By Briana Vannozzi Correspondent You cant see tremors in Paul Detlefsens hands now, but a decade ago, the outlook for this 43-year-old Parkinsons disease patient looked a lot different. My symptoms were mostly in the right arm, sever tremors, he said. Detlefsen underwent whats called deep brain stimulation surgery. We first showed you the procedure two years ago, on another patient at JFK Neuroscience Institute. Surgically implanted electrodes on the brain send impulses that block signals causing tremors and involuntary movements. The 20-year-old procedure is wildly successful, with just one downfall. Patients were given a bulky remote control generator to manage the system. It was tricky to use alone and required in-office appointments for adjustments. Until now where brain waves meet touch pad. So we convert from the older system to an iPod where they can remotely go up and down on their parameters even at home, said neurosurgeon Dr. Asif Bashir. Detlefsen is the first patient in the U.S. to marry the old system to new, managing his DBSfrom an iPod Touch. Specifically without getting too technical, they can adjust the frequency, amplitude, pulse width, so theres some scientific electronic features that they can adjust to help their symptoms, … Continue reading

Scientists from Sweden say they have made significant progress in the search for a new treatment for Parkinsons disease. Though the research, published in Nature Biotechnology, is still preliminary and the therapy not yet ready to be tested in humans, experts say it could one day help the millions of people living with the neurodegenerative disease. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute tested whether certain brain cells could be manipulated to take on the role of those destroyed by Parkinsons. They first showed in laboratory experiments that it was possible to convert non-neural human brain cells called astrocytes into dopamine neurons, which degenerate and die in the brains of people suffering from Parkinsons disease. These are two specialized cells that do not spontaneously convert into one another, study author Ernest Arenas, a professor at Karolinska Institutes Department of medical biochemistry and biophysics, told CBS News. However, when we used diverse chemicals and genes important for the development of immature brain cells into functional dopamine neurons, we found that it was possible to convert astrocytes … Continue reading

Parkinson’s Disease at 200 – Scientific American Blog Network – Scientific American (blog)

Posted: Published on April 14th, 2017

2017 marks 200 years since James Parkinson, an English apothecary, surgeon, geologist and sometime political activist, published a paper that defined his legacy. An Essay on the Shaking Palsy described a syndrome that caused wide-ranging problems that affected how people move, feel, speak, think and even look. This constellation of symptoms was probably as old as the human race, but Parkinson was the first to scientifically characterize it. Today we know it as his disease. Its estimated that five million people worldwide are currently living with Parkinson's disease, or PD, which we now know kills the neurons that produce dopamine (a critical chemical in brain function) among other changes in the brain. Most people get it around age 60, though it is also seen in people as young as their 20s. The disease is progressive, meaning that it gets inexorably worse over time, and many live with it for decades. Estimated prevalence numbers are likely on the low side because PD is frequently misdiagnosed and can lead to isolation and social withdrawal. Its interesting to imagine what Dr. Parkinson would think about what two centuries of scientific exploration have done to bring us closer to a cure for PD. On … Continue reading
