CVS drugstore chain will take care of processing and fulfillment.
