Migraines linked to Parkinson's disease
Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014
By Trisha Henry, CNN updated 5:06 PM EDT, Wed September 17, 2014 Researchers don't yet understand why migraines might be linked to Parkinson's disease. STORY HIGHLIGHTS (CNN) -- People who suffer from migraines with aura during middle age have double the risk of developing Parkinson's disease or other movement disorders later in life than those who do not, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Neurology. Migraines are the most common brain disorder in both men and women, according to the World Health Organization, and one of the top 10 most debilitating conditions. Aura is the term used to describe the feelings and symptoms that happen shortly before and during a migraine. "Roughly one-third of affected individuals can predict the onset of a migraine because it is preceded by an 'aura,' visual disturbances that appear as flashing lights, zig-zag lines or a temporary loss of vision," according to the National Institutes of Health. Researchers followed more than 5,000 people between the ages of 33 and 65 for 25 years, who were originally enrolled in a clinical trial designed to study heart disease in Iceland. The participants were interviewed about migraine symptoms in middle age and then, about 25 … Continue reading

Letter: Elderly care

Zach Klein followed 19 patients ages 69 to 101 who were given an experimental treatment three times a day for a year at a nursing home in Israel. Seventeen patients achieved a healthy weight, gaining or losing pounds as needed. Muscle spasms, stiffness, tremors and pain reduced significantly. Almost all patients reported an increase in sleeping hours. Patients on the treatment required fewer antipsychotics, Parkinson's treatment, mood stabilizers and pain relievers. Seventy-two percent of participants were able to remove an average of 1.7 prescription medications. This amazing treatment was the wholesome herb cannabis. It was ingested in powder, vapor, oil or smoking. One of the most popular authors in Utah points out, All wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature and use of man. Every herb in the season thereof to be used with prudence and thanksgiving. Utah seniors face some of the harshest criminal penalties in the country if they are caught with this wonder treatment that grows well in a square-foot garden. Utah lawmakers should eliminate harsh criminal penalties for cannabis. Let adults be adults. Let seniors have options for the highest quality of life in their final days. Parkinson's, Cancer Findings Earn Medical Prizes
Posted: Published on September 8th, 2014
Key discoveries about breast cancer, Parkinson's disease and the body's handling of defective proteins have earned prestigious medical awards for five scientists. The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation announced the winners Monday. Each prize includes a $250,000 honorarium. The awards will be presented Sept. 19 in New York. The Lasker award for clinical medical research will be shared by Drs. Mahlon DeLong of Emory University in Atlanta and Alim Louis Benabid of Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France, for developing a surgical treatment for Parkinson's disease. In work that began in the late 1960s, DeLong traced Parkinson symptoms to overactivity in a specific part of the brain. Benabid, following up on that research independently, showed in 1995 that stimulating this area with a surgically implanted electrode could ease some Parkinson symptoms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved that approach for treating advanced Parkinson's disease in 2002. More than 100,000 people worldwide have received the therapy, the Lasker foundation said. The award for special achievement in medical science will go to Mary-Claire King of the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1990, King identified a region of human DNA that contains the BRCA1 gene, which gives a heightened risk of … Continue reading

Now smartphones can diagnose Parkinson's by recording a person's voice and movements
Posted: Published on September 8th, 2014
Experts at Aston University said the 'pocket doctor' makes it possible to use voice recordings to spot the disease with 99 per cent accuracy Telltale signs include soft, breathy speech and a tremor to the voice The idea was unveiled at the British Science Festival in Birmingham Scientists said a person only has to walk for 20 paces with the phone in their pocket to get 'very high accuracy' in diagnosis By Fiona Macrae for the Daily Mail Published: 11:10 EST, 8 September 2014 | Updated: 11:12 EST, 8 September 2014 Smartphones are being turned into pocket doctors capable of spotting Parkinsons disease. The popular devices come equipped with technology needed to record speech and movement both of which are eroded by the condition, Britains biggest science conference heard. The information can then be analysed and, it is hoped, used to diagnose the disease earlier and more accurately. More prompt treatment should improve quality of life. A patients symptoms could also be tracked over time, revolutionising treatment by allowing doctors to adjust drug dosage as needed. A new smartphone app can help diagnose Parkinson's disease - suffered by Muhammad Ali and Michael J Fox (pictured) - by recording speech and … Continue reading

Richland orthodontic practice opens Moses Lake location
Posted: Published on September 5th, 2014
MOSES LAKE - Drs. Chris Parkinson and Dave Butler are bringing their orthodontic expertise to Moses Lake. The pair, who run Parkinson + Butler Orthodontics in Richland, opened up a second office earlier this month. Their Moses Lake office is located on South Clover Drive, near the Moses Lake High School. Parkinson said they wanted to open an office in this area to better serve some of their existing patients. "We're based in Tri-Cities, but a fair number of our patients come to us from the Moses Lake, Othello and Warden areas so we wanted to do a second location so they don't need to travel to the Tri-Cities to see us," he said. Parkinson said they will split their time between the two offices. "We'll go to Moses Lake as often as necessary and as the practice out there builds and there's more of a need then we'll go out there more often," he said. Parkinson + Butler was formed about a year and a half ago, when Butler moved from Texas to Washington to join Parkinson Orthodontics. Butler said he wanted to move back to the Northwest and sent a letter to Parkinson to see if he knew … Continue reading

Parkinson's therapy aims to help retrain brains
Posted: Published on September 3rd, 2014
By JENNY WAGNER Beaver County Times BRIDGEWATER, Pa. (AP) - Parkinson's robs people of the ability to control their movements, but some patients in Beaver County are seeing big results from a physical therapy program designed to counteract the symptoms of the degenerative disease. While there is no cure for Parkinson's disease and little is known about the cause, experts know that people with the nervous system disorder have trouble with slowness of movement, and their movements are also small, said Dale Reckless, facility director of M-R-S Physical Therapy in Bridgewater. But the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Big (LSVT Big) therapy program, which Reckless brought to M-R-S and Beaver County earlier this year, is aimed at keeping people's movements big and quick in order to counteract those symptoms. People with Parkinson's experience an internal queuing problem, so even if they are taking shuffling steps, their brains believe they are walking at a regular pace, Reckless explained. The idea behind LSVT Big, he said, is to overcompensate with big, bold exercises and essentially retrain the brain to get a person's movements back to normal. "We're helping the patients to think big but in the real sense they're actually coming out to … Continue reading
