According to Mayor Kennis Lutz, the budgeting process will begin in March. We will put together our first budget and have the first reading in April, he said. Then if we need to we can break it down further and hold some workshops. We do have some money saved up and weve got some debt paid off. Its nice to have a little money left over at the end of the day. According to Lutz, as the town council works on the budget for the coming year, the question that will be asked first is what does the town need? Once we know what our needs our and have budgeted to cover those needs then we can work on everything else, he said. According to Lutz, the town will continue to look for ways to cut costs and effectively manage town funds while at the same time providing a good level of service to its residents. By Sarah Hale on Feb 28, 2012 in News, Thayne An agreement has been reached between the Town of Thayne and the Lincoln County Commissioners regarding use of the gym in the Star Valley Community Complex. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Lincoln County Commissioners this month. The MOU is for one year of use relating to Thaynes recreational programs. The document outlines that due to the public benefit of the Thayne recreation programs, [the] county will not charge rent to Thayne for Thaynes use of the building. The county will provide an operable gymnasium building for recreational activities such as basketball and volleyball, the MOUstates. The county will generally maintain and clean the Star Valley Community Complex, including maintenance and repair of the plumbing and light fixtures. The county will provide regular snow removal services of the parking areas and walks as the county is able. However, the Star Valley Community Complex may not be the countys highest priority for snow removal. The agreement further outlines that the county will not supply any equipment such as balls, uniforms, whistles or other such equipment that may be necessary to carry out the recreational activities. In the middle of February, the Star Valley Independent celebrated a birthday, one that dates back to 1901 when the newspaper first began consistent production. Since that time, the Independent has not missed a weekly edition. Take a look back 25, 50, 75 and 100 years ago during this same week of the calendar year and see what made the pages in the eyes of the writers and editors. 25-years ago: Following the conclusion of the 49th legislature in Cheyenne earlier this week, Representative Alan Stauffer said he was disappointed that the states spending wouldnt be scaled back further . . . at the 1980 level in order to balance the budget. Wyomings unemployment rate for January was 10.6 percent, up from Decembers 9.7 percent. Januarys rate was the highest recorded in the state since February 1963. Over 100 Lincoln County Republicans gathered on Saturday in Cokeville for the biannual Caucus, said Marti Halverson, Lincoln County Republican Party State Committeewoman. The work of the caucus-goers included the development of Platforms and Resolutions, documents which reflect the broad principles of the Republican party and stands on the issues of the day. These documents will be ratified at the March 10th Lincoln County Republican Party Convention, then sent up to the state party for inclusion in the Wyoming Republican Platform. Areas of discussion included Energy, Education, Health and Society, Defense and Foreign Policy, Land, Agriculture and the Environment and Jobs and the Economy. Those in attendance also participated in a straw poll, or an unofficial vote for the Republican Presidential nominee. The straw poll heavily favored candidate, Mitt Romney, who took 75 votes. By Dahl Erickson on Feb 25, 2012 in Featured, Sports In a season that was all about trying to made adjustments and maximize scoring potential, the Braves did just that with a stellar Saturday in Casper as they compiled 195.0 team points to hold off Lander who had 190.0 and take home a third place trophy.    The Powell Panthers led wire to wire in Casper and finished with 243.5 points while Douglas was second with 215.0.  After placing third in the 3A West Regional a week ago, the Braves clawed in front of both Lander and Worland  to bring home some hardware that may not have been the highest finish in Star Valley’s storied history, but was very well earned. Individually, Mitchell Heap and T.J. Guild controlled their respective matches to claim state championships, the first for each senior.  Heap defeated his second consecutive Buffalo wrestler with a 7-0 decision over Jonathon Land.  It was the second consecutive final for Heap who joins brother Hayden with a state title. Guild at 132 earned a trip to their respective finals.  Three other Braves, Gabe Waldron at 106, Devin Semadeni at 145 and Marshall Watkins a 182 advanced to the semi-finals but were defeated and will wrestle Saturday for a medal.  Heap went through the first round via forfeit and then pinned both Connor Warner of Worland and Lance Lucas of Wheatland.  It is the second consecutive final for Heap who lost 4-0 to Cheyenne Central’s Bryce Meredith last season as a junior.   Kennington claimed his second consecutive regional championship last week.  He finished fifth a year ago at state but was able to advance to the 2012 finals with a pin over Jesse Bishop of Pinedale, followed up with a 10-0 major decision over Justin Polkowske of Torrington.   Kennington then knocked off Buffalo’s Taylor Bell by decision to make the championship.
