Mason: Support network keeps Parkinson ‘s patient grounded
Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013
COMMUNITY TREASURES BY LUANN MASON Friends help us cope when challenging times invade our lives. That's why Mary Come has Wally, Willy, Parker and Arthur. Their uniqueness sets them apart from anyone or anything else and they cannot be duplicated, according to Come. Yet no matter how much they dominant her days, and oftentimes nights for that matter, Wally, Willy, Parker and Arthur will never surpass the help and support she said she has from her husband, Joe. They met on a blind date and have remained together for 46 years. "I have a great support system," the 64-year-old Shelby County native said. "It starts with Joe. He makes me keep busy." Statistically, as many at 1 million Americans live with Parkinson's disease, which the Parkinson's Disease Foundation reports is more than the combined number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease. In addition, foundation statistics show that about 60,000 American's are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease each year. That, however, does not reflect the thousands of cases that go undetected. Parkinson's involves a breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, although, scientists are unsure why this breakdown occurs. Come was diagnosed in the fall of … Continue reading

The National Parkinson Foundation Launches the Whatever It Takes to Beat Parkinson ‘s Campaign
Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013
--Campaign Begins During Parkinson's Awareness Month-- MIAMI, April 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) announced the launch of the Whatever It Takes to Beat Parkinson's campaign, a national movement to raise awareness and empower people affected by Parkinson's to make positive choices for their health and wellbeing. The campaign launch coincides with Parkinson's Awareness Month, during April. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130401/DC85828) Parkinson's disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects one million Americans and four to six million people worldwide. As there is no cure, lack of information about the disease regarding best treatment and care can drastically impact quality of life. "Every person with Parkinson's should know that they can help fight the impact of the disease," stated Joyce Oberdorf, NPF's President and CEO. "It is never too late to see improvements in one's daily life. This campaign brings to light the many ways that anyone can take action, and arms them with the resources they need to live their best life with Parkinson's. It speaks to the core of our mission to improve care, and improve lives." The centerpiece of the Whatever It Takes to Beat Parkinson's campaign is a graphic mosaic of NPF's blue "P" … Continue reading

Book advises patients how to ‘win’ against Parkinson ‘s
Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013
In this April 18, 2011 file photo, Dr. Michael Okun talks with former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno during the grand opening of the University of Florida Center for Movement Disorders and Neurorestoration. He is the author of "Parkinson's Treatment: Ten Secrets to a Happier Life." The body has its own shared, universal language and what it communicates during Parkinson's disease and how to best cope with those messages is the subject of a new book by a University of Florida physician that is traveling the world. The book, Parkinson's Treatment: Ten Secrets to a Happier Life, by Dr. Michael Okun, co-director of the Center for Movement Disorders, is being translated into more than 20 languages by many of Okun's own colleagues and students. The backyard garage project, as Okun calls it, is also the culmination of his bedside experience in treating Parkinson's disease patients from around the world a role Okun likens to cabinet-level minister reporting to the patient. I feel very strongly that a doctor should not be paternalistic, he said. When you develop a bond with patients, and they realize you're there to share knowledge, the vast majority of patients are going to come with you. Carol … Continue reading

Shedding light on early Parkinson ‘s disease pathology
Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2013
Apr. 1, 2013 In a mouse model of early Parkinson's disease (PD), animals displayed movement deficits, loss of tyrosine-hydroxylase (TH)-positive fibers in the striatum, and astro-gliosis and micro-gliosis in the substantia nigra (SN), without the loss of nigral dopaminergic neurons. These findings, which may cast light on the molecular processes involved in the initial stages of PD, are available in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. "The most intriguing finding of our study was the lack of a significant decrease of TH levels in the SN of the low-dose MPTP-treated mice, suggesting that this treatment does not induce a direct loss of nigral dopaminergic neurons," says Joost Verhaagen PhD, lead investigator of the study. "These findings appear to support the 'dying back' hypothesis of PD, which proposes that the TH-positive terminal loss in the striatum is the first neurodegenerative event in PD, which later induces neuronal degeneration in the SN." Dr. Verhaagen is Head of the Workgroup on Neuroregeneration at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and Professor at the Free University in Amsterdam. The neurotoxin MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) was used to induce the degenerative changes. Chronic 5 week administration of 25 mg/kg MPTP combined with probenecid (250 mg/kg), … Continue reading

Parkinson ‘s disease protein gums up garbage disposal system in cells
Posted: Published on March 31st, 2013
Mar. 28, 2013 Clumps of -synuclein protein in nerve cells are hallmarks of many degenerative brain diseases, most notably Parkinson's disease. "No one has been able to determine if Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites, hallmark pathologies in Parkinson's disease can be degraded," says Virginia Lee, PhD, director of the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. "With the new neuron model system of Parkinson's disease pathologies our lab has developed recently, we demonstrated that these aberrant clumps in cells resist degradation as well as impair the function of the macroautophagy system, one of the major garbage disposal systems within the cell." Macroautophagy, literally self eating, is the degradation of unnecessary or dysfunctional cellular bits and pieces by a compartment in the cell called the lysosome. Lee, also a professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and colleagues published their results in the early online edition of the Journal of Biological Chemistry this week. Alpha-synuclein (-syn ) diseases all have clumps of the protein and include Parkinson's disease (PD), and array of related disorders: PD with dementia , dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy. In most of these, -syn forms insoluble aggregates of … Continue reading

Doctors use deep brain stimulators to fight Parkinson ‘s disease
Posted: Published on March 29th, 2013
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- For decades researchers have been working to understand the underlying causes of Parkinson's disease. It's a serious neurological disorder associated with uncontrollable shaking and other symptoms. But now, Bay Area researchers have unlocked new clues, by tapping into the brains of living patients. Philip Starr, M.D., is a neurologist at UCSF and has tapped into some serious brain power, in the fight against Parkinson's disease, and it came directly from his patients. They were volunteers, already undergoing brain surgery for symptoms of the disease. "We have patients awake with local anesthetic in the scalp so they don't feel pain. So, we have access directly to the human brain in a way that is rare," Starr said. "And we can record from deep in the brain and from the surface of the brain," Hemptinne said. They say normally, cells at the brain's surface work together temporarily to perform a specific task. But in the Parkinson's patients, the switch didn't turn off. "And what we found in Parkinson's disease, the brain cells are inappropriately working together all the time. So, they have an inappropriate synchronization," Starr said. Causing familiar symptoms like uncontrollable shaking. But the team believes that … Continue reading

Ashland group prepares for Parkinson ‘s awareness month
Posted: Published on March 27th, 2013
A local group is increasing its outreach starting next month to better educate people on the effects of Parkinson's disease. The Ashland Parkinson's Support Group will have two displays set up at the community center and the public library in April for Parkinson's Awareness Month. "We want to share that this is a serious disease that needs energy put into it to find a cause and a cure," said Martha Budding, the group's coordinator. The displays will include posters, fliers and facts about Parkinson's, a degenerative movement disorder. According to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, as many as 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson's annually. Founded a year and a half ago, the Parkinson's Support Group meets once a month at the community center. Speakers present different Parkinson's-related topics, such as treatment and resources. As many as 20 people attend the monthly presentations, and the group also hosts two exercise programs a week for people with Parkinson's. "We are beginning to see the benefits of the exercises and the topics we have," Budding said. "We are learning more and we are more empowered than we were before." Local resident Malcolm Smart is putting the library display together, which Library Director Paula … Continue reading
