Researchers begin trial of drug to slow progression of neurodegenerative condition Multiple System Atrophy – BioSpace
Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2019
21 Oct 2019 Researchers at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology (IoN) and the UCLH National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery (NHNN) are set to test whether a drug can slow progression of the devastating neurodegenerative condition Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). MSA can cause symptoms such as slowness, stiffness and tremor similar to those found in Parkinsons disease. In some patients it mainly affects balance, and patients can develop problems with low blood pressure, speech, and bladder and bowel control. Continue reading

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2019
Too many people living with schizophrenia have difficulty managing their condition, which is why new therapies that target novel receptor pharmacology are desperately needed, said John Renger, Ph.D., chief scientific officer of Cerevel Therapeutics. CVL-231 is a potentially first-in-class antipsychotic designed to selectively modify the activity of the M4 muscarinic receptor to treat schizophrenia while reducing the side effects associated with currently available therapies. The double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 1b study will evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of multiple ascending doses of CVL-231 Continue reading

MIT Lincoln Laboratory researchers are developing an artificial gut to study how the human microbiome the trillions of microorganisms and their genetic material that live within our body, and are as unique to a person as fingerprints influences the onset and progression of diseases linked to changes in gut bacterial constitution, such as Parkinsons disease. The so-called gut-brain axis is a highly complex and interactive network between the gut and the brain, composed of endocrine (hormonal), immunological, and neural mediators Continue reading
